This is the answer. Ys VIII is my second favorite game other than Persona 5 released the last 5-10 years. Ys doesn't even really require story context. Just jump right in.

*Adol rides a ship, Adol finds a place, Adol EXPLAINS THE SITUATION (usually a shipwreck), Adol find monster, Adol stab monster, Adol keeps EXPLAINING THE SITUATION, then Adol find blue haired girl*

Same setup, different games. All good times. But VIII was the best of those times and had the best blue-haired girl to boot.

Just play and have fun stabbing.

Final Fantasy 12 or 13 are so...strange combat wise, you wonder if they are from the same franchise. As awkward as 8 is from a design and story perspective, once you see the combat, you can immediately transfer "some" of those ideas to any of the first ten games.

12 and 13 are so wildly different, you're better off going, "What these Bravely Traveller things on the handheld games"

It takes itself way more seriously than Chronicles 2 does anyway...

I so wanted this to succeed. However, the game goes to EVA school of naming everything after the Bible (DYA GET IT, IT"S DEEP AND EMOTIONAL...it really isn't). Margulis and Albedo are amazing villains though. It really makes you want to beat the shit out of them (especially what Albedo does). The main issue is something they couldn't control. The main character is obviously Shion, but her plotline...doesn't really go anywhere. Once Jr gets involved, it becomes his game, and the second half becomes his way too fucking much. Shion gets left to twist in the wind and remind you, "Wasn't I introduced first, what the fuck?" Maybe if Jr. didn't have the, "I look like a little kid" thing, I'd probably hate it less.

So many good things make up for a lot of shortcomings.

• Shion trying to be a bastion of peace while Virgil goes, "Fuck you, weapons are weapons, try to survive you stupid bitch!"
• Margulis and Cherenkov story (though the dungeon Cherenkov gets is very...VERY fucking boring. God, I wish dungeons in this game weren't so fucking long.
• Albedo...um...just look up "the Albedo scene." You'll know it when you see it. Jesus fucking christ.

Again, the first game had so much promise. It's a shame 2 and 3 suffered for many different reasons. I still prefer Xenosaga to stuff like Xenoblade (turn based is always going to be my combat preference). I really hold that trilogy in high regard, despite its fault. The first game is just...so fucking good. But those good points are bogged down either by business decisions, story problems, or trying way too fucking hard to be "insightful."

Seriously, it's a game about people in space fighting aliens and other space people. All the biblical subtext gets in the goddamn way.

I work as a greeter, it is a thankless, boring job, even before the threat of doom. The only benefit is time to think and stare off in the distance.

Also, fuck that thief stat line. It's FFIX all over again (COULDN'T STEAL ANYTHING).

And everything else? Fuck this franchise. Good voice acting be damned, this is written so fucking badly. Hearts and Darkness and alter egos and Namine Kairis and keyblades and Organizations of Sea salt ice cream FUCK THIS HURTS MY BRAIN MAKE IT STOP

They only do it cause Tales pulls that shit every so often. Star Ocean is nothing if riding Tales's cock (for better and worse). Tales did that sort of thing in Destiny and Arise (and probably more games that I can't think of).

Overall, 3/10. The main medieval world and the planet hopping are fun (Nel and the early 00s invention minigame save this fucking game something fierce), but jesus christ on a cracker, that plot twist is the dumbest thing I've seen save for Eternal Sonata's 10 minute scene with flashbacks OF THE SAME SCENE Claves Death Scene to be specific and Tales of Arise deciding to wreck itself with overblown, overwrought derp in the last 2-3 hours.

I loved SO3 when I first played it, but that plot twist is just awful. It was bad then, it pisses me off the more I think about it. Star Ocean isn't even an amazing franchise by most standards. But I cannot fathom something so low rent and dumb.

Before the Plot Twist - 6/10

Fairly basic "dork gets stranded on planet X, but his party is awesome sauce to balance out the cliche, then he goes galavanting against the big bads in the rest of the planet hopping." Not terrible, but good enough for what it needs to do.

After the plot twist - 1/10

But then...you HAD TO FUCKING RUIN IT! It's like Tales of Arise, but with the added benefit of "Hey, let's chuck two other games into a bin of no return because we saw .hack once."

I cannot fucking believe they had the gall to not only pull off the Plot Twist of Doom, but without Danganronpa's self awareness it was a satire on arrival. The big bads are just computer programmers, and the characters are data he created for people to watcho on TV or a video game. What the blue fuck? The 4D world is just some podunk town, and non threatening at all. People give DRV3 shit for screwing over its lore, but even as a single game (haden't played the series up to this point, you chcked all stakes away, made all your characters and their actions meaningless, and made the final boss some schlub computer programmer nutball. It's like saying your final boss is Mark Zuckerberg or something. On it's own, it's fucking sad. Knowing this is a franchise doing this, with a 2nd game that was was welll liked....ew..
