Every endgame linkshell used bots to get world spawn claims and pretended that others didn't. But what got them was item duping in instanced events, getting triple drops of rare items instead of a single. At least some of them owned up to it, but a lot of players were really salty that their "elite" characters were the result of cheating. (look up Salvage bans) And it did actually affect other players. Botting for claims obviously gave them an advantage over honest players. But the item duping as well. So when S-E saw the number of items vs how many times an event was done, drop rates were adjusted to be in line with what they wanted. Recently watched somebody play Link to the Past and for the first part of the game they kept getting their ass handed to them so were relying on save states and the rewind feature to brute force their way through the dungeons. Once they stopped doing it so much, they got better overall and actually started learning some of the games mechanics. I've found the same thing happens to me if I abuse the soul dupe glitch in Dark Souls.
