I've never seen The Princess Bride, so B8 mafia is the first time I'd ever heard of that WIFOM stuff.

The first time I even saw it used in a movie was seeing Pirates 4 on launch.

That's surely a banworthy offense!

People think I'm kidding when I say I'm not really into movies or TV. I couldn't give you 5 plot lines from shows that mostly everyone has seen, like The Simpsons. TV just isn't my thing.

Granted I'm a bit of a movie buff so I'm a bit biased here, but to me there are some movies that are such culture touchstones it's almost - *ahem* - inconceivable not to have seen them at some point, especially when their dialogue becomes incorporated into everyday speech.

In a strange place? Guess you're not in Kansas anymore.
Trying to close a deal? Make him an offer he can't refuse.
Not enough room in your trunk? I think you're going to need a bigger boat.
Wife annoying you? Tell her that frankly, my dear, you don't give a damn (OK, maybe that's not such a good idea) <_<

I'm not trying to say Princess Bride is as classic as those four, but at this point it's as much a part of our culture, perhaps even moreso. And movies like these - aside from being terrific in and of themselves - are must watches to me simply because if you haven't you're missing out on a part of our common culture to which nearly everyone can relate.

Also, if you've never read The Princess Bride by William Goldman, it is also fabulous, albeit in a very different way (you have to read it to see what I mean). He adapted his own book for the screen and changed a good deal of stuff around through necessity. Still hilarious though.

Also worth reading/watching by Goldman: "Marathon Man" - awesome film with Dustin Hoffman, Roy Schneider and a very, very evil Lawrence Olivier. Goldman also wrote that screenplay adapted from his book, which has an excellent sequel too: "Brothers."

reading The Princess Bride was one of the greater reading experiences I ever had. I'd seen the movie enough times to recite it from start to finish but then reading the book just blew my mind. William Goldman is an amazing writer.

Ooooooooh, right, that line initially gave GWTW an X rating.

uh, no

there were no ratings in 1939. for a time, "damn" was banned by the MPA, but that was amended a few months before Gone WIth The Wind came out. it's also not the only utterance of the word "damn" in the movie, I believe.

Guardian Heroes seems to be finalized at 14, though I could already start working on a second version of the game that would probably be going a bit over 20.

I could definitely make two different games out of the theme.

More people need to play it, its a gem.

After discussing this at great length with Chris, I'm curious at hearing what others have to say. I'm sure he'll go "I can't believe you're taking this here" but it doesn't hurt, and I don't mean this as an "I told you so", this is a discussion I think has value.

Is it ever possible to make a "right" decision in mafia and still lose?

In comparison: in poker, you can make the "right" decision and still lose. If you have (Ks-Qs) with a table of (As-10d-9h-4s-5s) and have raised and been called each round until now (pot commited), you wouldn't fold to a small all in by the other person. They could have (3s-2s), but that would require terribly bad play on their part.

Obviously, mafia =/= poker, but I include that to demonstrate how in some respects the "right " call can lead to a negative result. And obviously, nothing exists in a vacuum, especially in mafia.

But can you ever lose despite making the "right" call?

Sort of reminds me of the FMA endgame. All the evidence was pointing towards Ed lying, but no-one accounted for a Scum Doppelganger. I'm guessing that's not quite what you mean though. Unless you're inferring 'sound judgment' as the right call.

Sometimes with cruel roles/set-ups you can make the 'right call' and lose, I guess.

As an example, if you made a decision based on the assumption that no host would include untargetable-unlynchable-triple-killing-detective-corrupt-mayor-roleblocker, and it turned out that that role was put in there.

Or if a person has information, and you make your decision based on it, and it turns out that they received the information by talking to somebody outside of the game when their role did not allow for it.

I don't care about the specific situation that was in question, I want to know in general terms whether mafia should be considered completely results based, as unlike poker, there is no (or minimal) chance involved, and instead a lot of human emotion, and as such a "perfect" player would be able to get perfect reads and convince the town perfectly, and thus any time a player doesn't win it is due to the inherent imperfection of players.

Personally I think that if you misread the balance of the game based on what you think balance should be.... it's not "the right move".

I definitely think you can play well and make good decisions and still lose though. It is a team game after all.

I've lost a few games due to "lolbalance" on AIM by making what should've been the right decision.

The one that generally comes to mind was a game of 8 where mafia had Godfather/Roleblocker and the only power role town had in the entire game was a cop.

Final 3 with a confirmed RB through the Cop who got blocked night 2, and the Cop (who was killed night 3 after mass) and Godfather dead. The remaining scum claimed doctor at mass and claimed roleblocked night 3.

So it was either Godfather/Roleblocker/Cop/Towniex5 or Godfather/Roleblocker/Cop/Doctor/Towniex4.

Yeah I wasn't lynching Doctor in that scenario. Godfather/Roleblocker/Cop/Towniex5 is such a "lol" setup.

I think Blades right. Especially when it comes to obvious host errors vs player error, you cant ever assume that the host messed up. I still remember vividly when someone claimed in Disney Mafia that I told them more about there scan then the initial scan, and people got all fired up about something I never did.Same goes with balance. DNE is DNE because the host should have never ever put in that SK role. You cant ever assume that a role that broken should ever be put in a game like that, so if you were to get paranoid that such roles existed it would be the wrong play.

There are exceptions of course, sometimes broken roles can be balanced by opposite broken roles, and you could be playing Chaos mafia, but in normal games you have to assume the host is sane when making decisions.

Towns make the "right play" by lynching scummy-as-f*** players who flip town in basically every single game.

I disagree:
If, as you imply, these players are flipping town close to 3 out of 4 times(or more), town would make a better play by simply rolling a n-sided die.
