And this conversation isn't about that specific topic.

It's about the generality of whether mafia is a purely results-based game.

Well it's a team game, you can obviously play a perfect game and still lose. It's like playing a Dota game. You can play the best a player can absolutely play, but still lose if your team is just that dumb and your opposition played well too.



The problem with this is that everybody tends to think they were the only ones who played perfectly and the loss is in no way their fault when it's rarely actually the case >_>

Haha yeah. It was slightly badly worded. Obviously not taking a break purely to play mafia!

I've been in the same job a for a long time and the last time I had a holiday was like 4 years ago. Well, actually I took a week off for my wedding but that wasn't exactly a relaxing, stress-free holiday.

At the risk of inflating Ulti's already massive ego, Ulti's just the kind of person I'd almost always want to lynch.

Not because I'd want to lose him if he was town (I wouldn't, he's probably a great townie) but rather because I'd be quite scared of what he'd be capable of if scum.

...Actually, scratch that: I think that'd be Sir Chris.

Surely you have to give your power roles a chance to figure those kind of players out first though?

I wouldn't want to lynch one of the better players purely because of the damage they could cause as scum when they could just as easily be one of town's key players. Not unless I was actually adamant they were scum.

Well when you give mafia multiple assassin shots and make it so the SK can't kill while night kill immune, I call fair.

The one issue with the Stargate role was being 100% night kill immune. I'm cool with giving the SK/third faction a fairly equal chance of winning, but that was dumb. Everything else was fine with it.

Eh, so long as he scans guilty, I'm not sure if being 100% night kill immune is necessarily terrible for an SK. After all, an SK needs to have some chance, no matter how improbable, of winning.

I've played in one Mafia game where the SK actually deliberately aimed for a Modkill because he hated being an SK that much, simply because the SK had absolutely no chance of winning. We didn't like that player, and him killing himself was ****ing stupid, but it was symbolic of how hopeless being an SK was.

In retrospect I suppose I wouldn't either, if only because I'd be confident that scum would just kill Ulti and Sir Chris early if they weren't scum anyway. (And if they really were bulletproof, the lack of kills would tip us off.)

I'd probably put a vote on Chris early in D1 just for grins and giggles, though. Old time's sake.

Getting me lynched is very difficult when I am scum, when I am town even Ulti as confirmed mayor threatening to mayor any lynch other than mine didn't get the job done.

The scum team that manages to pull off that sham would feast heartily on that night.

Flavor fit survivor so well though. Ba'al is such a good flavor for survivor. Even claimed the multiple lives thing if I recall right.

Also hiding kills is nice and stuff but it is hard to get by with no extra kills.

Also I totally disagree with 'anyone could pull it off', and its insulting to my play that game. I had to keep killing mafia and town in the right order for like 7 straight days. I was scum hunting like a boss.

Yeah but then you're into WIFOM. Do Scum straightaway go for the kill on players like Chris when that's the obvious choice so Town could watch/bodyguard/doc save/etc? Same applies in reverse to town power roles.

People try to get me lynched a lot. Key word: Try.

I think the last time I was lynched early was in DCU day 2 as scum when town literally piled on me when I was at work because I had deftly avoided a lynch train until I literally couldn't respond. Got on to a lot of votes and my buddies bussing me like idiots.

We won that game though through...mass modkills, I'll take it tbh.

One of my favorite Mafia stories: It was relatively early in my Mafia career, so I made silly mistakes, but this one ended up paying off. I was dayvig (Sawyer in Lost mafia; dunno why Sawyer was dayvig.) I had one shot that I had to take during the day, and that's all I could do.

Took a wacky gambit and laid low and never took my shot. My strategy was to act scummy enough that scum would keep me alive so I was always a viable lynch target, but basically escape actually being lynched through superior argumentative ability when I was pressed. This strategy was 'aided' by the fact that our Cop was an N1 kill. Several days in I was finally pressed enough to be forced to claim, and I deliberately claimed I was Townie 'nilla (chose a redshirt character to claim) in hopes that if I got too close to lynching I could announce a sudden daykill and we'd have even more information of who was likely scum (who was on the lynch-MWIS train.)

Instead scum actually left me alone. Scum actually left me alive under the premise I was 'unconfirmed' and therefore a viable lynch candidate; better to keep me around because I was antagonistic enough to draw town's fire.

When it was me, two other unconfirmeds (both of whom were scum) and several confirmeds left, I finally had a lynch train on me that'd do me in, so to everyone's absolute shock, I typed "Dayvig (Name)" in the standard format there.
Keep in mind that at this forum incorrectly typing the Dayvig message if you were not in fact a Dayvig meant a Modkill, so the actual assumption was that I had just Modkilled myself (in some sort of rebellion for clearly about to having been lynched.)

Instead I killed the scum and basically won the game for town.

Hysterically, this was something like my third or fourth game there, and since I was a newbie at least one or two established Mafia players still got on my back for being foolish enough to have not taken my shot earlier. Like, I had literally won Town the game with my play, and yet I was still to blame for taking the risk that I'd be nightkilled before taking my shot.

But you see if they had been outwardly happy that would have meant your glory could have possibly surpassed their own.

From what I've seen it tends to be that people get shouted at for being bad but not so much praised for being good. Well sometimes they are but it's rare.

It completely depends on how you play the role. I mean, the one game I was SK I played it pretty townlike and shot depending on who I thought was winning between the other factions to try and get it to 1 scum and yourself in 5 and have a town lynch that day ideally, and I got it to a day at 4. (Of course, that night I went all paranoid and changed my action and lost as a result instead of 3-way tie, but that's not the point!) The point is you can play as SK and not have to hide your shots.

Also Boko, you must have been reallllly drunk to write that one. Glad it worked out though!

Um excuse me? Your buddies didn't buss you, nor were we idiots. You were the idiot that claimed bus driver after a ridiculous amount of power had already claimed. If you had just been able to suck up your ego and not claim power for once in your life and just claimed nilla, you would have been fine. Your fake claim was horrible, that's why you were lynched. Don't blame town or your scum buddies for that one, that was all your fault. You can't even admit when you had a bad claim, christ. And it didn't happen while you were gone, it happened immediately after your claim, which means you were around.
