Gaining Groudon
"This is better than my favorite soap opera!"
Score: 6.5/10

The heroes are floating on some pieces of wood in the middle of the ocean, hoping a ship will come by. By sheer luck, a Team Magma submarine surfaces right beneath them and takes them to a Team Magma ship. Team Magma's leader, Maxie, tells one of his goons, Tabetha (who is a man, I don't know) to lock them in the submarine.

Maxie then takes the heroes to his office to talk to them even though he just ordered them locked away. He tells them
1. That Team Magma's goal is to use Groudon to create more land and Team Aqua's goal is to use Kyogre to create more ocean
2. That Team Magma has Kyogre and Team Aqua has Groudon
3. That Team Magma has the blue orb that controls Groudon and Team Aqua has the red orb that controls Kyogre (by the way, don't expect an explanation as to who created these orbs that can control superpowerful ancient pokemon)
4. That the Teams are going to Monsoon Island to exchange the pokemon.

I understand that it's a standard thing for cartoon villains to announce their plans to the heroes, but this entire sequence makes no sense at all. He has literally no motivation to tell them any of this, he doesn't even know they want to foil his plans, and the first thing he did upon showing up was tell one of his goons to lock the heroes away because they didn't have time for them.
external image

Meanwhile, a Team Aqua officer, Shelly, sneaks onto the ship and frees Kyogre, which launches itself into the ocean and causes the ship to start sinking. In the confusion, Pikachu grabs the blue orb, which disappears into its stomach and causes, well, it's easier to upload a picture to Photobucket than to explain.
external image
The tattoos keep glowing and disappearing, and Pikachu freaks out and falls unconscious.

Cut to Shelly and Archie, the leader of Team Aqua. Archie, who by the way has a terrible voice actor, uses the red orb over the ocean to command Kyogre to attack Team Magma's ship even though it was already sinking, so I guess he's just kind of a dick.

Cut to the heroes. Everyone except Ash jumps overboard, but Ash is attacked by Tabetha. Rather than defend himself with Grovyle or something, Ash just lets Tabetha's Mightyena kick his ass and lets himself and Pikachu be taken prisoner in a helicopter heading to Monsoon Island. Why go to Monsoon Island to exchange the pokemon when you've already lost your bargaining chip? Because shut up.

We then learn that Lance is here, disguised as a Team Magma grunt, and his mission is to stop both organizations. May, Max, and Brock are rescued from drowning by Lance's Gyarados, which Brock recognizes as Lance's.

Cut to Maxie and Archie meeting each other on Monsoon Island while Team Rocket watches. Archie thinks Maxie should disband Team Magma because he's already lost, and Maxie thinks Archie is a stupidhead.

In the helicopter, Pikachu gets the glowing tattoos again and freaks out, attacking everything around it until it faints. Lance then rescues Ash and explains that Pikachu bonded with the blue orb, which has overcome its mind with its power, and that the orbs are incredibly dangerous to handle, even though there is absolutely no way he could possibly know any of this.

Cut to Team Rocket breaking into the submarine Team Aqua is keeping Kyogre in. Bizarrely, Cacnea defeats two Crawdaunt by itself, showing that if Team Rocket doesn't have to fight named characters, they're actually decent combatants. Team Rocket's plan? Capture Kyogre with a net. Yes. Capture the ridiculously huge and powerful pokemon with a really big net. Unsurprisingly, they get their ass kicked and blast off, but the distraction allows it to escape into the ocean again.

The episode ends with a cliffhanger. I have to say, this is a solid episode. Sure, there's a ton that makes no sense, but hey, it sets everything up really well, and that's as much as you can hope for in the first part of a two-part episode.

The Scuffle of Legends
"It just didn't seem right to take it from behind."
Score:4/10

You heard it, folks. James has no problem with crossdressing, but actual sodomy is where he draws the line.

Archie is told that Kyogre escaped into the sea, and he announces that he planned for this. I was going to complain about this, since there is no way he could have planned for this, but I'll accept it, because later events show he's completely insane. He goes onto a hovercraft and floats above the island, commanding Kyogre to destroy the island for the sheer hell of it. Maxie points out that his own people are on the island, but he ignores it on the grounds of the Idiotic Villain Clause.

Lance explains to Maxie that the orbs were created by an ancient civilization of evil people who went around doing stupid things like creating magic orbs that can destroy the world, and further explains that as the orb commands the pokemon to do evil things, it also turns the user more evil, which makes the pokemon even more evil, etc. Why is it there were no sane ancient civilizations? No ancient civilizations that didn't create time travel devices or world-shattering orbs of pure evil, just crazy civilizations of dumbasses? Anyway, this speech turns Maxie into a hero, but don't worry, he'll proceed to do absolutely nothing for the rest of the episode.

As Kyogre summons a thunderstorm at Archie's command, Ash escapes the helicopter, and the heroes and Pikachu find the Team Aqua submarine. Pikachu frees Groudon as Lance attacks Kyogre (not the comparatively undefended Archie, but literally attacks Kyogre), which causes the red orb to enter Archie's body like the blue orb did Pikachu's. Groudon then dispels the storm Kyogre created, and you have to admit, even though that makes sense (it has the ability drought), the storm was way more dramatic than a slightly cloudy day.

Lance figures it all out: Groudon wants to help the humans, so it communicated with Pikachu via the blue orb to free it, and that's why Pikachu kept freaking out earlier. He comes up with a plan: Gyarados, Brock, May, and Max distract Archie while Groudon attacks Kyogre with a cheap shot. Lance and Ash will do nothing (seriously).

The two pokemon start fighting, so Beautifly and Mudkip attack Archie, distracting Kyogre for long enough for Groudon to attack. The orbs exit Archie and Pikachu, and Kyogre and Groudon, no longer controlled, part peacefully, and Archie claims to have amnesia of the past few events. The orbs then fly into the sky and shatter, Lance claiming that the legendary pokemon destroyed them, even though neither of them possess the ability to make orbs hover into the air and explode.

We had two seasons of build-up of Team Aqua and Team Magma, two seasons, and it's all wrapped up in a two part episode. Pretty weak.

Pretty weak.

It's Still Rocket Roll to Me
"Since I was a kid, I always wanted to go into space and catch pokemon."
Score: 3/10

Everyone had those dreams as a kid. Sadly, most of us will only accomplish the latter. Though I actually caught all 151 legitimately, I even went to a Nintendo event for Mew and everything.

The heroes reach the Mossdeep City gym, but are told everyone has gone to see the space shuttle launch at the space center. When they reach it, they see Tate and Liza battling in a zero gravity room, and just like real zero gravity, you can jump up and float in mid air without your velocity causing you to reach the ceiling. The group then plays around using the extremely expensive astronaut training equipment that they have access to because Commander Jim is their father. Yes, "Commander Jim."
external image
Liza's dream is to be a gym leader in a space station around another planet. Well, set your goals high, kid. You can at least accomplish part of that.

Team Rocket attempts to hijack the shuttle to give as a gift to Giovanni (just roll with it), breaking in and tying up Tate and Max, who were playing in the cockpit. Just like real shuttles, you can launch them by pressing a single button in the cockpit that doesn't require a decade of training to understand, and you don't need any help from people in a control room on the ground, so they easily launch as everyone watches in horror. Fortunately, Max and Tate escape and Tate's Solrock defeats Team Rocket, so Tate's father tells him to guide the shuttle to the ground and land it safely. Tate's qualifications? He's used the training simulation a few times.

Well, that's overqualification if I ever heard it. He lands it easily, and a few hours later, his father launches the shuttle as planned. You know, I don't actually know this for certain, but you know what, I'm going to assume it takes days of work just to prop the shuttle up to begin with. I have put absolutely no research into this at all, but I will bet you it takes days and hundreds of thousands of dollars just to do that one thing.

Solid as a Solrock
"Prepare for lunar trouble up at moon from outer space! And sunshine makes it double 'cause we're here to wreck the place! A moon of smelly cheese to cause the world's devastation! A sunny and awful day for all the peoples within our nation! To denounce by the light of the silvery moon the evils of truth and love! To extend our reach to the vast of flaming gas from up above! Jessie the Moon Maiden! James the Sun Dude!"
Score: 3/10

We begin in the gym, which consists not only of an arena like regular gyms, but giant prop planets hanging from the ceiling. Okay, guys, seriously, I know your father is an astronaut and I know you use space pokemon, I got it. You don't need to drive your theme home like this, the audience already understands. By the way, these giant prop planets are made out to be a huge deal, like they really affect the battle because you can use them during a fight, but they never actually come up.

Ash is told he'll be battling Solrock and Lunatone in a double battle, so he sends out Corphish and Grovyle, since both are strong against rock. No, I'm just screwing with you, he sends out Pikachu and Swellow. His strategy? Use quick attack and peck. He survives the first minute literally - literally - because Lunatone and Solrock get in each other's way and cause Tate and Liza to start bickering. Ash gets the upper hand because Tate and Liza keep arguing about nothing (I would complain, but I know from experience that real siblings do this all the time, I have literally argued with my sister about whether we were arguing about whether we arguing or not), but Team Rocket attacks with a song instead of a regular motto, and man, James' voice actor is way better at singing than Jessie's voice actress. He's distractingly better than her, I swear you have to hear it to understand.
external image
They capture Solrock and Lunatone using cages made of unobtanium, which is literally the stuff they were mining for in Avatar. Team Rocket escapes in their balloon, and since Swellow is already out, Ash easily pops it using no it takes him like two minutes to remember that Swellow can fly. He frees the pokemon and usepsychicattackblastingoffaaaagaaain. They decide to complete their battle even though you would assume the battle being interrupted in such a way would void any results. And it's not a new battle, it's explicitly a continuation of the existing battle.

With the experience of Team Rocket behind them, Tate and Liza are far more in sync than they were before, making Ash realize that when his enemies work together, independent attacks like thunderbolt are useless. Thus, he has Pikachu hop on Swellow's back, but his strategy of "flying thunderbolt" fails as well. He tries double team-- wait, since when has Swellow known double team? That's always been the writers' tool to lazily make battles against people Ash should demolish difficult. I'm serious, like every third non-main character whom Ash fights has a pokemon with double team because it's the laziest way to create tension ever. Also, double team fails as well.

Eventually, Ash has Pikachu use thunder on itself and Swellow, which stores electricity in their bodies and uses... thunder armor?
external image
For some reason this makes them completely immune to everything Tate and Liza can do, and they win with ease. Tate and Liza give him the Mind Badge, which is shaped like a heart for some reason. Maybe Tate and Liza are actually Egyptian.

Last review for a while, guys. I'm going on a vacation and won't be able to review any more episodes until Sunday or Monday at the earliest.

Vanity Affair
"Who needs a peaceful lifestyle when you can be stressed out and rich?!"
Score: 6/10

If the American Dream had a motto, that would be it.

We begin as Ash uses Torkoal to fight a random guy's Scizor, which now pronounces it "Sciz-zor" even though all previous Scizor pronounced it as "Scee-zor." Perhaps unsurprisingly, Ash wins easily. As the battle goes on, Drake of the Elite Four watches.

After the battle, Drake goes into a restaurant that Team Rocket is working in and orders a glass of milk with peppermint, because nothing says "hardened, grizzled sailor" like milk with peppermint. His milk is served to him in a tea cup, I honestly don't know. When the heroes wander into the restaurant as well, Max recognizes Drake as a member of the Elite Four. Really. Max recognizes Drake, a member of the Elite Four, but he doesn't recognize Steven, who is either the champion. This is like recognizing Bill Wennington but not Michael Jordon. By the way, I have no idea who Bill Wennington is, I just pulled his name off of Wikipedia's article on the 1998 Chicago Bulls.

Drake compliments Ash, and invites the heroes to "take a ride on my boat." Yes, go with the old mustachioed man who doesn't wear a shirt. That will get you places in life. Drake also invites Team Rocket (disguised) because of how good their milk was.

When they reach his wooden sailing ship, Drake challenges Ash to a battle. I actually considered complaining about this, but then I remembered Ash is in the Top Sixteen of two different regions and is the Orange Islands Champion, so what the hell, why not. Brock warns Ash not to be cocky, but come on, Brock, Ash did great the last time he fought an Elite Four member, didn't he?

Drake sends out a Shellgon, so Ash counters a dragon type with Pikachu, an electric type. Ash decides Shellgon are slow, so using speed attacks is the best option, so he immediately orders a thunderbolt. Drake dicks around with Ash for a while, not giving any orders to Shellgon, before suddenly busting out powerful moves and destroying him in seconds. Drake's first mate tells the heroes the plan: Drake lets speedy opponents deal some damage to the tough and defensive Shellgon, and waits for them to get too close to dodge and then obliterates them. He came up with this plan from his experiences on the ocean, because obviously, experiences on the ocean lead directly to "wait for your opponent to exhibit overconfidence."

Drake sends out Altaria, so Ash counters with Grovyle, which is literally the worst possible choice he could have made. His plan is to use the masts as trees and jump around, but Grovyle still gets utterly demolished by, of all things, Altaria's solar beam. Drake tells Ash that he needs to focus more, but before anything more can happen, Team Rocket steals Pikachu. Drake gets offended by the idea of pokemon thieves, so he just plain busts out his Salamence and destroys them in about two seconds.
external image
Look at Chimecho there, you just know it knows a particularly painful blast off is in its immediate future. Brock calls Salamence the most sheerly powerful pokemon he's ever seen, even though he saw a Kyogre battle a Groudon three episodes ago.

At night, the heroes have dinner with Drake, and Drake tells Ash that he used to be too overconfident to win consistently. He tells Ash that he has incredible potential, perhaps enough to even one day beat Trip's Snivy.

There's a couple of reasons why Kanto has the fastest pace. The anime was originally only suppose to last until Kanto and even when it was known that they were going to extend it due to the new games the pace didn't slow down as badly because there was only about a 2 year gap between the first episode and when Gold/Silver was released compare to the 4 year gaps between games. It also helps that they transfered about 35 episodes to the Orange Islands instead of making them filler.

Roughly 200 episodes is a lot considering most important battles last for only 1 episode at best. With the pace BW has gone I'm expecting either something that DP did between the 7th and 8th badge or the battle frontier like RSE had. I'm expecting the latter since half of Unova would be left unexplored otherwise.

Why include him if he's no longer the champion, though?

The anime uses the third game as cannon when it is released. So he ends up disappearing. He's probably still up in a cave waiting for Ash.

Very interesting information. I also wonder how BW will handle its relatively fast pace. Battle Subway for an entire year?

That would still make him the former champion, there's no way Max wouldn't know a champion on sight.

Tate and Liza give him the Mind Badge, which is shaped like a heart for some reason. Maybe Tate and Liza are actually Egyptian.

Aside from the part where he locked them away first, isn't this the most accurate anime portrayal of the games' evil team members ever?
All he needed to add was that Ash and his friends are children and therefore have no chance to stop him.

Basically none of Maxie's actions made any sense if you look at them critically.

True, but it's still pretty weird that Maxie initially seems competent before doing stuff that even Team Rocket wouldn't.
