Tyson mentions that his Meowth could evolve, but it chooses not to. Good for it: the only cat with a better evolution than its first form is Glameow, and of course, May's Skitty will never evolve (I checked).

Saved by the Beldum
"Will Ash have what it takes to go all the way?!"
Score: 5/10

I doubt it.

While training for the competition, Ash bumps into Morrison, the sandwich guy.
external image
I refuse to believe they put any effort into that. I mean, hell, that sandwich is as large as Morrison's entire torso and head, it would kill him to eat that thing, and if you must edit out riceballs, couldn't you at least change them to doughnuts or something actually round?

Upon seeing Ash's pokemon, Morrison introduces his: Gligar, Growlithe, Steelix, Girafarig, Beldum, and Swampert. Team Rocket shows up and does their thing, but then Tyson shows up. Tyson's Meowth insults Meowth ("Meowth" translates to "You eat hairballs," apparently) and blasts them off, but acts really moodily.

The next day, Morrison is going through the preliminaries, and uses Beldum against an Electabuzz. Beldum gets its non-existent ass completely kicked, to such a degree that it evolves into a Metang and defeats its enemy.

Later, everyone goes to watch Tyson, and surprise surprise, his Meowth is fighting a Persian, what are the odds. We learn here that Tyson's Meowth hates Persians a lot. The battle is close, but Meowth defeats it with thunderbolt. After being declared the winner, Tyson's Meowth tries to kill the Persian until Tyson forcibly recalls him.

Later, Tyson explains to the heroes while TR Meowth listens in. Tyson met his Meowth by accident in a forest: it challenged a Persian for leadership of their pack and lost and was outcast, so Tyson took it in. Tyson thinks that until his Meowth proves itself better than any Persian, it will never be satisfied, and TR Meowth emphasizes with it, as he also hates Persians.

Ash defeats a random dude's Hitmonlee for his preliminary, in a scene that completely ruins the tension created by Tyson's story about his Meowth. Jesus Christ, arrange this so that Tyson's story is the last thing in the episode, it's thematically more powerful that way.

Ignore how that's obviously pasted over a riceball. Just ignore how they put no effort into making it match the animation. May literally says "This cheeseburger's the best." Those are her exact words. They chose to paste in a muffin and then call it a cheeseburger.

Score: 6/10

Oh come on, there are so many puns you can make with "ash," and that's what you go with?

We start with Ash versus Dude. I wonder who's going to win. Ash sends out Glalie and Grovyle, and Dude counters with Charizard and Quilava. What really confuses me here, what really confuses me here, is that Max then says "Ash chose the perfect pokemon." I know this is going to surprise you, but get ready for this: Ash beats Dude. Cut to Tyson, who defeats another dude. I'm underselling these fights, they actually are pretty well done, but it's not like there was any doubt of their success against these people who have never shown up before.

Later that day, May talks about how she wants to try a local burrito made out of peanut butter and cactus, or as I like to call it, "something no one would ever eat." There are no matches the next day, so the heroes decide to train while someone plays a montage song off screen.

Ash sends out Pikachu. Katie withdraws Golduck and sends out Dugtrio, so Ash withdraws Pikachu and sends out Swelnoofcoursehedoesn't, he keeps Pikachu out against something that can obliterate it, and Dugtrio wins easily. Fortunately, Ash's Glalie defeats Dugtrio easily.

Katie sends out Misdreavus, and starts off with destiny bond, allowing Glalie to defeat it to take it down. With headbutt. Against its ghost type. TO BE CONTINUED

A Judgment Brawl
"Zig when Walrein zags!"
Score: 7/10

The battlefield changes to a pool with floating platforms. It's now Corphish versus Golduck. Golduck confuses Corphish, but Corphish's confused attacks luckily all work out anyway and defeat Golduck. Katie sends out Venomoth again, and for once, Ash does the smart thing and recalls Corphish and sends out Swellow, who defeats Venomoth with insulting ease.

Katie sends out Scizor, and after an admittedly really cool battle of countering double team with double team with double team, Swellow wins. I normally hate double team because the writers fall back on every time they need to create false tension, but this time it's actually pretty cool.

Katie's final pokemon is a Walrein, but it's too blubbery to be affected by Swellow's attacks and defeats it easily. Ash sends out Cophish, which gets out knocked out in one attack because it was already weakened from the earlier fight.

Finally, Ash sends out Grovyle, and tricks Walrein into using ice beam to freeze the pool and prevent it from diving underwater. He then waits for Walrein to use body slam and tells Grovyle to duck and use bullet seed, and by "duck," he apparently means "jump into the air."
Later, Morrison and Tyson defeat their unnamed opponents. Sadly, I already used the only joke I have for this like twelve times. We then learn that the second round will involve Ash versus Morrison, who moodily walks off, apparently not wanting to fight Ash yet. He tries to train, but he now likes Ash too much to fight him properly, and Brock explains that Morrison doesn't know how to handle fighting a friend.

The next morning, Ash and Morrison square off on an ice field. Ash starts with Corphish, and Morrison sends out Girafarig. Morrison is clearly not on top of things and loses easily, and when the judge tells him to send out another pokemon, he's paralyzed with indecision.

Choose It or Lose It!
"ONLY ONE OF THESE TRAINERS CAN EMERGE VICTORIOUS AND REACH THE FINAL FOOOOOUUUURRR"
Score: 7/10

Morrison eventually sends out Growlithe to fight Corphish. This is a bad move, and Growlithe goes down without managing a single move other than agility. Ash realizes that Morrison can't fight him right now, so he starts insulting Morrison until he's willing to fight properly. He sends out Swampert, and the pokemon knock each other out.

Ash sends out Pikachu and Morrison sends out Steelix. This is like the definition of when to change your pokemon, so Ash keeps Pikachu in and lets it get defeated. Ash sends out Torkoal, and overheat and flamethrower... fail. Steelix wins, and Ash sends out Grovyle, which defeats it easily. I wonder how many times I've use a variation of the word "easy" in the past few episodes.

Morrison sends out Gligar, which, surprisingly, defeats Grovyle. Ash sends out Swellow, and it turns into a knock-down, drag-out fight that ends with both being knocked out.

It's now Glalie versus Metang, and "Ash should have the advantage" of an ice versus a steel, yes, Max, you are completely right and not at all an idiot.
external image
Fortunately, Glalie's ice and normal attacks defeat Metang's steel type and high defenses, just like it would in the games.

The heroes learn that tomorrow, Ash will be up against Tyson, and this will definitely be nothing like Ash versus Harrison. How do I know that? Well Harrison was from Hoenn, whereas Tyson is from oh wait.

Tyson gives a pep talk to his pokemon: Meowth, Sceptile, Metagross, Donphan, Hariyama, and Shiftry. TR Meowth tries to give Tyson's Meowth some advice for fighting Pikachu, but it blows him off. Meanwhile, Morrison tells Ash that he's definitely going to defeat Tyson.

The first round is Glalie versus Sceptile, and it's a TO BE CONTINUED as ice beam connects with solar beam.

Despite my jokes, this episode is actually pretty decent.

I know the show wants to make every important match come down to the last pokemon, but it wouldn't hurt anyone to have Ash win with 2 pokemon remaining.

At the End of the Fray
"I need to get me some boots!"
Score: 6/10

Glalie and Sceptile knock each other out with their attacks. You know, given how incredibly rare they are in the games, simultaneous knockouts sure seem to happen a lot in the anime.

Torkoal defeats Shiftry, but it takes a lot of damage. Meanwhile, TR Meowth looks the battle over, waiting for when Tyson's Meowth will emerge. Tyson sends out Hariyama, and its thick fat ability makes it near immune to fire attacks. Well that's-- surprisingly correct. Ash sends out Corphish, which gets knocked out in one attack, haha, loser.

Ash throws out Swellow to fight Hariyama, which, again, makes sense. Dammit episode, I'm supposed to be making fun of you, give me some material to work with! How can I make a joke about Swellow defeating Hariyama.

Tyson's Donphan's rollout proves quite powerful, but it doesn't expect insanity.
external image

Tyson sends out his Metagross, and while Swellow loses, it manages to create a small crack in its armor. Grovyle loses, but deals an enormous amount of damage by focusing its attacks on the crack, and Pikachu finishes the job.

Tyson sends out his final pokemon: Meowth, and TR Meowth celebrates, cheering for it. Meowth counters Pikachu's thunderbolts with its own thunderbolts to defend, even though you would have to assume Pikachu's thunderbolts are stronger and would overpower Meowth's. Meowth and Pikachu battle it out for several minutes with thunderbolts and iron tails. Eventually, both score direct hits with their iron tails at the same time, and both pokemon go down. Meowth stands back up, Pikachu doesn't. Cut to Tyson winning the entire tournament, the episode not even bothering to show us the second place winner.

Wait, the Meowth hating Persian subplot goes completely unresolved?!

Hoenn League Retrospective

Overall Score: 7/10
Best Battle: Ash versus Tyson
Best Episode: A Poached Ego
Worst Episode: Judgment Day!
Best Protagonist: Jessie
Worst Protagonist: Max
Best Side Character: Morrison
Worst Side Character: Tyson
Best Protagonist's Pokemon: Grovyle
Worst Protagonist's Pokemon: Torkoal
Best Side Pokemon: Meowth in Boots

The Hoenn League is solid. It has by far the highest quality filler of all of the arcs, though that's not really saying much, and it has less filler because it introduces pokemon contests to fill the space between gym battles, which was definitely an excellent decision by the writers. The gym battles left something to be desired, but the actually tournament was quite nice. The writers put a clear effort into making each minor character memorable by giving them a quirk or two, which I cut out of my write-ups but I did reflect it in the score. My key problem was Ash versus Tyson.

I did like the actual battle, that's not my problem. My problem is Tyson. I dislike the writers just reusing Harrison as blatantly as they did. Just introduce an older trainer with pokemon a tier above Ash's, have him derp around for awhile, and then knock Ash out of the tournament. It's kind of obnoxious. Tyson himself isn't interesting enough as a character to make that any less obnoxious than it is, and his flat characterization gets even more annoying. The actual battle, though, I will admit was quite good. Not anywhere as good as Ash/Drake or Ash/Gary, but it's still pretty good.

Like most Team Rocket-centric episodes, A Poached Ego is better than most of the hero-centric episodes, though it doesn't touch Go West, Young Meowth. Judgment Day! is horrible.

James was the best protagonist in season 6, but as time went on, I was surprised by Jessie, who proved to be a little more interesting and consistently a little funnier. It was like a graph, with James' funniness remaining high but static and Jessie's starting low but rising. I don't think I need to explain Max's low ranking.

I really like Morrison. I know a lot of people probably don't, but to be honest, I found him pretty refreshing. All of Ash's other rivals were either "Worthy Opponent" or Gary, so having one who's brash and loud is a nice change of pace, and unlike Richie, who won through luck, or Harrison and Tyson, who just seem a little more together than Ash, Morrison seems disorganized and immature.

Grovyle is pretty cool, Torkoal is not. Meowth in Boots is also, I think, pretty damn cool. I salute you, blatant ripoff of a popular movie franchise that got worse as it went along and inspired a spinoff that will no doubt be horrible.

May is a good replacement for Misty, and I will even say the better character. Misty never really had much going on; she wanted to be a water pokemon master, but rarely had the opportunity to actually anything with that, whereas May's contests are much more dynamic and because she's less experienced than Ash, she doesn't have a pseudo-mentor role that quickly becomes obsolete, unlike Misty, which is especially good because we don't need another "more experienced character" since we already have Brock.

All in all, I think this is the best arc yet, though primarily because the writers really had their **** more together than before.

The heroes head to Old Dale Town, where they plan to split up and continue on their own and WHAT
external image
You edited those riceball horribly before, but now you don't even bother to edit these ones? And what's especially confusing is that episode will later edit out other riceballs, I'm so confused by this.

Brock and Ash head one direction and May and Max the other, and the episode tries to recreate the sadness of when the heroes split up at the end of season 5, but it lacks the same punch.

Cut to Team Rocket claiming to Giovanni that they defeated Team Aqua and Team Magma, and he rewards them by assigning them to Antarctica. I see Giovanni is in Dick Mode today. Soon after, Team Rocket runs into Blowhard and Cassidy on their segways.
external image
Because nothing says "mafia" like segways. After realizing that Bim and Cassidy are outshining them with their segways and jetpacks and competency, they decide they need to reinvent themselves, and this will soon lead to something terrible.

Cut to Ash and Brock, who need to take different roads to reach Pallet Town and Pewter City. Uh... aren't they in Hoenn? Do the roads really diverge this soon? I mean, Pewter City is only two weeks from Pallet Town on foot, and they aren't even in the same part of the ah screw it. Brock declares this to have been the best trip ever, probably because its filler was of higher quality than the previous trips. Ash quickly reaches Viridian City because... it's right near Hoenn, I guess. I'm sorry, did I miss a goddamn plane trip or something?

In Viridian City, Ash meets a guy named Scott, who tells him that he might qualify for the Battle Frontier. Before Scott can explain what the Battle Frontier is, Agatha shows up. She introduces herself as the gym leader, and explains that she remodeled the gym. Scott tells Ash to battle Agatha for fun, and she agrees because both of the people she fought yesterday were terrible.

Ash sends out Pikachu, Agatha sends out Gengar. Pikachu's quick attack doesn't affect Gengar, and man, he deserves to lose for that. Gengar is a tough opponent, and Pikachu almost wins, but Agatha defeats it in the end, and she reveals that she's part of the Elite Four, and she's only filling in until the official gym leader arrives. Uh... what? Aren't the Elite Four virtually undefeatable? Aren't they the strongest trainers in their regions? How could you have one fill in for a gym leader, who is supposed to lose to people?

Well, enough of that. Scott explains the Battle Frontier to Ash: it's made of seven facilities spread throughout Kanto. I love how when he describes what Frontier Brains and Frontier Symbols are, he has to say "sort of like a gym leader/gym badge."

Team Rocket attacks, and people. People. This is why I've given this episode the lowest rating of any episode yet. I'd like us all to take a moment to grieve a good friend. He was amazing, a true hero, and stuck with us through thick and through thin. He was... the original Team Rocket motto.
external image
Sigh... A part of my childhood dies before my eyes, which begin to tear up. They even cut out the best part, "Team Rocket, blast off at the speed of light!" What... what were they thinking? I'm ready to cry.

After Agatha and Ash defeat them, Scott tells Ash to go to the Battle Frontier and leaves.

Ash arrives at his home in Pallet Town, and meets his mom, Professor Oak, and, surprisingly, Misty, who's replaced her Togepi with an Azurill because she needed a cute thing. Cold, Misty. Very cold. As the episode ends, Max and Professor Birch arrive in his jeep, so I guess he drove from Hoenn to Kanto in one day. That's... incredibly dangerous.

Everyone comes to Oak's lab, and Ash announces his intention to go to the Battle Frontier, and Ash's mom secretly wishes he would go back to school and at least have a shot at going to college one day like Gary. Since May wants to enter the Kanto pokemon contest circuit, they decide to go together.

Ash introduces May and Max to his Oaked pokemon, including Snorlax, who has a different voice actor. May also mentions that the writers decided she had too many pokemon and removed Skitty and Beautifly from her party.
external image
external image
Her Bulbasaur bonds with Ash's Bulbasaur, and a Squirtle Oak was keeping for newbie trainers starts to bond with her. I WONDER WHERE THIS IS GOING.

Squirtle wants to go with May, because it's completely logical for May to get not one but two pokemon that Ash already had. Well, when all is said and done, Ash Oaks Glalie and Torkoal and takes Phanpy with him, and May takes Squirtle and Oaks her Bulbasaur, and yes, the episode implies some Bulbasaur-on-Bulbasaur action is in the near future.

The Battle Factory is near Cerulean City, so Misty agrees to travel with the heroes for a while, and as the episode ends, Brock shows up with no explanation whatsoever.

Also, Ash and May purposely lowered themselves down to less than six Pokemon, because...? Do they hate their Pokemon and want to spend as much time away from them as possible? And already Glalie is ditched for more than 200 episodes... :(

To be fair, just about everyone is awesome compared to Max. I think he was just smart and set his hopes low by picking out Tracey as a person to admire.

I like this explanation.

A Real Cleffa-Hanger
"Lots of things run away from May's scary face!"
Score: 3/10

Brock starts the episode by mentioning that he left Ludicolo with his family because Ludicolo was actually useful in battle and we can't risk Brock taking the spotlight away from Ash.

They meet a wild Cleffa. Team Rocket shows up, and though they're defeated, Misty, Max, Pikachu, and Cleffa are swept into a nearby river, where they all proceed to bond.

May, Ash, and Brock run into a Clefairy and a Clefable who are searching for the Cleffa, and the group attempts to find the other group. They succeed. When Team Rocket attacks again, the Clefs use metronome, Munchlax reveals that it knows metronome too, and they all blast Team Rocket off again. They then let the humans watch their moon dance, from WAY back. Don't ask why there were no Cleffa the first time they did this dance.

The next morning, Misty leaves the group. This is what we call a really boring episode, which sucks, because it's an extremely rare Misty episode.

I'll be honest: I don't really mind. I dislike Glalie. It's competent, there's no doubt about it, but its voice is horrible. It sounds like a gurgly forty year-old truck driver, and because of its mouth design, it looks perpetually angry.

And also, it is not aesthetically pleasing.

Banette summons eerie blue flames and shocks itself with thunder while laughing like it's Satan.

How is that a good idea for a contest like this?

I somehow missed this post. In fairness, the judges also grade on cleverness and use of surprise.

Yeah, Katie was surprisingly fun, since she's like the only character who made heavy use of switch outs.

I don't think anyone has posted any BW eps on YouTube. You could try Veoh, crunchyroll, animecrazy, or Hulu (I know animecrazy has them but I honestly have no clue about the others)

Actually that reminds me... Anna, how have you been watching all of these Pokémon eps?

when i started watching the anime a few years ago, I did kanto, orange islands, johto, hoenn, battle frontier and some of sinnoh from a great bunch of links on megavideo. The same user had uploaded them all

then I lost the link to that somehow, so i continued watching sinnoh by searching for the eps on youtube, sometimes I found great links, sometimes the quality was awful. When sinnoh was done I didn't continue with BW, but I will prolly give it a shot when I find a good place to watch it

why do pokemon caught by team rocket always drop down to the heroes instead of blasting off like TR whenever ash attacks them?

Like TR captures pikachu, then one of ash's pokemon makes them blast off but magically pikachu always drops down instead.
