I've seen Kats tear up faces in non-crappy games at better-than-average elo. I don't think she's as bad as people say. She just requires some creative thinking because she's not a farm-to-30mins-and-rape type of carry. She pretty much needs to be running around constantly.

panth's passive gives him leeway since he becomes effectively immune to the silence

Definitely talk to HGR about his Lux play. Play a few games, laning with him playing Lux.

I used to play Lux as a poker, trying to grab kills and force people from lane. I've seen HGR do nothing but run back and forth behind his own creep waves.

Yet HGR is the one who goes 12/1/17 as Lux.

I hope you do, because I most certainly don't.

And that scenario is far too specific for my tastes. It's one thing to say that Kat has good synergy with Morgana or it's worth grabbing a BV, but it's another to say she works against teams with little CC. In a meta with CC out the ass. Of course she works against ill prepared teams, but so would anybody else, and not because of champion quality.

Kat is a balanced champion in that the damage she puts out is incredible if the other team is bad.

the problem is that doing well with kat relies more on the opposing team being bad(IE, they dont CC you the instant you pop your ult) than it does with you being good.

Since I play Morgana most of the time I always tell people to pick Katarina if they have her. 600 Damage Spell Shield blocking all CC. Hell, even if they manage to pop the shield she still gets off a ton of damage while I'm sitting there with my ultimate up. They have to attack one of us. Either me: Rod of Ages, Frozen Heart, or the Katarina with a 600 magic damage shield.

It's pretty fun. The only thing better is doing it with Nunu or Morde.

1. What's the best starting skill?

q if you're going to a sidelane or if there's any chance of a level 1 fight. if you're going mid for whatever reason e might be better since you can actually land it.

2. What ability do I prioritize?

e; it's easy-to-land aoe damage and the slow increases with level too.

3. What are some good items?

lots of ap (deathcap etc.) and a void staff the opponents are getting mr (which they should be but y'know). soulstealer actually works on her because you should almost never die. i still don't get it in serious games but it's certainly an option. your effective range is great, so you can afford to go very light on defenses.

absolutely do not get an evil tome first.

absolutely do not get a tear of the goddess first (and probably ever).

absolutely do not get a rod of ages, ever.

sorry i see way too many pubs getting those items. you need as much ap as possible as quickly as possible to stay ahead of the curve.

4. Any tips?

in lane, you want to land e a lot (qe/eq if possible, even q -> auto -> e if you're close enough) and if possible get out a quick autoattack for the bonus damage. but be aware that your mana costs are pretty hefty, so spamming may not get you too far against lane opponents with good sustain. if you're duolaning, you want to be with someone who can take advantage of your landing your skills to do a lot of damage. the shield helps you get out of bad situations, but never -count- on it; the amount shielded isn't huge and it doesn't grant any resists or anything. also try not to use abilities pointlessly, since your cooldowns are really long and a good opponent will take the opportunity to punish you or zone you for a while. oh yeah and a high-level e + one autoattack farms caster minions, but of course you usually don't want to push like this. e is also nice for blowing up wraiths past the earlygame.

once you have your r, you have fairly good burst in the form of qer/eqr (pop e after the r since there's a short delay before you can pop it anyway). note that the q bounce is only 1 second long, so the secondary hit is generally not enough to land this. r is also useful for stealing buffs/dragon/baron (though you're probably not going to beat out a smite) and for clearing lanes before recalling. be aware of when you can guarantee an r hit even without landing cc - close to a wall, around a corner, etc. also know when it's possible to get close enough to a far-off fight to help out with an r. this is mostly about just being familiar with the range, but yeah. it's kind of lame but the range indicator cuts out in the middle, and you only see where the laser starts and ends.

in a teamfight, your role is to stay behind everyone, shield the opponents' focus target (of course it's ideal to just shield everyone but a good team will be going for one person, and you want to make sure you get both hits of w on that person), and use everything else as you see fit. that is to say, you have a lot of options to control your fight, and whom you should snare/slow depends greatly on the situation. but in general you want to throw out q and e and then r as many people as possible/the high-priority targets. unless you're sure you're safe, absolutely do not go in to try and get passive procs: they do relatively little damage, and it's suicidal. you're at your best when the other team lines up for you, so all else being equal you prefer to fight in narrow places.

when in a standoff-type situation (like both teams grouped up mid), a q on an exposed target can create a won fight; if you're ahead by enough your full combo is even enough to kill/almost kill a squishy. try shooting through walls and the like to catch someone by surprise.

if you want blue buff, GET HELP for it. it takes you literally forever to kill the golem by yourself.

you are kind of underwhelming at endgame, so try to create an advantage in the midgame and ride it to victory (well of course you should have a carry for endgame, but i mean in a solo queue 'can only rely on yourself' type of situation). your damage output when fed and before opponents have had much opportunity to get mr is surprisingly high.

also don't fall into the trap of thinking a good kda means you played well. you should pretty much always have a good kda with lux, so even when you go legendary you need to be thinking about what you did wrong and how you can improve.

How good a mid is she?

pretty matchup-dependent. you rely on using your range to keep putting on damage that the opponent can't return. against someone who can compete with you in terms of range or has a lot of sustainability, you're much worse. and you do still need to get into autoattack range of the minions to last hit them, so long range e isn't exactly a free pass to winning the lane. you do need to be good at hitting with it. also a champion like vayne is a huge pain (if she knows what she's doing) because she can tumble away from e and have the tumble back up by the time your e comes back up.

that should cover some of the basic stuff. feel free to talk to me whenever - i have a lot of experience with her.

I've never understood that. By the time you need it, you'll have to click the plus sign then use it, which might make it a second too late or something. Unless there's a very fast shotctut to doing that that I don't know about.

Actually, I don't know any keyboard shortcuts outside of using QWER123456, Y, L, and spacebar.

Yeah, I did miss a few. X click is the same as A click. And I know alt+skill does something, but I forget exactly what. I've heard of smartcasting, but I don't know how to do that or what exactly "smartcasting" even means.

On an unrelated note, I'm wondering how Karma is going to be after the healing sustain nerf. Her healing is already underwhelming compared to other supports, so she might even escape untouched.

She's untouched. She was actually used sort of as a balance role model (as far as the heal explicitly goes).

His ultimate used to heal for a sort of set amount and would ignore resistances. It would heal for the amount stated on the tooltip and was changed to only heal for a proportion of the actual damage dealt which takes resistances into account.

He wasn't balanced tbqh, but he needed MINOR nerfs, not the absolute demolishing he got. The problem was he barely had to build tanky to be able to survive anything while doing significant damage and being almost impossible to escape from.

Solution: give him slightly higher spellvamp to compensate. Problem solved and now he's, like, counterable by Ignite and stuff!
