Oh yeah, I waited all night for a Wii. None of my friends wanted to come, so I went by myself. It snowed, hailed, rained at various points of the night, and both windy and freezing at all points of the night. There were a bunch of guys around my age in line, but they were idiots, so I made friends with a couple of parents picking up a Wii for their kid. Good time! We made two Tim Horton runs.

Comics specifically, but sure, podcasts in general. I'll make a post of other podcasts I listen to after I finish the PAX Bombcast.

OK SO

*SPOILERS*

Important things of note:

Barry remembers the Flashpoint universe, but not the old DCU.
Grifter got a 2 page spread and was shown prominently with the new universe heroes, even the JL, so there's a good chance he's gonna be an important dude.
Sinestro may actually become a good guy, since he was shown grouped with the other heroes in the New universe pics.

FLASHPOINT #5 SPOILERS

You know, I'm kind of tired of speedsters forgetting they have super speed just so they can get shot or stabbed or punched, or what have you.

And I don't know who Cosmic Red-Hooded Avatar woman is, but when she's talking about timeline being "split into three" or whatever, she's literally talking about the DCU, Wildstorm, and Vertigo, isn't she? I see what you did there, Johns. Also seems like a set up for some event in the future. <_<

And I liked the ending, cheesy though it was.

Flashpoint 5 was a weak issue with a nice epilogue and great art.
Justice League 1 would have been a better book had Johns cut Cyborg out of it, but it was still alright.
The DC universe ends as it starts: middling Geoff Johns books.

Bring on the good comics!

As far as the first event mini-series, who knows.

Flashpoint #5 was actually better than what I was expecting compared to last issue.
JL is going to be bogged down with tons of exposition and backstory, HOPEFULLY culminating in a huge-scale battle against Darkseid. But the origin looks to be slowing it down a bit. It should at least be a good read once the whole storyline is done, but as a first issue it wasn't strong enough.
Then again, I'm coming off of Morrison's JLA and The Authority which both just go "LOOK AT THESE GUYS. WHO EVEN CARES WHO THEY ARE, THEY KICK SO MUCH ASS. LET'S WATCH THEM KICK ASS. DO YOU SEE THIS CRAZY **** GOING DOWN ON THIS PAGE??? F*** YEAH, SUPERTEAMS."

I actually just read Morrison's JLA #1 for comparison. Its so much better its not even funny, even with Howard Porter compared to Jim Lee. So much more STORY packed in those 22 pages, interesting villains, introduces the characters without delving into origins, cool JLA s*** like Green Lantern using his powers in space battles, intense, clever escape pod scenes, Flash outracing Superman, Batman showing up and being a badass. I would gladly pay $3.99 for that comic.

I have a feeling DC really should've started with a stronger book then JL #1. If I was a new reader and I paid $4 bucks for this book that was suppose to be this big amazing awesomeness that pushed us into the new universe, I'd be like, "So...that's it? uh..."

I don't think it's fair to compare this book to Morrison's; Morrison is a much, much better writer than Johns, and his JLA run is one of the all time best. This was just alright. If you look at it in a vacuum -- that is, not compared to other runs and not as a way to launch a new line -- JL was fine.

I do agree that it's not the book DC should come out with. What's there to draw in readers, the promise of Superman vs. Batman?

Yes.

And I haven't read JL #1 yet, but I don't think "not as good as Morrison's JLA #1" is really much of a put down since you could say that about pretty much any #1.

He never said anything about decompression, he just said writers didn't have to write for trades if they didn't want to. That storyline could go on for 3 issues, or 12 issues even.

Decompression is just what Johns does.

And I'd be a liar if I didn't say JL is the book I'm least interested in out of the 3 he's doing!

Yeah it looks really weird but I'll chalk it up to it not have gone through post-production yet.

It needs a cape, for one thing, and something on the waist to keep it from being a big block of blue. I know the red trunks are gone for good, but the new comics costume has that big red belt, which works just as well. I like the comics costume, too, but this one....

And less of dat bulge is always a good thing

Alright, back from the shop. Gonna post impressions of JL. Typing as I read.

*SPOILERS*

GCPD seems better equipped than usual.

"What is that, a Transformer?" Suddenly I'm fully aware that this is taking place in 2006.

Hal's being kind of a cocky ass. I like it, rather than him just acting like he will in the "future". Batman's being a bit of a dick, too, which seems like usual Johns fair, but based on the end of FLashpoint #5, he's not going to be like that after the first arc.

"Hold on a second...You're not just some guy in a bat costume, are you? ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!" - The Best.

Batman jacking the ring is great.

What...what did Hal THINK he was looking for? <_<

Hal going in guns blazing, some things never change. Also, still has full faith in the Guardians. Pfffff.

VIC STONE. Didn't expect to see him. Nice.

Not Cyborg yet, and Bats and GL are here. I'm sure whatever happens in this first arc is going to be what causes his new origin. Maybe his cyborg parts are going to be Apocalyptic tech now?

Hal gets suckerpunched for being a cocky *****, excellent. And at the same time as this is coming out, he's gonna be a bum in Green Lantern. Between this and the movie, new readers aren't gonna hve a great impression of Hal!

I'm glad that at the very least Superman is smiling on that last page. I was worried that he was gonna be all GRRR ANGRY SUPERMAN.

*END SPOILERS*

Honestly, it's pretty much exactly what I wanted. Yeah, it's very different from Morrison's JLA #1, but I had more fun with it felt it did a very good job for what it was trying to do. I'm not gonna pretend I'm not biased towards enjoying books structured like this, but I'm extremely satisfied with the final product, and I look forward to #2. No doubt this is going to read FAR better as a trade, though.

...It has Dick as Batman, though, and Red Robin and Damian (I think) were in it, so it's kind of hard to just throw that back into the stories that took place during her time as Oracle.

Unless the "present" of the DCNU is set a few years AFTER that story, which is unlikely.

It's more of a mess than you guys think!
