Hello all and welcome, at long last, to the actual rankings! The nominations are in, the write-ups are done, so let's... get this trainwreck on the rails. But before we do, a reminder of the nomination rules:

-Each nominator nominated 5 songs.
-Each nominator was limited to 1 song per game and 2 songs per series.
-Licensed music was allowed as long as this wasn't abused.
-We strongly discouraged gaming the system by nominating music that the nominator knew would be highly ranked (say, the top 5 from CG7's last ranking topic).

We're planning to post 15 write-ups a day, with 10 on the final day, just to expedite things a bit, but if this is too slow or too fast we're open to suggestions.

The next post will be a list of the 100 nominations in alphabetical order, and shortly following that will be the first set of rankings. Please enjoy~

Personally, I put very good odds on Crazy Bus being last for both of them, and a certain song I shall not name to be first for both of them. Though I suppose we'll see.

Here we go! As I did in my last topic, going to post which tracks I heard before this happened.

Castle Crashers - Stage Cleared/The Race Around the World
Crazy Bus - Title Theme
Demon's Crest - Beyond the Colosseum
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Lockjaw's Saga
Ever17 (Xbox 360)- Karma
Final Fantasy X - Rikku's Theme
Final Fantasy X - Servants of the Mountain
Final Fantasy XIII - Blinded by Light
G-Darius - B.T. Dutch
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - Jowd ~A Captive of Fate
Last Ranker - This Journey without End
Metal Gear Solid 4 - Main Theme
Okami - Ryoshima Plains
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 - Divine Entity
Skies of Arcadia - Bombardment 2
Sonic CD - Sonic Boom
Super Mario 3D Land - Ghost House
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Winning Road (Roy's Hope)
Tales of Vesperia - Ring a Bell
Touhou 8: Imperishable Night - Gensokyo Millenium ~ History of the Moon
Touhou: Ten Desires - Shoutoku Legend ~ True Administrator
Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru 8 - lastendconductor
Xenoblade - Unfinished Battle

So I have heard twenty-three total. Out of those, I have heard the following when playing their games:

Final Fantasy X - Rikku's Theme
Final Fantasy X - Servants of the Mountain
Okami - Ryoshima Plains
Skies of Arcadia - Bombardment 2
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Winning Road (Roy's Hope)
Tales of Vesperia - Ring a Bell

Six only! The following I heard when playing Brawl so it sort of counts as number seven I guess:

Sonic CD - Sonic Boom

Now, onward!

I'm just so damn lazy.

I had to ban xp from this topic to prevent him from winning again. <_<

It's not my fault that my favorite songs are just that good!

And also, that unlike with CG7 last time, I was unwilling to work around the fact that I know what both of you think of over 1000 songs, and was just going to ignore that and post my favorites/what I usually post in these topics despite knowing it would lead to me sweeping your top 2 at least, and probably landing everything in the Top 7 or so for CG7. >_>

Wouldn't have chosen EXEC_Z/. again given it just won CG7's topic.

I was thinking it over and my nomination would have been something like...

.hack//G.U. Vol 2//Reminisce - Here I Come
Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia - EXEC_RE=NATION/.
Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica - EXEC_SPHILIA/.
Xenosaga III - Godsibb
Ys: The Oath in Felghana - Sealed Time

Which, according to Kenri would have gotten me his Top 2, and probably 3 in the Top 5. CG7 gave me a non-answer but I'd predict at least 3 in the Top 5 still. >_>

100. Crazy Bus – Title Theme
User: Master Epyon
Link:

First Impressions: I suppose this is karma for introducing Master Epyon to it in the first place.

Thoughts: This is the worst video game track I have ever heard. Forget Homina Homina, forget Happy Shabby Life, forget Screaming Target, this is the epitome of awful game music. It is so incredibly bad that it somehow manages to wrap around and become incredible. Whoever made this must have been drunk or felt that mixing random sounds together would be fun. Maybe for the maker, but for us? Anyone who hears this feels trolled. Utterly trolled. Congratulations to Title Theme, it is the only track I have ever heard to get this score, a score where there is absolutely nothing redeemable about it.

Rating: 0/10

99. Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Fukkatsu BLACK LABEL – Xanadu (Stage 2-B)
User: SSBDarren64
Link:

First Impressions: What the everloving holy am I listening to.

Thoughts: This is, to put it lightly, an utter mess. I have no idea where it’s going half the time. The effects are high pitched and annoying. The pauses between notes at times breaks it up uncomfortably. That one part that rises and lowers in tone swiftly is especially bad. This is, like, Crazy Bus’ second cousin twice removed or something.

Rating: 1.5/10

98. Phantasy Star II – Under
User: azuarc
Link:

First Impressions: Yeah, this is under a lot of things I would rather listen to.

Thoughts: We start off in a terrible manner with a beat that makes my brain throb. Then it goes into a high pitched section that changes my feelings from nauseated to thoroughly annoyed. I want to play Phantasy Star games, but if this is the type of music it comes with, I may have to mute the television while I do.

Rating: 2/10

97. Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck – Dippy the Dinosaur
User: Ed Bellis
Link:

First Impressions: Good gosh why.

Thoughts: No, no, and did I mention no? This does not work for me. It feels loud, obnoxious, and generally dumb. Those pot-tapping noises or whatever are especially irritating, as is… well, everything else really. If you want to see a part I disliked, move the video cursor somewhere random in the track and listen to it. There you go.

Rating: 2.5/10

96. DJ Max Portable Black Square – Stop
User: JONALEON1
Link:

First Impressions: Why the holy heck would anyone like this.

Thoughts: I have said this before, but for newcomers to my tastes, I am not a fan of rap. This starting off with rap was a bad sign from the getgo. Then I realized the male and female vocalists are not particularly good, and the lyrics are awful. The background music is lacking too. This does just about everything wrong for me.

Rating: 2.5/10

95. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 – Ending Theme
User: FL81
Link:
Link I Used:

First Impressions: Did you guys know I don’t like saxophones? Because I don’t.

Thoughts: Blargh. This might be okay if I had a tolerance for saxophones. Unfortunately I do not, and three fourths of this darned thing is full of it. The rest does not even have the decency to be good. It makes me wish I could have spent that four minutes listening to almost anything else. The section at the end is even worse, amazingly.

Rating: 2.5/10

94. Persona 3 – Mass Destruction (Reincarnation Version)
User: swordz9
Link:

First Impressions: BABY BABY BABY BABY YEAAAAAAAAAAAH

Thoughts: I cannot believe it, but I vastly prefer the original to this. And I am not a huge fan of the original. The higher pitched female vocals are not a credit to the team. Nor is the length of the track. It also suffers from being rap. Most rap tracks I do not like, and this is not an exception. Usually I am fond of Persona tracks, but this one, absolutely not.

Rating: 2.5/10

93. We Love Katamari – Blue Orb
User: Ed Bellis
Link:

First Impressions: Could someone tell this track to please stop stuttering?

Thoughts: I might actually like this if it consisted of some of the mellow techno effects and the vocals. The problem? It has more than that. Of main annoyance is how it is broken up the entire time with small pauses. That technique can be used fairly well, but it is done so often here that it is not a relaxing listen at all. I felt on edge, as if I wanted to grab it around the throat and throw it off a cliff for making me tense. What a jerk piece.

Rating: 3/10

92. G-Darius – B.T. Dutch
User: FL81
Link:

First Impressions: Can I have Adam back?

Thoughts: G-Darius continues to live up to its tradition of odd music. This one is a miss for me though. It has a feeling of being all over the place, which does not sit well with me in this case. The obnoxious “you-you-you” doesn’t help either. Then you get that weird gasping and that makes it even more awkward. The only redeeming part is a few of the effects near the beginning, and they go away far too quickly.

Rating: 3.5/10

91. Mega Man X3 – Gravity Beetle Stage
User: Master Epyon
Link:

First Impressions: Ugh Mega Man X music.

Thoughts: Here is something Kenri and I tend to agree on. We are not fond of Mega Man X music. Feel free to throw stones at me for that opinion. For me, they are loud, unappealing, and lack the catchy rhythms that went along with the Mega Man tracks I liked. This is no exception. It is not ear-bleedingly bad, but it is not good at all. The worst part is I actually want to play Mega Man X games, but I am not looking forward to their soundtracks.

Rating: 3.5/10

90. Treasure Quest – Prophecy
User: azuarc
Link:

First Impressions: Vocals why have you forsaken me?

Thoughts: I think my opinion on liking vocals in video game tracks is pretty well known by this point. Here is a pretty fantastic way of subverting that. The chorus is sort of nice, but the rest? Really, really bad. Even worse is that there is literally a shhhhing noise. I loathe shhhhhhhs. It hurts me to hear them. I am not even exaggerating, if someone tries to shush me like that in real life, I want to punt them out a window.

Rating: 3.5/10

89. Breath of Fire II – Boss Theme
User: Mega Mana
Link:

First Impressions: Check it out, unimpressive Breath of Fire music. I’m so shocked.

Thoughts: A short, uncatchy tune that leaves no sort of impact or makes me want to hear it again. Sounds like Breath of Fire to me all right. This is another series I want to play, but not for the music. Gosh not for the music, which is incredibly unimpressive. It is especially saddening because usually I enjoy boss themes. This one shames the ones I like.

Rating: 3.5/10

88. Mario Strikers Charged – Luigi’s Theme
User: Kamekguy
Link:

First Impressions: What is this, bad Spanish music?

Thoughts: You know what I don’t like in my music? Clapping. The majority of the time, clapping sucks to have in a track. The fact that the rest of it is fairly bad is just a bonus. Then again, I can’t claim I was expecting anything fantastic out of a Mario soccer game, let alone in the music category. (If anyone comes in to defend it from my attacks I will be saddened that the point was lost.)

Rating: 4/10

87. Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 – Summer Air
User: Mega Mana
Link:

First Impressions: Just what I needed, bad air noises.

Thoughts: I thought a rollercoaster was supposed to be exciting. Mind you, I find them “exciting” for all the wrong reasons (namely the terror I feel whenever I am anywhere on one), but this track makes them outright boring. It has some okay strings, but they get drowned out by those darn whooshing sort of effects. I don’t even know what to call them. It also feels like it’s far longer than four minutes, but I blame that on the boredom thing.

Rating: 4/10

86. Iridion 3D Music – Planet Iridion Prime
User: Ace_Killkoy
Link:

First Impressions: Get the heck out of here.

Thoughts: You know what this track forgot to do? Be appealing in any way. The beat is annoying, the effects are annoying, everything else if fairly annoying, let’s just call this the love child of “annoying music” and “whatever music” because that sort of sums it up. And I just rambled in this entire write up to hide the fact that I really have nothing to say about it besides I did not like it much.

my turn

100. Crazy Bus - Title Theme
Nominated by: Epyon

Thanks Epyon. Just thanks. You are a friend.

What's left to even say about Crazy Bus? It's the perfect theme song for humanity. It's the tangled mess of flaws and imperfections that all of us try to keep locked up inside. It's the destruction and suffering and death and unhappiness that people inflict on each other on a daily basis. To listen to Crazy Bus is to listen to everything bad in the world all at once. In some small way, we're all crazies and we're all riding the same bus.

99. G-Darius - B.T. Dutch
Nominated by: FL81

Seven minutes long (god i hope it loops somewhere in there) and only questionably music. By which I mean that i sounds like some Home Depot employee got incredibly bored one day and tried to make music using only the objects immediately around him, with limited success to the say the least. Machinery noises are something I honestly like a lot in music so B.T. Dutch had potential there, but it needs to be backed up by something, anything that I actually find pleasant to listen to. Because it cannot stand on its own. G-Darius has a ****ing weird soundtrack in general, but it has some tracks I quite enjoy, like Adam and Feature Perfect from 7. Even Kimera II is okay. This is just too out there for me.

98. Alan Wake - The Poet and the Muse
Nominated by: Kamekguy

I should probably address how I feel about songs with VOCALS because that seems to be a topic of some contention! The best way to describe it would probably be to say that I don't prefer them to instrumentals, or prefer instrumentals to songs with vocals. It's really a case by case thing, though fair warning: some songs with vocals will get very high rankings here.

...This is not one of them. I don't really like the singer here and the lyrics are kind of stupid. I'm not sure if it's trying to be deep or if it's a parody so successful that I can't even tell it's a parody, but it's dumb if you're just sort of paying attention to it and really dumb if you stop to analyze it. The poet's stories were so convincing that his lover drowned herself because she believed there really was treasure at the bottom of a lake? Moral of the story: ...don't be so good at storytelling or very stupid people will kill themselves? Maybe it makes sense/isn't dumb to people who've played Alan Wake. The song also gets really weird at about 3 minutes in, because up 'til that point it had been a sort of simple folk song and then all of a sudden ROCK AND/OR ROLL and it doesn't work very well.

97. Final Fantasy XIII - Fighting Fate
Nominated by: electricpiper

Fighting Fate starts off decent enough but then it quickly becomes kind of a loud mess. It almost seems like the sound quality is off or something because everything sounds really muddled and... bad. Or maybe the sound quality is fine and it's just bad in general. The vocals sound like someone singing from inside an organ and I cannot make out a rhyme nor a reason to any of the instrumentation. It can't decide if it wants to dark and imposing or heroic or whimsical or just a mess. And then it decides on the latter, and goes in a screechy and obnoxious direction. Fun times.

96. Tales of Eternia - Mid Boss 2
Nominated by: agesboy

...Sort of like the above, except Mid Boss 2 just sounds really harsh and grating and not pleasant to listen to. I give it the nod over Fighting Fate though because it's at least kind of interesting. I think I'd like a remix of this that used some different samples, because that's really the main thing I have a problem with here. The whole "someone beats on a trash can lid while a fly periodically buzzes past the microphone" angle doesn't work for me. On any level.

95. Desire - Reflector (Unlimited)
Nominated by: JONALEON

Ryu Umemoto, eh? I'm not his biggest fan or anything but I definitely like a few pieces of his in particular. They tend to be closer to chiptunes than this one though (<3 YU-NO). I actually really like parts of this piece, but overall it's just too noisy for my liking. It is oppressively noisy and cluttered, and a lot of what I do like about it gets drowned out by that.

94. Breath of Fire II - Boss Theme
Nominated by: Mega Mana

...There's nothing really wrong with this, but at the same time I just wish it was better. The first two seconds are the most interesting part, and after that it's just a very unexceptional boss theme. It's sort of repetitive too. I also feel like it would start to grate if I had to listen to it for more than a minute, but whatever, can't really hold that against it when it's not more than a minute long.

93. Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City - Disturbances ~ Their Own Justice
Nominated by: FL81

A lot of the same criticisms I gave above apply to this one as well. The difference is that Disturbances ~ Their Own Justice is, to me, a bit more interesting, so it cancels out the piece being long enough that it actually does start to grate. Also, this isn't really here or there, but I think I slightly prefer the PC-8801 version. >_>

92. Super Robot Wars OGs - Ialdabaoth Apotheosized
Nominated by: agesboy

I actually really like the soundtrack to SRW OGs and I remember being quite disappointed when it didn't get into the OST Contest. This is not one of my favorites though. In fact this might be my least favorite track from the game that I've heard. >_>; Again, it does some things I like, but spends a lot of time just making noise and being generally cluttered. I'm sounding like a broken record at this point. A good example though is 0:12 through 0:19. Don't really like that, and don't really think it serves a purpose, and it's kind of indicative of everything I dislike about this piece.

91. BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend - Soukyu no Hikari (Short Version)
Nominated by: Phase

So this is... okay. Insofar as Jpop or Jrock or whatever goes, it's fairly unextraordinary. Nothing really jumps out at me as being especially bad or especially good, except the length, which is just too short, a problem shared by a lot of short versions of songs. Now, I definitely prefer that to a song being too long, but this definitely needed another minute or three IMO.

90. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Winning Road (Roy's Hope)
Nominated by: SuperAngelo

I love FE6 to death, but it really doesn't have good music, and Brawl didn't really fix that. This is a very middling track that I find myself turning against as it goes on just because I wish it would do something interesting auuuugh. It's supposed to sound heroic and all, but it's a very manufactured kind of heroic that ends up leaving me feeling... nothing at all.

89. Sengoku Rance - Rebirth the Edge
Nominated by: agesboy

...One of several pieces that ended up ranking fairly low just because I tend to prefer simpler, quieter music. >_>; For me, Rebirth the Edge just ends up being chaotic and difficult to listen to. I wish there were more sections like 2:05 through 2:13 because that would break the piece up and make it much more my speed. Also not really sure what's up with the two minutes of silence at the end? I assume that isn't supposed to be there so I didn't really factor it into the ranking.

88. RosenkreuzStilette - Last Battle
Nominated by: FL81

Yeah... This is just not doing it for me. I really don't have many criticisms of it except that it's not my kind of music at all. It has a few neat sections, but overall isn't something I want to listen to again. ...I should probably also mention that I generally don't like battle music, so it doesn't really surprise me that I'm not a big fan of this.

87. Phantasy Star II - Under
Nominated by: azuarc

Another victim of the "just sort of unexceptional" criticism. It's... okay. The kind of music that I'd hear during a game and not really think about while playing the game, and then forget about immediately after it stops playing. Which unfortunately leaves me without very much to say. <_<

86. Castle Crashers - Stage Cleared/The Race Around the World
Nominated by: SSBDarren64

What I've heard of Castle Crashers' soundtrack has been VERY hit and miss. Winterbliss? Big hit. Race Around the World? ...not so much. Even then, though, Race Around the World is, itself, kind of hit and miss. I like almost all of it, to a degree, except for that banjo(?) section, which I can't bring myself to not really hate. Part of that is that I don't think it fits with the rest of the piece, but a bigger issue is that it's just sort of obnoxious. No offense meant to banjos in general though. (Well, some offense.)

I didn't listen to all of the (not) 30 songs listed, but a few quick comments...

CG7:
99 - really? And here I had it 13th out of FIVE HUNDRED songs that I ranked.
98 (my song) - *glum* ok...I didn't expect it to go far. I just like it.
92 - ick, agreed
90 (my song) - *more glum* I thought you might actually like that. I do. I wasn't *trying* to get two of the bottom eleven, honest.

Kenri:
98 - I really like Poet and Muse. However, I also don't even listen to the lyrics. Vocals are literally just another instrument to me, so I honestly have no idea how ridiculous the words are.
92 - I was sad SRW didn't get into the contest either, but I at least put it in the JFF. I don't dislike this song, but I don't know the OST so well as to know the others by way of comparison.
87 (my song) - nod, that's pretty much what I expected from Under.
86 - I actually think the "banjo" section is the best part of the song. =x

Rating: 4/10

Wow. This went down over my Nanostray nomination? I'm surprised, and at the same time, kind of not.
This song has a special vibe to it that I've always appreciated, so it might have been more of a personal thing. Unfortunately, the loop is small, so it tends to repeat before doing much (and Manfred hasn't made a remix of it, though I'd prefer a Nanostray soundtrack, first).
Probably wasn't the best song from the game I could have nominated, but I figured I'd post something a bit unusual. Plus, you're tastes seem to be the polar opposite of mine anyway. >_>

I would have posted a superior song from the sequel, but it's still too soon.

Oh, by the way, TAG.

Kenri's such a nice guy.

Okay, next fifteen!

85. Blazer Drive – Galuda 003
User: Ed Bellis
Link:

First Impressions: Oh hai techno.

Thoughts: Nothing special here. It sort of has a throbbing noise that makes my brain, in response, throb, and it does not appreciate that. It also has something that sounds vaguely vocalish but not that vocalish and mostly silly. A few decent effects save this from plummeting further down the list.

Rating: 4/10

84. The Great Gatsby – Martini Rag
User: Kamekguy
Link:

First Impressions: The name of the game and track is literally more interesting than anything it does.

Thoughts: They really can make a video game out of anything, huh? There is this one effect near the beginning that is really cool, and if the entire thing was that effect, this might actually get pretty far on my list. Unfortunately it only shows up, like, twice per loop. And that makes me sad. As does the rest of it. Its length also leaves little room to improve.

Rating: 4.5/10

83. Sword of Mana – Courage and Pride from the Heart
User: agesboy
Link:

First Impressions: Am I biased against Mana music or something?

Thoughts: No, seriously, what is with me and Mana music? This has a few sections that almost make me think Castlevania for whatever incredibly bizarre reason, but it is far worse than most Castlevania, so go figure that one out. This seems like triumphant music, but even for triumphant music, it is pretty poor. It came sort of close to reaching average, but a few of the portions were irritating enough for me to think it needed to be lower.

Rating: 4.5/10

82. Yoshi’s Story – Love Is In the Air
User: Kamekguy
Link:

First Impressions: That love has nothing to do with how this track sounds.

Thoughts: So you know how I usually like strings? Not so much in this case. The strings here just have a… like… rubbing feeling to them. Yes I know that probably makes no sense, but it is annoying to say the least. The background, lighter strings are a bit better, but do little to help out. This also suffers from going nowhere. I kept waiting for it to develop somehow and it never did. Seriously, does anyone know what this has to do with love?

Rating: 4.5/10

81. Jet Force Gemini – Sekhmet
User: todbot1
Link:

First Impressions: I paid more attention to the box art than the track. Not a good sign.

Thoughts: I might have been more forgiving if this track was shorter. It is, however, a fairly long track when taking into account that I do not care for it much. I was tired of it one minute in, to give an explanation for how this got. The only part I cared for was somewhat past the halfway mark, and even that was not that good. The track seems like a tension-building one, and while those can be good for atmosphere, I rarely care to hear them.

80. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap – Minish Village
User: Master Epyon
Link:

First Impressions: Why pick this as a Zelda representation?

Thoughts: I have barely any experience with The Minish Cap’s soundtrack. In fact, this might be the first one I have heard. This has “average town theme” written all over it. I could easily imagine it in an old RPG. The problem is that average town themes never stand out to me, hence the word average. Therefore, this is not a particularly stellar track. I guess the chimes are sort of nice. And it is short, so I am not forced to listen to it too long.

Rating: 4.5/10

79. Gungriffon: The Eurasian Conflict – Theme of Gungriffon
User: MycroProcessor
Link:

First Impressions: This lacks guns and griffons. I am disappoint.

Thoughts: That rough-sounding instrument needs to go away. The rest of it manages to stay consistently around the average mark, maybe even higher, but I hate that one instrument. It sounds like the kind that you spin the top around and it makes a rattling, staticish noise of some kind. …I AM GOOD WITH WORDS.

Rating: 4.5/10

78. Warblade – In-Game Music
User: JONALEON1
Link:

First Impressions: Feels a bit long, but remains almost okay.

Thoughts: What an amazingly bland title, with a somewhat annoying beat that is sort of redeemed by some other effects. It seems longer than it should be. Maybe it loops, but I cannot tell if it does, and that is usually a bad sign. Either it means it all sounds so similar that I’m left guessing, or I just didn’t care enough to try and tell.

Rating: 4.5/10

77. Bomberman 64: The Second Attack – Warship Noah
User: Master Epyon
Link:

First Impressions: Sort of has a cool noise that comes up occasionally. And that really is all there is to say.

Thoughts: Great, now I have to do an entire write-up on this without knowing what else to say. I like that noise, but other than that, the rest just kind of blends together. It winds up being pretty average. I find most music from this soundtrack to do that. I rarely dislike any of them. However, I also rarely like them in a particular fashion. So yeah.

Rating: 5/10

76. Sonic 3D Blast – Volcano Valley Act 1
User: tazzyboyishere
Link:

First Impressions: Another mediocre Sonic track, but at least it lacks vocals.

Thoughts: Sonic soundtracks in general do not impress me. I have come across a few that I like, but most fall under the average or lower barrier. Vocal Sonic tracks are even worse; I usually hate those, even though I tend to like vocal songs in general. This contains a few effects that stand out, even though I do not care for them. It does nothing to outright insult me, so I guess this actually gets one of the higher rankings from me Sonic wise.

User: Kamekguy

First Impressions: These lyrics. They sure are something.

Thoughts: I almost want to say this sounds like it should be a fairy tale or myth, except it just does not appeal to me that much. Really, it is sort of a confusing track. I like the vocalist to some extent, but feel he could have been better. The strings might have been good, but fall short. The lyrics might have been interesting, but they turn out not to be. And then we have that random speed up near the end that is sort of, uh, bizarre. Yeah.

Rating: 5/10

74. Katawa Shoujo – Parity
User: Phase
Link:

First Impressions: Nowhere near the best piano track that could have been picked.

Thoughts: I have heard a few Katawa Shoujo tracks, courtesy of Kenri (who is still trying to get me to play it, and I will… eventually), and they were all better than this. I like most piano pieces. This one is a bit too, um, light-hearted? Like, it gives me a feeling that I generally would not look for a piano track to give me. Those clopping noises are not a credit either, but they have the decency to remain short.

Rating: 5/10

73. Super Mario 3D Land - Ghost House
User: Master Epyon
Link:

First Impressions: This didn’t stand a ghost of a chance.

Thoughts: I feel bad for saying this in regards to like three of Master Epyon’s picks, but this is another average track. I have no problems with it other than it being sort of dull. The strings are kind of okay. It also has the courtesy to remain short. I still lack much interest though. Then again, I am not as familiar with Mario soundtracks. Maybe if I knew more about them or had grown up with them, I would care more. …Honestly, probably not. Anyhow, sorry Master Epyon. You’re a fantastic guy, but none of your pieces resonated particularly with me, so you’re the first to have everything posted.

Rating: 5/10

72. Rusty – Queen in the Dark Night
User: FL81
Link:

First Impressions: Whatever.

Thoughts: This would have gotten a far better reaction from me than “whatever” if the entire thing was like the introduction. But it changes tactics and falls on its face as a result. The bells try to help out, to their credit, but are not strong enough to do so. I wanted to like this more, it just was trying really hard at the end to make me not like it!

Rating: 5/10

71. Blazing Angels – Main Theme
User: Ace_Killjoy
Link:

First Impressions: Standard triumphant music and little else.

Thoughts: From the pictures and genre of the game, this probably fits it pretty well. Too bad I am not that fond of music like this. It blends in my mind with music from like ten thousand other forms of media, doing nothing to stand out, and as a result hits the average mark with a brutal thud. At least it does not drag on too long, if it went any more than two minutes I would have gotten thoroughly bored.

85-71, or: my writeups somehow get even worse

85. Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck - Dippy the Dinosaur
Nominated by: Ed Bellis

Oh man. I am so glad this song is better than its name and the name of the game it's from; I was worried for a second there. Dippy the Dinosaur (god that name is bad) actually does a lot of things I like. For example, the section from 0:15 to 0:28 and all similar sections. However, it also does quite a lot I don't like; in particular it throws in some silly sound effects here and there that don't really serve much purpose except to annoy me and remind me I'm listening to a piece named "Dippy the Dinosaur". Ehhhh...

84. Blazing Angels - Main Theme
Nominated by: Ace_Killjoy

Is it just me or do a lot of Western-made games these days get orchestrated main themes in a style very much similar to this? It definitely seems that way and I really just sort of group them all together in my mind. I don't dislike the style, per se, it's just a lot of them sound very same-y and generic. To its credit, Blazing Angels goes in a much more somber direction than a lot of them, which differentiates it slightly, though I'm still not a huge fan of it.

83. Legend of Zelda, The - Minish Village
Nominated by: Epyon

There is so little to say about this. It's town music.

...

god what do you even want from me

Okay so. There's nothing wrong with it, really. It's just not very interesting and it can't get a pass for merely being competent. But then occasionally it does a thing I like so it does get a pass for being slightly above competent, I guess? I don't know. It's town music. what do you even want from me.

82. Final Fantasy X - Servants of the Mountain
Nominated by: KirinATW

So I'm a huge fan of FFX's soundtrack, but I've really never understood the love for this track in particular. Yeah, it's pretty good. Okay. But FFX has a lot of good music and most of it is way better than People of the North Pole (which is, for whatever it's worth, the only thing I've heard this track called until now). I like the first minute or so, but after that it shoots itself in the foot in the worst possible way -- by becoming incredibly uninteresting. I don't bust out the boring complaint very often, but it's definitely applicable to that part of Servants of the Mountain.

Anyway, moral of the story is, listen to Someday the Dream Will End instead.

81. Shadow Hearts: From The New World - Great Ghost Dance (With Icaro)
Nominated by: electricpiper

I'm really not sure what to think of Great Ghost Dance. It's really hard for me to rank. Parts of it are extremely interesting; I especially like opening and the vocals and the bowed string instrument, but then it's also incoherent and a lot of the cooler elements get drowned out by the less cool ones. And then it ends and it feels like it's only about half over. I'll just say that it's cool but has some wasted potential and move on.

80. We Love Katamari - Blue Orb
Nominated by: Ed Bellis

Blue Orb was possibly the single hardest nomination of all 100 of them for me to rank. Even after several listens I still haven't figured it out, and worse I don't feel like I'm any closer to figuring it out. What I can say about it is that it's completely unique, completely unlike anything else I've ever heard. That said, it's not... entirely successful. I feel like it never really goes anywhere and, as a result, is very repetitive. All I really want is one higher energy section somewhere in the middle and I feel like this could jump up 30 or more places.

79. Star Ocean 4 - Sacrificial Lamb
Nominated by: electricpiper

Sacrificial Lamb is weird. I feel like I should have a lot to say about it, but... not really. First part is completely uninteresting, the strings are cool, and then the vocals are really ehhhhhh. If it was longer it might've been able to go somewhere cool, but... then again, maybe not.

78. Jet Force Gemini - Sekhmet
Nominated by: todbot

I have... less than nothing to say about Sekhmet. I enjoy N64 music just in general; the N64's... soundchip or whatever the correct terminology is... is probably my favorite of every console with a recognizable soundchip. That said, Sekhmet is unremarkable. It's got a few cool sections (the last minute or so is interesting, for example) but overall the best thing I can say about it is that it does nothing to make me dislike it.

77. Katawa Shoujo - Parity
Nominated by: Phase

So, the good news for you is that Katawa Shoujo is one of my favorite games and I absolutely adore its soundtrack. The bad news is, and this is a rather controversial opinion, I rate Parity... quite low among the game's music. I think it's bottom 10 for me, in fact. Even among just character themes I'd take Generic Happy Music, Painful History, Ah Eh I Oh You, The Student Council, Concord, and Standing Tall over it. >_>;

I'm not even really sure why I don't like it very much. It's bouncy and playful and those aren't qualities I usually in enjoy in music, so that's part of it, but it also has some really cool parts, like 1:23 through 1:39. So it really just balances out around neutral for me.

76. Gradius III - Sandstorm
Nominated by: Ace_Killjoy

Sandstorm's... neat. That's the best word I can use for it, I think. It really only has one trick and what you hear is what you get, but that one trick is okay with me. It's one of those tracks I enjoy listening to while it's playing and then never think about again.

75. Super Mario 3D Land - Ghost House
Nominated by: Epyon

SM3DL is a fantastic game. That doesn't affect the ranking, I just wanted to say it because it's true.

Ghost House is like a lot of Mario music from the non-Galaxy platformers, in that it's entirely serviceable in-game but there's really not much reason to listen to it outside of the game. It sounds... nice, but at the end of the day it's not very compelling. I will say that I like it more than a lot of Mario platformer music that I'd level the same complaint against. Like, it beats Athletic, for instance.

74. Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru 8 - lixaxil
Nominated by: SuperAngelo

Umineko music is really hit and miss for me. This is at least better than like Mortal Stampede, but Life it is not. It has kind of an interesting beat but I feel like that's all it has going for it, and that can't carry the piece, at least out of context. Also, this could be just me, but it sounds really... grainy or something, and that hurts it a bit too.

73. Mega Man X3 - Gravity Beetle
Nominated by: Epyon

As Epyon is possibly aware, I'm not a big fan of MMX music! In fact I generally dislike it outright! But this is completely inoffensive. It's not great, but it's not the complete cluster**** I like to characterize MMX music as usually being. I do wish it did a little more, though, because it's very one note.

72. God of War 3 - Pandora's Song
Nominated by: electricpiper

I have never understood what people like so much about Pandora's Song, though I do like it... I guess... It's really just sort of... there... for me. It doesn't do anything to make me dislike it, but it also never pops. It's just... there. And now it's here. And we are moving on.

71. Mischief Makers - Trouble Maker
Nominated by: Mega Mana

Man, I have no idea whether this is awesome or terrible, catchy or annoying. It's interesting and fairly memorable at least. I don't think at any point I'm going to be like, "oh man I have to listen to Trouble Maker again", but I have no problems with listening to it right now.

71. Blazing Angels – Main Theme

Rating: 5/10

I seem to be going out in increments of 15.

Personally, I wish it was longer. But then the motives and sequences would get repetitive. Oh well. Better to have too little than too much, in this case.
