It's weird to think how much more important SD was in those first couple years. It was really on par with Raw for the most part in focus.

The last time a pure SD match main evented a PPV was Kane vs. Taker at Hell in a Cell 2010.

I wonder if any SD match will ever actually main event a PPV ever again.

So basically bring in people who represent NXT from other brands.

I think it's fair to ask how many of those main events since Kane vs Taker HiaC 2010 have been John Cena matches, because I think Cena being on Raw contributes pretty heavily to the lopsidedness in main events.

Also how many of the main events were brandless matches a la the Royal Rumble.

Thats pretty demonstrably not true,. Because last year you could've said the same for Orton,

Let's do this. Going backwards from Wrestlemania, let's look at the main events of each PPV. (Note that the next one likely has Cena headlining, as well, unless they decide it's foolish to have CM Punk not headline in front of a Chicago crowd.)

John Cena vs The Rock
John Cena vs Kane
Royal Rumble
CM Punk vs Alberto Del Rio vs The Miz
John Cena & The Rock vs Awesome Truth
John Cena vs Alberto Del Rio
John Cena vs Alberto Del Rio vs CM Punk
Triple H vs CM Punk
John Cena vs CM Punk (though technically Alberto Del Rio's cash-in was the last "official match" of the evening)
John Cena vs CM Punk
John Cena vs R-Truth
John Cena vs The Miz
John Cena vs The Miz vs John Morrison
John Cena vs The Miz
John Cena vs CM Punk vs John Morrison vs Sheamus vs Randy Orton vs R-Truth
Royal Rumble
John Cena vs Wade Barrett
Randy Orton vs Wade Barrett (featuring John Cena as Special Guest Refereeing)
Randy Orton vs Wade Barrett (w/ John Cena)

And then the Kane vs Undertaker match which was SmackDown's last main event.

So of the 17 non-Royal Rumble Main Events (one of which featured Cena anyway, but was not a "Raw" main event since it's cross-promotional) since SmackDown's last main event, John Cena has been heavily involved in 15 of them, and a legal competitor in 13 of them.

So yes, John Cena being on Raw is definitely a major reason for SmackDown not getting Main Events at PPVs.

Also for fun, number of appearances as a competitor in the main event of a PPV since SmackDown's last PPV Main Event. (Not counting Royal Rumbles because then the list is littered with one-hit-wonders, and also not counting ten second cash ins as matches)

John Cena: 13
CM Punk: 6
The Miz: 5
Alberto Del Rio: 3
R-Truth: 3
Randy Orton: 3
Wade Barrett: 3
John Morrison: 2
The Rock: 2
Kane: 1
Sheamus: 1
Triple H: 1

Shout-outs to R-Truth, who somehow finished in a tie for fourth and managed as many appearances as Randy Orton.

Also fun to note that CM Punk is the only constant in the two matches not involving Cena.

As bad as the perception seems to be about the WWE's confidence in him, and for all the talk about them relegating him to curtain jerker/midcard worker, he has it a hell of a lot better than anyone not named John Cena when it comes to main eventing PPVs, at least.

Thats also not my point.

Cenas on Raw because they want him to main event.

If they felt comfortable moving him to smackdown, itd be because they were comfortable with someone else doing it.

It's kind of a "chicken or the egg" sort of thing.

Does Raw get the main events because of Cena, or does Cena get the main events by virtue of being the most consistent top guy on Raw?

(Also which one of those was cross-promotional? Cena vs. Kane? I lost track of which show Kane is "on.")
EDIT: Oh wait, you meant the 2011 Rumble

It's probably both, but more the Raw part. Smackdown doesn't get nearly as many viewers, so it makes sense to make the Raw side have the main event. But if Cena were on Smackdown or out injured or something they'd probably throw the occasional Smackdown main event in just because, so his presence probably contributes a little.

So if the dirtsheets are to be believed, WWE signed Brock for 35 appearances over a year.

Counting 52 Raws + 12 PPVs, that's a potential 64 shows he COULD appear on.

Tonight will be appearance #3, and the PPV Sunday will be #4.

How do you think they will budget these moving forward? Skip 5 PPV cycles completely and just be "full time" for the other 7? Skip 2 (occasionally 3) Raws per month but wrestle on almost every PPV?

It's an interesting dilemma, especially since you know there's NO WAY that they already have this all planned out ahead of time.

Hopefully they don't run into a TNA/RVD situation.

How they will I have no idea, but how they "should" is probably to skip a decent length of time in the middle, so you have him wrap up something at, I don't know, Summerslam, plant the seeds for an eventual Wrestlemania match and then have him return prior to the Rumble to build up to WM29. Avoid having him start to feel too routine, while getting a decent mini-return boost when he shows up again.

Well I don't think he really has that much of a choice. If he's signed for 35 dates and WWE wants to burn them all on 10 consecutive weeks of house shows, that's their prerogative. He could then just sit on his ass for 8 months and collect a paycheck for doing nothing.

FCW - December 11, 2011

So we got Byron Saxton and Chris Russo again. This Russo guy looks like the biggest douche. Just check it out:

external image

He's the bewildered looking schmuck on the right and that's literally the only pic I could find of him. Oh hey, Eden Stiles got fired around this point, so now Caylee Turner (AKA Alicia Fox's sister from Tough Enough) is doing ring announcing.

Anyway, we start off our show with Damien Sandow (c) vs Dean Ambrose for the 15 Championship! God, Damien Sandow is such a gentleman. The FCW crowd is actually cheering for Ambrose. lol Haha, there was a funny spot at the start where Sandow gets to the rope while Ambrose has him in a hammerlock and starts shouting "Rope!" periodically until Ambrose lets go. So Ambrose lets go, looks demented for a moment while holding his fist in front of him like he is going to slug Sandow, then he walks away. Oh my god. Sandow is in an arm wrench, so he punches Ambrose in the face, then he locks in an arm wrench of his own before letting out the most regal laugh I've ever heard. And then Ambrose punches him in the face.

Byron: Now you're thinking.
Chris: I'm always thinking.
Byron: Could've fooled me.

Damien Sandow gets his first pinfall after his snap spinning neckbreaker, but only after throwing Ambrose into every metal object ringside. 1-0 at the 8 minute mark. Damien Sandow is literally the best in FCW now. I don't care what anybody says. His offense is just so unique. Ambrose does the same thing to Sandow on the outside before trying to lock the Regal Stretch on the inside. Sandow crawls to the ropes in an epic manner-- but he does everything in an awesome way! Sandow takes off the top turnbuckle pad with one minute left and goes to smash Ambrose's head off of it, only to waste time. Then Ambrose turns it around and goes to smash Sandow's head off it... then stops. ...And then he brings him back further to get a better running start and smashes it. 2-0 for Sandow at the 30 second mark. And then a second time. lol 3-0 with 3 seconds left. Damien Sandow retains his championship and looks damn good doing it! So Ambrose keeps smashing his head off of it and sells it in such a hilarious manner. Then Ambrose grabs the 15 Championship, puts it around Damien Sandow's neck, and then locks him in the Regal Stretch. Sandow is basically unconscious before it's even locked in.

Next up is a Diva's Match with Naomi vs Audrey Marie! God, Audrey is so hot. Naomi looks ridiculous in some sort of lizard skin pattern spandex. Oh, Naomi isn't obnoxious any longer btw. She's a normal chick again.

Byron: What? Is she going to a ho-down after this match?
Chris: Oh come on, Audrey is from the Texas area.
Byron: So? I'm from the DC area and you don't see me coming out in a military outfit.

lol Audrey Marie is very distinctly cowgirl-ish. ...Yeah, this match is bad. A lot of blown spots from both girls.

Byron: I respect the fact that Audrey Marie has come such a long way in such a short time but... the ego, man. The ego. The ego is just out of control!
Chris: What ego!?
Byron: Would you believe that I walked past her today in the hallway and that she didn't even care to ask me how my day was?

Anyway, the finish comes after a series of bad pinfall attempts by both girls. Naomi goes for a suplex, but Audrey counters it on the way down with her Eye of the Hurricane move which I can't remember the name of. Well, it was better than an Aksana match, at least.

Next up is Leakee vs Antonio Cesaro. Oh boy, let's hope it's just a squash match!

Chris: Antonio Cesaro is very... pompous.
Byron: What? Because he thinks he's a role model for a majority of Americans who strive to be him?
Chris: But how does he know? He's not an American.
Byron: But he's been here long enough to see the failures of our country.

Chris: It's just that all this talk about how America is bad, America is awful, America this, America that.
Byron: I do not recall him ever saying America is awful.
Chris: He said... he said he was happy to have been born in this stinky place called America!
Byron: Where did you hear the word awful?
Chris: Stinky is not a-
Byron: Misquoting. You're misquoting the man. I'm going to tell him you said that.

Short match. Leakee misses a second rope crossbody, so Antonio rolls him up and holds the tights for the win.

Main event is up next, with Richie Steamboat vs Seth Rollins. Hey, it's been a while since this happened! This match is really good. Richie even busted out JTG's finisher again! Richie also works on the leg a lot. Then Husky Harris comes by and beats up the security and enters the building. Husky comes into the ring and starts beating the s*** out of Richie. Now, I guess, the FCW lockerroom comes by to egg them on and let them fight. ...When one and a half months ago, they were trying to break them up. Well, alright then!

Highlight:

Damien Sandow vs Dean Ambrose in a 15 Minute Ironman Match -

Yup, one highlight. Not a terrific show. Damien Sandow and Dean Ambrose had a great 15 Championship match that deserves attention!
