Edgeworth's updated one is the worst

Also, am I remembering it wrong or was Godot's changed for the Trilogy release? It sounds off to me.

Question: Does anyone remember if Phoenix makes any appearance in 5-2 at all? Like via phone call or anything? I'm replaying 6-4 right now and I'm wondering if it's the only case in the entire series without Phoenix OR Edgeworth in it.

Phoenix shows up before the first trial day in the suit without the attorney's badge, and Apollo comments that he doesn't look like a hobo anymore (and they do a quick 3-D-ification of Hobonix just because they can).

He also shows up on investigation day 2, and he talks about 5-2's similarity to 2-2, including an indirect reference to Franziska. That was the moment I knew the series was going to be okay again.

Anyway, I got through the Vigilantes testimonies, and they weren't as bad as I remembered! They were overly long since they're nine statements apiece, but they're thankfully not convoluted or hard to navigate. It's chaotic, but it never gets out of control at the same time. I enjoyed the moment where all nine of them object at the same time. Also, Maya continues to be great by getting Number Nine's name without missing a beat. She also confirms Phoenix/Iris by outright saying she and Phoenix are not a couple! Huzzah!

L-4 is unique in that there are out-of-trial sequences in the middle of the trial, the first of which here is solving the puzzle in the bell tower with the two pendants. The game made it a little too obvious that Espella had the other pendant while trying to sell you that it's a dramatic moment where you need to come up with something to save the day. Like, she holds up her arm with the pendant on it and the camera stays on it for a good five seconds, so it's not even a matter of paying close attention.

Chapter 8 finished, which means we're only halfway through L-4! They split the trial up over two chapters here because you're technically controlling Layton for the last chapter, I guess! We also have a playable Layton segment in the middle of the trial as they climb up and investigate the Storyteller's Tower, which is a really cool location. They find a photo of Espella as a child with a girl who is quite clearly Darklaw, but nobody bothers pointing it out for some reason. At the top of the tower, we discover that the Storyteller is unsurprisingly still alive, and we get a cool cutscene followed by a puzzle of Layton fighting a bunch of suits of armor brought to life by the Storyteller writing them into existence, or so it seems. The image of chibi Layton slicing through those armored suits in the puzzle is so great.

Afterward, we find out that the Storyteller has lost control of his own Story and is completely unaware that Espella is the one on trial. After all, it was supposed to be Kira, whom Phoenix and Maya found up in the belfry after solving the puzzle there. Layton tells him he intends to go back and take his place in the courtroom, but not as a defender, since that spot is already filled. Since it will be his job to expose the truth, there's only one place he can stand. Then he invites the Storyteller to come watch it all unfold as the chapter ends.

It's weird playing through this case with info that Phoenix doesn't already possess himself because of the Layton segment, particularly about Darklaw. Yet he's able to get to the point where he can accuse her of being involved with the crime through a lot of connecting the dots on circumstantial evidence. It's pretty impressive.

Well, if you haven't figured out it's Darklaw by the time you get to the Eldwitch Woods, you're probably not paying much attention! Actually, as I've played through this game, I've been very impressed at how great of a lawyer Phoenix is here. I suppose it makes sense since this would have to be post-T&T when he's at the peak of his power and "as good as any lawyer could hope to be," but yeah, he's in top form here in terms of skill.

Still working my way through Chapter 9. Finally got Darklaw onto the stand and Layton to step up as the eponymous Last Inquisitor. Interestingly, in that cutscene where he shows up, Maya isn't wearing her disguise and Luke is standing beside Layton, both of which should not be the case! But yeah, Darklaw's a great character, and she really makes you work for it. I forgot about Kira eventually getting so frustrated by Darklaw's lying that she just outs her as the Great Witch of the Eldwitch Woods. That was a pretty great moment.

Chapter 9 complete! Darklaw becomes much more free with her information once it comes out that she's the Great Witch of the Eldwitch Woods. Eventually, she reveals that she's been bent on betraying the Storyteller and setting up Espella as Bezella, who is more than a witch. She doesn't give away her motives just yet though.

I think the judge is really good here because his reactions really help convey how mind blowing all this must be to the average Labyrinthian: Magic doesn't exist. None of the witches died. The Shades did it all. It's one crazy thing after another, and the judge sells it really well.

The Storyteller's testimony is strange. It feels so out of place after everything you've seen so far, and there isn't really anything for anyone to do but ask a bunch of questions. I do like the Labrelum/Umbrella pun though, and Maya's "Look where that Shade's hand is!" joke when they show the image of the Shades making the gold Layton statue. Now how she saw that image, who knows!

Anyway, apparently Capcom is doing some DGS1 recaps to get ready for the release of DGS2. There aren't any real spoilers in this video, but the first couple of minutes is a complete reenactment of the 2-1 intro (with voice acting), so that might be worth watching for those of you who haven't experienced DGS yet!

Aaaaaand we're finally finished! Ten total testimonies: One with Espella (and Eve, I guess), two with all the Vigilantes, two with Kira, two with Kira and Darklaw, one with the Storyteller, one with the Storyteller and Espella, and one with the Storyteller, Espella, and Darklaw. The final piece of evidence is the mechanism for ringing the bell to show that Darklaw had to be the one who rang it, not Espella. The last stretch is rather awkward and we'd have been better served with the defiant Espella from the trailer than the "woe is me" Espella we ultimately got. The revelation that Darklaw was Belduke's daughter and it was his suicide that spurred her revenge plot into action was a bit poignant, but other than that, it's a hot mess.

Hey, I called the epilogue chapter being the longest.

L-4 really is just stupid long. It's so dragged out for what it is that it's just kind of incredible.

Now that this endeavor is finally over, I'm not really sure what to do now. I guess we could let this topic die now, or I could start playing the Layton games again and keep track of it here. I've got a joint topic with Jeff Zero that I could use instead though. I dunno.

much longer if we count Layton/AA...!

but yeah I didn't bother counting time for that game because it's a little hard to keep track here since there are many instances where everyone is together during investigations and I didn't feel like trying to break it down into increments between four characters
