I still want to play that game, but I'm worried by the time it ends up on consoles the zeitgeist will be over

the game is selling a million every 2-3 weeks. you have years until this game fades away

Yeah the game's definitely not going anywhere, and I don't dislike it or anything, I would just like to be able to hear people talk about other games they've been playing again

Here's the new project from Derek Yu, plus his co-creators from Spelunky and Eternal Daughter, the developer of Downwell, and a fifth guy I'm unfamiliar with:

Looks like it's right up my alley.

Well, I dove in... Just finished X-15. There's at least one crazy level per episode, but I've been managing.

so I watched the Slime Rancher QL. it made me restart Slime Rancher. then the kids came in, watched, and wanted to play Slime Rancher. then I redeemed an XBL card so I could download Slime Rancher for free (and they would leave me alone so I can collect all these plorts).

just over 50 hours now on nioh. the combat really is the only thing carrying it. i don't care about the story or the characters. william is a nothing protagonist. the levels all look generic af, and going through some of them again for sub missions points to uninspired design. i'm pretty sure i've seen every enemy type already 15 hours ago. the loot lust is starting to wear out too.

but man is it still just super satisfying to fight dudes and mind mapping a level the first time through a mission. it kinda sorta feels like destiny in a weird way, but with way more content to go through. probably too much, actually.

i do think i'm very close to the end of the game. should be done with the main campaign by the weekend. i also have the two dlc. hoping it has completely new environments and enemies!

but i might just take a break from it tomorrow to get through hellblade, which seems to offer a completely opposite experience with a great narrative but very rote action. perfect palate cleanser!

love too mobile game

yep nioh is too long without anything compelling happening. just gonna push through it since i know i'm close to the end.

hellblade though!

shit is intense. headphones are a must. i'm also finding the combat weirdly satisfying after fumbling through it in the beginning. this game has zero tutorials and button prompts so i was discovering different combos and abilities on the fly.

Played a bunch of Pyre this morning. I think I'm just before the first Liberation Rite?

Game is decent, I like the characters and world a lot. I'm so-so on the actual sport right now. Right now the strategy just seems to be use fast units to rush the goal. Slow units like Jodi seems wholly useless, but maybe things change farther in.

Finished Pyre. Overall, very cool game. Might be my favorite Supergiant game, actually. Longer than I thought it would be, not in a bad way but I don't see myself replaying this soon if ever unlike with Bastion. My favorite characters were probably Volfred, Jodariel and Oralech.

don't get me wrong, i actually love a decent amount of it! it's just too long without any intrigue in the narrative or surprises in the mechanics. i kinda wish the cutscenes were just wilder so that i'd be more interested in what's going on because it's all just so very dry without even a sense of humor. and the levels don't really have much character to them. the soulsborne games, while not having many cinematics, still kept me wanting to dive into the world because of the mood and atmosphere and mystery. nioh does control better though, so it has that going for it!

i beat hellblade. is is harrowing and uplifting. i think it's easy for me to empathize that even if i don't really deal with major mental health issues, i found myself almost welling up near the end.

now it's actually a three-way race for my goty between that, nier, and pyre!

i'd be interested to actually read what it is about nioh's narrative that you love! you can get into spoilers if it'll help. i'm at that point where i don't mind being told plot points in advance. hell, maybe that'll help me appreciate the story.

because right now, comparing the strength of nier's writing to nioh's just sounds ludicrous!

Hellblade is a game I'm less interested in the more I hear about or watch it.

Pillars of the Earth as a German adventure game though? That's my jam. Saw some reviews and assumed it was out today; it's tomorrow! Oh well. Maybe I'll read a plot summary of the book to remind myself what happens. It's been like 12 years since I read it.

what about the buzz around hellblade is turning you off? the subject? the presentation? the tone? the mechanics? the people hyping it up?

the game looks genuinely not fun from a gameplay perspective. the puzzles, the combat, the simple act of walking forward. which, fine, whatever, I've liked games more for less, and have even found meaning in lethargy. but what that leaves the game with is its presentation of mental illness, and it looks uneven.

I feel like games people, particularly games people with AAA background who now find themselves with a little bit of freedom thanks to past success or current indie direction, have it in their mind that video games are Important, and in order to prove that games are Important they need to be able to present Big Ideas. and that's okay. I'm not arguing that games shouldn't tackle big societal problems. it's just that sometimes it's a poor fit; sometimes the structure of the game interrupts the presentation of an idea, and things go wrong. sometimes the history of racism and power dynamics gets hand-waved away because a shooter needs another fetch quest. sometimes suicide gets reduced to whether a third party said the right thing. sometimes physical disability is portrayed as a punishment. in the case of Hellblade, it looks like a story about "mental illness" is gamified in such a way that it only really portrays schizophrenia, paranoid type. Hellblade might be a very accurate portrayal of schizophrenia, paranoid type, but if it's only about that one specific DSM (with its own history of negative portrayals in literature), does it really add much to the conversation? what's the intent? is it even helpful?

the problem with Big Ideas is that often the people most excited about portraying them aren't interested in the mundanity. and boy, does mental illness live in the mundanity; the day-to-day; the small interactions with the world at large.

i think it's an important thing for people to understand, and it is conveyed well, and it creates an interesting narrative, same as any good story. the point isn't to be helpful, the point is to create an enjoyable narrative around such a thing, and they happened to do the legwork and treat this thing with respect. i have more than my share of mental illness and am happy with the way it is presented. just like i enjoy the few recent games that deal with anxiety, as that's my primary issue.

the game doesn't exist to be a vehicle for their Big Idea, it exists to be a good game with a narrative tool that is also very sensitive and not often portrayed. i think ascribing the "Big Idea" thing to it is giving pundits too much power without making your own decisions imo. it sounds like you're less concerned with what the game actually delivers and more on what people are saying, and whether or not they are saying the right -- or interesting or important -- things

it just comes down to how much the idea appeals. I haven't played yet but I think it looks pretty interesting despite the paper thin gameplay. there's been a lot of those over the years that appeal, be it Limbo or Brothers or whatever.
