Speaking of anime music, one more thing. There's this website that has a lot of OP/EDs. You can put in your myanimelist and it'll show what's available. You can make it play songs randomly or make your own playlist. Only thing shitty about the website is that its bandwidth is ass more often times than not.

especially because their editors meddle with direction also.

Everything about people like executives makes me dislike people in "higher" positions more and more. Negima would have been such an awesome anime if they didn't try to force the author to mimic Love Hina and the fact he started it how they wanted then changed it into Shounen makes me like it even more!

The manga is just infinite times better than the anime!

Panty and Stocking's soundtrack is incredibly cool, and a mainstay in my collection.

definitely agree with you on that, the multiple albums they released were great and I always come back to them.

some of my other favourite anime soundtracks; at least the few I can think right now are:

Ninja Scroll 2004 have been listening to it for years and it never gets old, good balance between aggressive and calm.

FLCL- The Pillows did a fantastic job providing the themes and bgm for it.

movie wise all I can think of right now is how much I like Susumu Hirasawa's work with Satoshi Kon on Paprika and Paranoia Agent.

I was actually talking about the original anime (I somehow left out the word "original" in my post). Brotherhood's music is definitely great, but I think FMA '03 shits on it.

I mean, Brothers..

And forgot FLCL, somehow.

The shounen genre is hit-or-miss for me. Love DBZ, hate Naruto, hate how Bleach crashed and burned in slow motion, still picking at HXH, can only handle so much One Piece at a time, etc.

I am not a big fan of the Fairy Tail anime, but the manga is one of my favorites (see: our previous discussion here about that massive Humble Bundle of FT manga). I feel that the anime does not do a good job of capturing the "look" of the manga, if that makes any sense. Mashima has a very distinctive style, and the generic look that A-1 Pictures gives to (almost) everything it does is not good for that style (... IMO).

And I agree: The Berserk manga is a masterpiece, and everybody who is a fan of anime / manga at all owes it to themselves to at least attempt to read it and see what the medium is capable of doing at its limits.

No thoughts to share on anime music. I still tap my foot to stuff I heard back in the '90s, but nothing recent moves me like that. I think the early '00s marked a high point, judging from my OST collection (see: .hack//SIGN and Rahxephon, among others).

So I read one chapter of Promised Neverland months ago, and I thought it was alright. The premise was slow to build and it didn't sell very well to me, which is unfair to a series because premise is towards the bottom of the list in what makes something good.

I've read to chapter 24 now, and it is quite good. The plot is slow, but that never matters if there's something of substance filling the gap. Here, it's with proper game theory intrigue, which is exceptional and seems to be the core appeal of the series.

I haven't seen Death Note or No Game No Life, which I've heard is mostly about game theory? So personally, I haven't seen anything of this sort. I thought this season's anime Kakegurui was going to be about game theory, but It's not and I think it has some loose similarities to Jojo (in-universe logical, cool absurdity)..

My vocabulary has probably gotten up to about 500-700 words in japanese just from paying attention to anime but I can't read a thing. I too have tried on a few occasions so I could play some untranslated games but its just such a tedious language to learn. The kana are fine but the lack of spaces and kanji can go fuck themselves.

Every now and then I notice I understand a few lines in an anime while I'm looking away but thats about as far as it goes. Just another 200 or so years of watching tons of anime and I'll have this language down (and sound like a weirdo because anime characters don't talk normally for the most part)!

I'm not even actively trying to learn japanese now. I'm sure I'll end up wanting to again eventually. If writtern japanese just had spaces between words I really wouldn't mind. Not having them creates such an immense barrier to practice. Just going in with a few basic kanji means nothing because they are often used paired with multiple kanji to create an entirely new kanji so you could be entirely misreading the whole thing.

I think I had down about 100 kanji in my last attempt but trying to read anything from a game was still completely impossible. Kanji are also a massive pain in the ass to search for since they have no pronunciation rules so you end up having to search up the radicals if you happen to know them or just describe them and hope google has your back if you don't.

Ugh, spoken japanese sounds nice but everything about how its written is ass.

I know a fair bit of spoken language just from decades of anime and music. Not close to conversational level though, and the only character I know is "no."

I frequently consider learning the language, but I know how it's always frowned upon when people only want to learn Japanese just for anime/manga/games. But then I also think, who gives a crap what other people think, and if I want to learn Japanese, I'll do it.

Yeah, the lack of spaces are a pain... What I did is, play Pokemon & Zelda in Japanese with my JED Japanese dictionary app open on my tablet. That way I could look up words I don't know immediately. Also, Pokemon emerald on GBA doesn't use Kanji & they put spaces between the words (So that little kids can play it) so its a really good way to familiarize yourself with Hiragana & Katakana & increase your vocabulary.

If I can just memorize the Katakana "Alphabet" I could already read a majority of Japanese, since Katakana is just English words written like a Japanese word. It should only take a week or 2 to memorize em but my ADHD ass always gets distracted... Im pretty determined this time though, there's just far to many great Japanese only games out there to pass up.

I also watch the YouTube channel "Japanese from ZERO".

Katakana is not exclusively for loanwords. Learning kids stuff where they write everything in kana (which is katakana and hiragana and technically furigana i think) actually isn't very helpful cause most of those words will never be in kana. Theres a lot of websites with good kana flashcard type stuff that makes it fairly easy to learn in a couple days. Finding something that does have furigana is probably best as it just puts the kana above the kanji so you at least know how to pronounce it but you still have no idea what it means or whether those 5 kanji in a row are 1 word or 3 or 5 or half of a single word that the proceeding kana finishes.

If they did everything like pokemon without kanji and with spaces I'd probably have learned it by now as I've at least memorized all the kana and gotten my reading speed of them up pretty fast on a few different occasions. They really just should abolish kanji and use spaces. The average person needs to know 5000! kanji to be fluent. That's dumb. I wonder if I could find the site I was using to learn kanji, it seemed pretty good.

I also managed to get an Image to text capture hooked into a text hooker so I could play stuff on emulators you can't hook to and still have it feed into the text hooker through the image to text thing but I forgot how I managed that. It was also really tedious.

I wonder how they teach Japanese to actual Japanese children in Japan? I am trying to memorize the Katakana & Hiragana by just writing them over & over on my tablets drawing app using my stylus. I also have a paper chart I made.

Even if I never learn Kanji (though I really should) or only learn basic Kanji, I can still understand a bit of the basics things you would see in a game, I should be able to navigate menus at the very least.

But I hate when they don't put spaces between a word & the particle that follows. For example, Watashi (わたし) means "I" but if I didnt know that & read "わたしの" I would think that was 1 word. That makes it hard to look up new words I find. It can get quite confusing...

Yeah japanese text hilariously loads in the text box but not in the post for gamefaqs. And I mean, I think it will be harder than you might think. Okurigana+no spaces basically make it a nightmare. So much is written in kanji. It's not like there are some 100-200 basic kanji, there are like 3000! However its not as bad as it at first appears because kanji have radicals and radicals have a fixed meaning so once you learn those (of which there are like 200) it will help you decipher kanji a bit or at least make remembering them much easier.

Then each kanji has an on and kun reading that usually depends on where in a word that kanji is but not always and then some words just say fuck how the kanji are pronounced, this word isn't pronounced like anything that makes it up. In spoken dialogue many also have different inflections that are important. It's kind of hellish. THEN you have to get used to the fact that even after translating the text to english, japanese culture is just different than american culture so even translated they will be saying different stuff. Everything is incredibly indirect and roundabout in japanese compared to the fairly direct and straightfoward english but this isn't a result of the language but rather the culture. You might have seen some anime translate something like "do you like me?" "well if I had to say between whether I like you or hate you.....I don't hate you". A lot of their speech is indirect like that.

It's honestly amazing we can appreciate anime as much as we can given that the language has a different structure, alphabet, conjugations, culture, attitude, and style but I guess thats just part of its charm. Except the alphabet (well technically they have a syllabary and whatever the hell kanji counts as).

Another thing that always tricks me is how the sentence structure is different. For example, in English I could say "I am [Blank]" but in Japanese it would be "[Blank] desu". They seem to pull this Yoda speech with everything. Its not that bad, but still something one needs to get used to, if your a English speaker it definitely throws you off.

Well technically it would be watashi wa blank desu but if no topic or subject is specified then I is default for statements and you for questions, sorta the same as english. Like in english you could say "want to go to the store?" when really the full sentence is "do you want to go to the store?" but since its a question, you is the implied subject. In english if someone were to say "ugh,....so sleepy" since its a statement I is implied to make it "ugh, im so sleepy.". Japanese works the same way.

In this way japanese is the same as english there. I is in the same place, just omitted in the japanese version because its implied and they like to omit as much as possible. Of course if the sentence gets more complex than that, then yeah the structure is quite different. Of course, if you watch anime at least, a lot of times they would omit the desu as well. You have probably heard plenty of "Urusai!" which technically just means noisy or loud but they use it to imply that that person is noisy or even less directly just that suddenly its noisy (ignoring that the noise is coming from a person, kinda like when a kid is ignoring another kid in english and being like "wow its loud in here all of a sudden, wonder why that is" when the other person is of course just talking in general), all but noisy being omitted because it's implied. Because of this its usually translated as something like "shut up" since thats how they are using it. More example of indirectness.

You may have also heard an exchange of "daijoubu?" "daijoubu" which omits everything except that word. Daijobu just means ok (in terms of the condition like "its ok" or "things are ok here"). You could probably write out whats being implied as "anata wa daijoubu desu ka?" "Watashi wa daijoubu desu". In english its are you ok? I'm ok. Or the shortened version "ok?" "ok". Of course in english the second one is weird as a sentence and the exchange would probably go "you ok?" "yeah". So really both languages omit a ton that you probably never bother to think about until you learn a new language and have to deal with the fact that they omit different things.

Course, as my vocabulary improves I realize sentence structure often isn't that important. Although it would sound dumb just saying "store, I, going, to there" its still pretty easy to understand in english. If your vocabulary is big enough to understand all the words in a line of dialogue in anime the order doesn't really matter so much.

I studied Japanese culture, geography, etc. for four semesters at university (... fifteen years ago) because I had elective spots to fill, but my study of the language has been entirely on my own. (To be fair, I already have a language degree, so that gives me a leg up on linguistics, how to study, and so on.) I know enough to manage in the average Super Robot Wars game, and I keep a stack of reference books (including the obligatory kanji dictionary) on hand if I need to puzzle through more complicated stuff, but I am by no means fluent.

Alternating between Fire Emblem Echoes and Persona 1 PSP again. I have no idea how people play Echoes on the Classic setting, since there are maps that are designed to kill off the bulk of your troops on the way to the boss. And P1 is still evil on the Easy difficulty. Random encounters can still wipe your party, and the dungeons are huge. How I used to do it back on the PS1 in the day is beyond me. Normal difficulty would be murder, and I have no idea why Hard is even included.

Persona 3 can be unforgiving (e.g. instant kills on your main character are automatic Game Over). The vanilla version (PS2) does not have the Easy level, IIRC, but P3P (PSP) was designed to be more user-friendly, anyway.
