For the record I'm pretty close to the furthest thing from a pickup artist you can be while still being socially functional.

I'm just a normal guy who is capable of talking to women, realizes that asking or being asked for a number is not a big deal unless you make it one, and who realizes the reality of the situation of meeting someone in an airport.

Like I'm not even really trying to be insulting when I say "this says more about you"-- this is legitimately what I think. If your vision of a guy asking a girl for her number is one that is creepy by default, then like, you probably either haven't ever done it or you've done it in such an awkward way that of course it'd be creepy. It's just not a big deal.

Lopen, are you saying that you would be completely cool with walking up to a woman you've never met, having her turn towards you, and the first thing you say is "give me your number"?

Imagine being so bad at interacting with women that you think that simply asking them for their number is some massive burden you're placing on them.

imagine being so dense that you leave out context in order to make your point

there's a difference between this and chatting her up in a social situation and asking for the number. i'm starting to think you're leaving this crucial detail out just to bolster your own point. i haven't read all the posts in this thread, so i can't comment on if anyone is literally saying this, but the gist of what i'm getting from reading the thread is that it was done while he was at work, which is what made it inappropriate

How do you equate asking for someone's number to sexual harassment

I'm not. I'm saying they both contribute to an unfortunate reality of constantly receiving unwanted advances. This is similar to how minorities deal with a ton of implicit bias in addition to whatever overt racism they encounter. Those two things are not the same (and are not morally equivalent), but they both are real contributions to the problem that need to be addressed.

The best job I ever had was the one where I interacted with other college students daily, and man oh man did I hit on plenty a lady.

For her to have this reaction, my gut tells me that either she's just a lame person or the TSA agent in question was super creepy and repulsive looking. If a normal dude steps up to the plate and politely strikes out, the girl walks away with an ego boost and nothing else is said of it.

It isn't just people asking for girls' numbers. It's also creepy comments, catcalls, other sexual harassment, etc. This is definitely on the less bad end of that spectrum (and I'm not saying that the TSA agent is automatically a terrible person for doing it), but it all contributes to same problem to varying degrees.

Catcalls are wrong, sexual harassment is wrong, actual creepy comments are not acceptable.

I am talking about asking for a girl's number when you think she's attractive, which is what happened to Brie Larson, not accompanied by any of those other things that are wrong. It is unprofessional to do if you're on the job (anywhere, but especially if you work in a position of authority), but not wrong. It doesn't cross any moral boundary IMO. I don't even think asking for a girl's number, isolated as a single event that was not preceded or followed by any actually wrong thing, is on the same spectrum as those actually wrong things.

To be fair, she doesn't say it's the first thing HE said to her. She just says that her smile lead to him asking for his number. For all we know, he could have been trying to chat her up, told a joke, something, she smiled in response, and then he asked for the number.

And considering she follows it up by retweeting somebody who says "it sucks that women being polite is seen as an invitation for harassment by men (and sometimes can be the other way around)," that actually sounds like the case.

Ok that's fair, I'll give you that. Though I would argue you can do more with non-verbal communication at that stage than verbal.

Also, yeah I want to make it clear (sadly I have to) I got nothing against brie larson. If she felt uncomfortable, I have genuine sympathy for her, no one likes an interaction that makes you feel weird in a public place. The fact that she took this so heavy strikes me as really odd, but that doesn't mean she's a bitch (Why would it? [this is a rhetorical question please don't attempt to genuinely respond])

I imagine a lot of people who are struggling with real problems feel a bit irritated by this, even if I don't personally I can at least understand it. I do get a little annoyed by the constant whining about such minor things though

So you think that single incidents of complaining about things like this aren't a big deal, but the accumulation of tons of those complaints is annoying. That's literally the exact same logic behind why a number of incidents like this, while not a big deal in isolation, become a draining part of life for some people.
