although I didn't particularly care for both of the water ones because racing in water isn't fun

I end up doing butt stomps instead of swimming forward half the time and apparently my depth perception is bad so it took me like two or three tries to get my hat to hit a fish

I just managed to win those after a few tries because there aren't really any gimmicks or shortcuts the gold Koopa can take advantage of to beat you

I finished the Wooded Kingdom race, but I had to look up how to do it (the jump you need to execute is pretty ridiculous and I never would have figured it out on my own).

Well, I figured it out by just trailing the gold Koopa and watching what he did. Tried it a few times and never got it.

Wooded Kingdom is also one of those weird situations where falling doesn't automatically kill you, so I'd fall and the race would still be going on instead of just letting me restart it.

I loved the wooded kingdom shortcut. Im also pretty adept at the long jump + cap bounce combo though. If youre not as comfortable then I can see it being annoying.

Bowser and Moon races were among the easier ones I think. I got them both first try.

I don't think I had ever even attempted it before that race. I totally forgot that was even a thing after the tutorial where they introduce it to you.

Yeah they do kinda skip over it, which is pretty unfortunate because it really opens up a ton of mobility options and lets you do a lot of cool sequence break-y stuff.

Anyway, in Yu Yu Hakusho news, it's nice to see Yusuke finally completely curbstomp someone. Also, this Irish elf Wind Master dude is pretty cool. And now Botan has started up some weird rivalry with the ring announcer girl, but in her defense, she can be kinda annoying. Next up, Yusuke is finally going to attempt the vaunted SPIRIT WAVE.

also Koenma spoils that Yukina is going to show up out of the blue next episode but I can forgive him because for some reason I love the way he says "Yu Yu Hakusho"

I really like the two Hyouka episodes where it's basically just Hotaro and Eru interacting the whole time. You can see how comfortable they've become with each other, and it's easier to notice that Eru's intuition and her sense of humor have improved since the beginning of the story. There's a lot of good banter and back and forth between the two of them. Hotaro coming up with a deduction out of one sentence and being completely right was fantastic. It was very Sherlock-esque. I also liked the fact that once their "game" was over, they completely forgot the reason for the game in the first place. Just shows how much fun they were having to the point that it didn't matter who was right.

BiS is a one of those games I just don't understand what people see in it. Admittedly I didn't get super far, but I at least got far enough to form an opinion, and I didn't really enjoy any of what I did play.

I see playable RPG Bowser, good writing, and plenty of big moments (literally in many cases). It's just a really fun game, and I like the M&L battle system to begin with, so it was nice to implement Bowser into it with his own set of moves. Could have used zero Fawful since I don't like the guy, but he's much less annoying there than he was in Superstar Saga.

Got up over 800 moons last night. Just have Mushroom Kingdom, plus the two extra Moon areas left.

Did some of those round 2 boss fights in Mushroom Kingdom. I kind of hate the centipede one. The tank is maybe my least favorite capture in the game.

The centipede one is kinda annoying, but not because of the tank, which I don't mind. I just hate the fact that it's completely invincible for such long periods of time, which is dumb. I think the ice dude was the only round 2 boss fight that gave me trouble.

The invincibility for the centipede is dumb yeah. I didn't really have much trouble with any of the round 2s. I think one or two of them I died really fast before I remembered how to beat them, and then creamed them on the second attempt.

Of course I notice. I'm pretty sure I mentioned like in the first couple of episodes I watched that it's the sort of excellence I expect from KyoAni shows. You give me something with good direction and presentation, and I'm in.

In Yu Yu Hakusho, Yusuke wins but gets disqualified because THE DARK COMMITTEE is rigging things against him. Botan gets very animated about it. Yukina shows up, and Botan, Keiko, and Shizuru (mostly Shizuru) beat up a bunch of demons like it's nothing. I guess there are weak demons just like there are weak humans. Of course, at the end, Keiko beats the crap out of Yusuke because he's no match for her and stuff. It's a very similar relationship to Sousuke and Kaname in FMP, where Sousuke is a very dangerous man to everyone else but can't stand up to Kaname at all.

Kuwabara does the honorable man thing and he just won't stay down, no matter how bad of a beating he takes. I never would've expected THE POWER OF LOVE to win the day here, but Kuwabara sees Yukina and suddenly beats the crap out of the demon ninja leader dude despite supposedly being on the verge of death. It's kinda hard to take seriously, but it doesn't seem like it was meant to be taken seriously, so whatever. Kuwabara got to be cool and actually win a fight in one episode. Also, ring announcer girl is officially on my bad side after she tells Kuwabara to knock off the witty banter, which is akin to blasphemy. Witty banter forever!

All right, finished with my second run through Hyouka. The last several episodes are really good. I like the last episode a lot. You get to see "serious business" Eru as a family representative, which is a side of her you don't really get to see anywhere else. I also liked the fact that she and Hotaro came up with the exact same suspect at the end without even talking to each other about it first.

I feel like they could've done more with Eru than they did. She showed flashes of being deeper than just being the catalyst who gets Hotaro going, but that's how they used her most of the time. Although I think part of it was Hotaro deliberately kept her out of the loop a lot of the time, especially if he had to do something he felt was underhanded. When he blackmails Jumoji at the end of the cultural festival arc, he openly says he can't ever let Eru know what he did to sell the rest of the copies of Hyouka. I guess there's a part of him that wants to protect her innocence because he sees it as something worth protecting, which is why he nearly rips Satoshi a new one for making her cry in the Valentine's Day episode. Seeing how earnest and how heartbroken Eru was about Mayaka's chocolate was too much for him to take.

Anyway, I've started reading the fan translation of the books. I probably won't do any updates of that since I doubt anyone cares. Perhaps the most irritating part of reading this thing is that they're very inconsistent with their tenses.

There's also an illustration of the characters, and it's kind of startling how different Hotaro in particular looks compared to the anime version.



Well, I can mostly see the resemblance in all the other ones. Eru's face is similar even if the hair is a decent bit shorter than in the show, but man, Hotaro looks so different.

Anyway, I guess I should rank the main four and then add to the overall rankings:

In Yu Yu Hakusho, Yusuke's Spirit Beast that he and I both keep completely forgetting about finally hatches, and it's...not quite what I expected. I imagine despite its appearance and the fact that everyone except Keiko mercilessly teases him about it, it will turn out to be quite powerful when the time comes. Also, the masked fighter who was clearly Genkai even though they tried to swerve you into thinking it wasn't turned out to be Genkai all along! What a shock! Now Yusuke has to undergo the final test so he can face Toguro, who seems to view Genkai as "a mutual friend" for some reason and is aware what's going on the entire time. Also, Hiei barely needs a minute to win the first fight of the semifinals, and he's still raring to go for more. Should be fun!

It's been a while since they've had a fight span over multiple episodes. The next time that happens (unless it's Toguro and even then I won't be totally fine with it), you can be sure I will not be pleased.

Yeah Kai improved it, but if you turn a 15 episode fight into a 6 episode fight it's still 5 episodes too long!

I don't think all fights need to have a 1 per episode rate. Lots of them are good being less, but some are benefited by being long.
Just feels that much more victorious when the day is won.

Togashi gets much better at integrating story into the action as he goes on. Tournament arcs are classic but kind of a primitive way of organizing conflict. The action beats lack context and the story beats are mostly separate.

Eh, I feel like most of the time, these fights have been dragged out unnecessarily. If you can actually keep the action flowing well, then sure, go an extra episode or two. They haven't really been able to do it yet though.
