If you have the pads, you're hired. A nice perk is that it's an unofficial rule that goalies play for free (everyone else has to pay a fee that pays for ice time/officiating, etc)

CaptainHammer posted...

In my league, absolutely not. There are a bunch of different leagues within this organization, ranked A1-D2, with A1 being the highest. We're at the very bottom, which is just amateurs doing it for fun. From what I've heard, A1 has a lot of former college hockey players who may have had a shot at the NHL at one point, but I highly doubt there are any scouts for pro teams or even semi pro that attend those games

It's exaggerated in movies/shows. It is definitely more popular in some areas than others (I'd imagine that some medium towns in Alberta/Saskatchewan it would be close to 25%, while the GTA take rate would be closer to 5%), but it's also expensive to play hockey and it's not the most welcoming sport to adult beginners.

No, everyone says it sucks so you must be wrong.

On another note, I'm still shopping around, trying to figure out what to get my parents since they buy everything they want for themselves and there's nothing left. I just thought that maybe they would enjoy the NES or SNES classics, but then I go and look online and experience the same disappointment everyone else has already gone through when I find out that they're either sold out or going for over $200 on places like Amazon. Fuck that.

I did enjoy the movie, but since that post I've been reading a bunch of discussions about it and have to admit I agree with a lot of the common criticisms about it (except people saying the prequels are better, but that one is less common). My main complaint is with plot holes and all of the plot conveniences, but isn't that just something you have to live with in a Star Wars movie? But I'd see people saying "that kind of stuff never happened in the original trilogy" and now I'm kind of second-guessing myself since it's been forever since I've watched those. I'm sure at my age now I could pick those type of things apart better, like the Death Star shot immediately comes to mind, but maybe it was executed better? I dunno. People do freak out a little bit too much about the wrong things in Star Wars movies. They're more enjoyable if you view them as popcorn movies than expecting Oscar-worthy masterpieces.

Almost every movie I watch nowadays, I'm taken out of the moment by at least one part that doesn't make sense, but I don't let it ruin the whole movie for me. You kind of said this, but I think people are over-analyzing this movie just because it's Star Wars. My only complaint was that the subplot wasn't very interesting and went on for too long.

Coming from someone who's not really a Star Wars fan, no. It's just a bland movie with completely unbelievable characters, several useless plot points, and unsatisfying conclusions.

I imagine they just wouldn't renew it after the 30th season, which might have happened regardless. It would be kind of funny but awful if they just pulled the plug on it randomly. Obviously I haven't cared about The Simpsons for years, but I'd still like to see it get a proper ending.

Of course, I believe a second movie was in the works, so maybe that would be a better way to send it off.

It should end on Homer causing a nuclear accident in the power plant, akin to Chernobyl, and everyone dying in the first five minutes.

Then they just play the Steamed Hams skit three times.

I don't know if you guys have watched it at all in recent years. I've seen a few episodes here and there, and it's obviously awful, but what's really striking about it is how much Julie Kavner's voice has degraded over the years. It must be a pain to play Marge and her sisters but she sounds so horrible it's crazy. It's like painful to listen to.

The only episode I watched in the last 10 or so years was the Futurama crossover, and pretty much all the voices were terrible. The only passable one is Homer but he still doesn't sound nearly as good. The weird thing is that they sound better to me when they're just voicing them for fun in interviews. I assume it sounds worse in the actual show since they've been running through a bunch of takes of dialogue, but it kind of makes me wonder if they all just record lines with zero passion since they know the show sucks.

Back to The Last Jedi: The more I think about it, the more I don't like it, but I wonder if I've just been too infected by negative opinions of the movie. I don't want to completely ignore any flaws, but I also don't want to turn into one of those unpleasable dorks who hates everything. I can't really blame anybody for feeling really strongly about it either way, because it had some really awesome moments but also some really annoying ones.

I had some issues with the Last Jedi and I think some of the criticism is going overboard at times. I think the movie is pretty good, the sub plot could have been streamlined a bit. I think the next movie needs to be better than 7 and 8 to make this trilogy stand out on its own. The prequels, in my opinion, did nothing to stand out.

I'll catch the Simpsons now and again with my kids. They are hit or miss just like many of them throughout the years (including the shorts shown during the Tracey Ullman show). I think some of the episodes that are loved by many viewers I just didn't like so it may be why I am still okay with the show.

I saw the Star Wars. I really liked it, but it was also really flawed.

SPOILERS TIME

Going to get right into it: the subplot was absolutely useless. It could have been completely bypassed if Holdo took Poe into a private quarters and let him in on the plan (honestly, what does a loose cannon do if he has no reason to hold fire?). It wouldn't be a stretch that the dreadnought would detect small transports, especially since they can now track lightspeed travel, making Holdo's final sacrifice still a climatic moment. Furthermore, removing this removes most of the deus ex machina scenarios within the movie.

However, I still really enjoyed it. I found the psychological battle between Rey and Kylo Ren to be very compelling (even if it was shallow). Kylo Ren also works very well as a villain, in the sense that he's very manipulative and humanly chaotic. The fight scenes were very well choreographed--seriously, the moment where they cut into Rey and Kylo fighting back to back was absolutely bad ass. While Luke's sacrifice was built from the same mold as Obi Wan's, the execution was, for me, pinpoint. Finally, it was aesthetically beautiful once again. And I kind of like porgs.

Spoiler-free conclusion: it's not very deep, it does drop off a bit, but it also does what it does best exceptionally, and admittedly nostalgia helps make me hyped for it too.

If The Last Jedi were an athlete, it would be Billy Hamilton.

Yes, she annoyed me enough that I wanted her to zoom into that ship even faster than she did and kill herself off ASAP

I guess that's the one time where I was like, "Uhhh...that was dumb". All the other things people are upset about can be explained why it makes sense, although they want it to be just like the original trilogy while at the same time complaining that it's just like the original trilogy so I don't know.
