Spyce looks and sounds great but YYIAH and Akame both had certain flaws that kept them from being great.

I'm always skeptical with yuri looking anime too, since they often end up not actually being yuri. Konohana was the most recent one, but Yuru Yuri always annoyed me in that regard too.

If that comment is about Yuru Yuri, I also said I don't really think of it as a yuri series despite yuri literally being in the title.

I think the series is mostly a comedy and that any yuri elements present only really exist to further the comedic aspect of the show.

Akuma no Riddle is also yuri. Yuru Yuri is considered yuri by technicality of it being in a yuri magazine.

Now that I think about it, Yuru Yuri and Sakura Trick might be shows Roba may like.

He should watch one of those the next time he needs something uplifting.

I agree with your ranking, but disagree with your reasoning. V3 easily has the best cast of characters. There were a good number in 2 that I either didn't care for or straight up disliked. While in V3 I loved every last one of them.

I said it back on release, but DRV3's cast doesn't have the ridiculously high highs that DR2's has.

It does, however, have a much more consistently good cast and only one actively bad character (Where DR2 has a few utterly fantastic characters, several mediocre/forgettable characters, and a couple stinkers). In that regard, it is better than DR2.

I think most of us can agree that both casts are pretty great though.

I started One Punch Man yesterday and finished it today. It was definitely enjoyable but I'm glad it was only twelve episodes, I'm not sure the concept would've lasted for much longer. I also feel like I might've enjoyed it more if I'd actually seen the types of anime it borrowed from (DBZ and whatnot) since then I could appreciate how it was defying the genre more. Still, it was fun!

bored at work so spring 2018 anime writeups go

3D Kanojo - Funny concept but I could easily see it being mediocre. Really just depends on how its executed and how the characters are. yes I know this can be said about any anime ever leave me alone.

Amanchu! Advance - I still want to watch the first season, mostly just because of it having the same author as Aria. I hope I like it so lefty can make snide remarks about our taste not being the same anymore as if I ever paid the slightest bit of attention to our taste being similar in the first place.

Boku no Hero Academia 3 - Will watch with my 3D Kanojo once its finished.

Butlers - This will be bad.

Caligula - Apparently an adaptation of some mediocre RPG.

Captain Tsubasa - Its cool to see classic anime series get rebooted such as Devilman and Lupin III. Unfortunately, I see this series having a pretty limited appeal and probably not being very good. Hopefully we get a Vlado topic about it.

Comic Girls - WIll probably be one of those slice of life anime that Mac doesnt like (despite being the slice of life guy) and some other random user will think is great. Or Mac will love it and nobody else will.

Cutie Honey Universe - Another Go Nagai reboot. I dont think this will be as good as Devilman but Im somewhat optimistic that it will still be good for what it is. When are we going to get a reboot of Kekko Kamen anyway?

Devils Line - Chuuni sounding series that could be alright but Im skeptical.

Dorei-ku - Predicting this will be the consensus worst show of the season.

FLCL Progressive - I wasnt even really a fan of the original but it warms my heart to see it continue.

Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory - On a pretty similar note to FLCL except I was a fan of FMP. Its sad (but not surprising) that KyoAni isnt doing it. Im not super optimistic but it should still be good, assuming

Gegege no Kitarou - Speaking of reboots Apparently this is a series from the 60s and its responsible for popularizing yokai in anime. Thats an interesting note but I doubt this will be very good.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Im not really sure what this will be like but Im keeping an eye on it for sure.

Golden Kamuy - This should be great.

Gundam Build Divers - I want to watch the prior seasons. It sounds kinda dumb but it seems fairly well liked and the popular Gundam series are always good.

Gurazeni - Kind of an interesting twist on baseball but meh.

High School DxD HERO - I liked the first two seasons but never watched the third. Not sure if I ever will.

Hinamatsuri - Should be good.

Hisone to Maso-tan - Its an original series by Mari Okada so there will probably be a lot of crying. Shes definitely had some misses but I generally like her shows. Really just depends on if BONES includes a must go off the rails clause in her contract. Actually it will probably do that anyway.

Juushinki Pandora - I tried to read the synopsis about five times and was crushed by the infodump everytime.

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi - Sounds like boring and uninspired source material adapted by a studio that hasnt made a good show in probably a decade.

Last Period - An adaptation of some Japan only mobile game. Enough said.

Layton Mystery - I remember hearing about this but I didnt know about there being a female Layton at all. Either way, the Layton movie was pretty decent and I think the style of the games lends itself to anime well. This could be good but hopefully 50 episodes doesnt make it too stretched out or redundant.

Mahou Shoujo Ore - Sounds like it could be hilarious.

Mahou Shoujo Site - Isnt this literally the same exact premise as Magical Girl Rising Project?

Major 2nd - Major is my all-time favorite sports anime so I hope this can be great. My only concern would be that Major executes its concept flawlessly and this might be too similar. Well see though.

Megalo Box - Along the lines of other classic series being rebooted, seems like this could be good.
Nil Adimari no Tenbin - An anime adaptation of an otome visual novel. Enough said.

Oshiri Tantei - This sounds pretty awful but I guess it could be funny depending on how over the top they go with the comedy. Im skeptical though.

Persona 5 - I wasnt crazy about the Persona 4 anime but I think its probably impossible to really capture Persona in any medium other than a video game. Still, I enjoyed it so Im looking forward to this.

Piano no Mori - The manga always sounded pretty interesting to me so this should be great as long as its adapted well.

Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori - Literally nobody cares.

Saredo Tsumibito wa Ryuu to Odoru - Literally what even is this synopsis talking about

Shiyan Pin Jiating - An actual Chinese cartoon wonder if any of these will ever be worth watching.

Shokugeki no Souma - Will watch with my 3D Kanojo once its finished.

Souten no Ken - This is on my radar but Ill probably only watch it if it gets some acclaim which Im doubtful of.

Steins;Gate 0 - Its Steins;Gate.

Sword Art Online Alternative - I guess this is a spinoff of the main series?

Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai - This sounds like it could be really good.

Tokyo Ghoul:re - I liked the first season of the anime which got me to read the whole manga. I never watched season 2 since it was apparently a bad adaptation. I havent read any of :re but Ill watch this assuming its adapted well.

Uma Musume Pretty Derby - PA Works is a studio whose works Im generally interested in but this one sounds like a pass

Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii - This sounds adorable and I have high expectations.

anyway...

Heavy Object (dropped/10) - The first few episodes were pretty cool but the show felt like it lost steam extremely fast after that. I'd probably keep going if the main characters were better but they can't carry this show for me. Havia's perversion jokes are so fucking awful. At first I liked the more mature warlike feel of the show but it just really clashes with all the typical anime hijinks going on two minutes later.

Anyway, finished a few Winter series:

Pop Team Epic had its ups and downs, in terms of actually being funny. To fill time in the adaptation I guess, they had a bunch of long-form skits that were anime original. Some of these could be pretty good, but they generally weren't as consistently funny as the short skits. I definitely appreciated how different all the parts of the show could be, with different styles of animation and VAs and everything, but the manga's much better in terms of making me laugh...

Slow Start was oddly good? This show basically had nothing going for it. The premise was dumb, there's not really anything to set it apart from other SoL series, and the MC is pretty lame. But despite a mostly mediocre first episode with a few cool jokes, the series really took off from the second episode on. The other three main characters are all very good, with their own styles that lend to a lot of funny jokes, and they have enough to them that they don't just feel like like clones of other similar characters. The animation is oddly amazing, for some unknown reason. I also appreciated the use of moderately dirty jokes. Also, for some reason one of the girls has a crush on her teacher (and she also has a crush on the student) and their interactions are just incredible. By the end I liked the show quite a bit. Hana being less interesting than the rest is the only real flaw, and the show utilized her well enough that I didn't really mind most of the time.

Mitsuboshi Colors is kinda the opposite of Slow Start. The premise is awesome, the main characters are all great, and the first episode was my favorite of the season. It didn't get bad later on or anything (there were plenty of truly great episodes), but the direction was nothing special and the animation got terrible enough at times that it affected the show's quality. I've said it before, but if this had been done by the Slow Start team it could've been the best anime of the season. As it was, it was still really funny and enjoyable. Kotoha might just be the best character of the season. I just wish it had been better. Looking forward to reading the manga at some point.

Citrus was a bit of an odd duck. Don't even really know how to discuss it. There was a lot of over the top sexuality and drama, but it was usually entertaining. The most frustrating plotlines were generally resolved very quickly, which I highly appreciated. I liked the main cast of the show a good amount, including Mei, who a lot of people don't seem to be fans of. Most of the little arcs were fun, with Mei and Yuzu's relationship having a neat little back and forth to it so you were never really sure where they were at. Unfortunately the last arc wasn't so great. It's the only one that didn't feel natural, adding some drama where it didn't make much sense. The ending was good at least, I just wish it'd happened a few episodes earlier, where it should've. Still a good show though, and I appreciate a yuri manga getting a full scale adaptation for the first time in forever.

Finally, Laid Back Camp was awesome from start to finish. Rin is the best. Nadeshiko is excellent. Camping antics are consistently entertaining/relaxing/inspiring. Relaxing slice of life shows are pretty much the best in general, and this one's up there in quality. The unfortunate things is that the outclub activities with the side characters aren't so great, but fortunately they take up a relatively small amount of the show. The writer knows that everyone likes Rin and Nadeshiko way more than those losers (Rin and Nadeshiko are on all the volume covers of the manga, with others going completely unseen). From what I can tell, this is looking to be successful too, so there's a decent chance it gets an anime sequel! Would definitely watch that too. Great stuff.

Yeah I do agree with all of this. The last arc felt pretty rushed to me for one reason or another.

I also didn't like the arc before it much, but that's just because I don't like the pink-haired girl as a character and not due to any perceived problems with the writing/progression.
