Yeah this girl is gonna leave TC and TC will be miserable, cat-less, and girlfriend-less

This is the truth. No way this relationship is going to last anyway if she's willing to leave him because of a cat. If she truly cared she'd find a way to make it work instead of demanding him to get rid of it or else.

Are people on CE really that opposed to letting their cats go outside?

We had 3 cats at one point, lived their whole lives indoors from kittens to almost 2 years old. One day one of the cats snuck outside, was gone for like a day, came back, and went outside everyday afterwards until the point he was basically an outside only cat. We followed suit with our other 2 and there was no issue.

They came back once or twice a day to eat or drink from the bowls we kept outside and to get petted and hangout with us on the back patio. They all died of old age.

Theyre animals, their instincts will enable them to survive. Unless you live somewhere with shitty weather I dont see the big deal.

You don't, it's a death sentence. You would literally be killing it.

You could make an outdoor cat into and indoor cat but the other way around doesn't work.

This.

If the cat grew up outside it's different. If they grew up as an indoor cat you're basically throwing them to the slaughter. Get someone to adopt it.

1. Risk of getting hit by a car
2. Risk of attacks from other animals
3. Disease and health risks (Feline HIV, tapeworms, ringworms, etc.)
4. Risk of those who hate cats (like TC) mistreating it when unsupervised
5. Risk of the cat getting trapped or lost then starving to death
6. If not fixed (which a lot of outside cats are not because of bad owners), reproduction is going to happen
7. Decimating the bird population in the area from a non-native animal
8. Reduces their lifespan

I mean there are tons of reasons to not let your cat outside. The risks outweigh the reward.

Plus outdoor cats have to be outdoor cats their whole life. A cat that grew up indoors will NOT survive as an outdoor cat. I think it's fucked up to have an outdoor cat period but trying to make an indoor cat in to an outdoor cat is straight up evil

I mean, I get it but I don't get it.

The cats I've owned were always a mix of indoor/outdoor. They lived long lives. Slept, ate and cuddled indoors. Used the bathroom and prowled outdoors. Never had to deal with litter boxes and they were great for pest control.

I guess it really depends on where you live.

When she gave you this ultimatum the correct choice was choosing your pet and giving that bitch a boot in the ass out the door.

It's not technically true that indoor cats wouldn't "know how to survive" outdoors.

Cat instinct doesn't go away. Cats would be more capable than small dogs or specialized breeds of dogs that serve no purpose.

As long as they have their claws and aren't wearing one of those stupid bells around their neck, they could survive depending on age and where they're located. Won't help the bird population thrive, but...most would survive depending on the area obviously and weather.

Some cats are scared of the outside for some reason, but my cats are dying to get out there.

Ultimately though, the top 8 that other person posted is probably true. So...they're better off being indoors for sure.

TC, just give me your cat. You already made a dumb topic asking if you should declaw your cat for your girlfriend and now you're asking how to keep it outside when it's not used to the outside environment. You are not fit to be a pet owner.

Regardless if this relationship with your girlfriend works out, you should do everyone a favor and refuse to adopt any more animals once this cat is gone. It's highly immature and irresponsible.

An ultimatum is not a compromise it is a my way or the highway, instead of being a real man you caved like a whipped bitch when it came to the well being of your pet vs some ho your with for now.

A real girlfriend would never issue an ultimatum like this nor would she be such a ****(runt of the litter) to ask you to declaw the cat.

I know some boys will do everything that their girlfriend tells them to do like the dormats they are but picking her over your pet is a new fucking low.

Wrong. One, it scratches people, it's clearly a hazard. Two, it's just a pet, humans take priority over animals. Do you abandon your kids, divorce your wives, disown your parents, cut off your siblings or unfriend your friends over a pet? No you don't. You either take steps to reconcile their differences or you side with the party with higher priority (i.e. the humans).

No wonder you people don't have any friends.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it TC, but if you have a garage, let your cat live there.

A few years back through a messy divorce my brother had, my parents ended up taking him and his ex-wife's cat, but couldn't keep the cat indoors due to dogs/allergies/etc. The cat now basically lives in my parent's garage mostly, but they leave the door open for her so that she can go outside if she likes. She never strays far from the garage and mostly just walks around the yard, coming back into the garage at night to sleep (and has a heat light during the winter to stay warm).

That started maybe 7 years ago and the cat is like 14 years old now, and seems to be doing fine/healthy. I highly recommend it.

He would always come back in the mornings. We even moved houses and he learned the new area and kept to the same old routine.

He was declawed too.

Just a badass cat overall. Probably my favorite pet ever. He was extremely intelligent for a cat, a smug bastard yet had every reason to be, and on top of that very lovable. He wasn't some prissy bitch who hated being touched.

I've had 3 cats growing up into now.

The first one was a stray. He was full grown but young, and we fed him and during a huge snowstorm he just walked inside and he was our cat ever since. We lived right in front of a busy road but he knew what it was since he grew up outside. Probably saw plenty of the other strays get killed by cars. So he lived his life happily, coming and going inside and outside as he pleased. He died of old age.

My other two cats grew up as indoor cats. I would never let them be outside cats. They didn't grow up and have to survive through it so they would probably get hit by a car within a week. Plus the one cat is way too much of a sweetheart. In a survival of the fittest world she would never make it. So she sticks with me. INSIDE.

TC is a troll but this post is so wrong. Cats dont have instincts to avoid getting run over by cars, killed by wildlife or kidnapped by people.

Our first cat was an outdoor cat. He died of feline leukemia after getting in a fight with an infected cat. He was only 4. It was a painful thing to watch him die, he really suffered. I vowed not to let cats outside after that.

My brother got a cat a couple of years later. I begged him not to let it out but he did. Cat disappeared and it was only a year old.

He got another cat after that and he kept indoors. But one day he was negligent and the cat escaped out the front door. It never came home. It was about 4.

My husband had 2 cats before I met him. He let them out all the time. They disappeared about a year later.

My cousin had an outdoor cat. It would stay out for days and bring home birds it caught. A real predator type. It was killed by coyotes after a few years outside.

Its honestly negligent of owners to just assume cats have these super instincts that allow them to survive. Your cats just got lucky but statistics show indoor cats have far longer lifespans.
