I will say that Ulti is right to criticize the legend system in hearthstone, though. If you have a 51% winrate, and you keep queueing, eventually you will get legend. Which is...mostly a grind. I think day[9] summarizes my thoughts pretty well here.

(I did find that things got messier around rank 1, when you start facing low legend decks, cause people in low legend play wacky off-meta stuff; this is mostly an issue if you try to play a control deck to legend though cause you won't know what to play around...but I did play a control deck to legend so...).

But if you can get a 65% winrate it is a lot less of a grind. Lots of streamers have managed to pull 80%-100% winrates to legend, which...obviously some of that is luck, but it happens often enough that I end up concluding that they must have better winrates against rank 5-1 people than I do.

I'm not sure this is a criticism. This is... the definition of how a ladder works. The idea is that as you rise, your winrate will get lower as you face people of increasingly greater skill level until you are playing against people of equal skill as you at which point you stop climbing.

The issue comes when you can climb with a 50% winrate or possibly even very slightly sub-50 wr which HS also allows through bonus stars (eventually with enough playtime).

You just do nothing, then you Dinosize a windfury minion and just OHKO someone. It's so weird.

I always liked playing as Even Paladin a lot more than playing as Odd Paladin.

You actually get removal and AoE (Whoo, Consecrate! Whoo, Equality!) You get buffs (Whoo, Blessing of Kings, whoo Spikeridge Steed). You actually have choices in how you build your board (you can either make a wide board with a bunch of small things or one or two big things depending on what you are playing around--you can keep pressure on by making giant minions while playing around Spreading Plague).

Like...it feels like a deck where you have actual decisions to make. Unlike Odd Paladin, where all your cards flood the board. No boardclear. No real way to play around spreading plague. All flood all the time.

I mean, there are no bonus stars from 5 to legend. The ladder also resets every month, so all the skill levels tend to end up relatively scrambled.

There's still a rank floor at 5, though.

Someone with a 40% winrate would eventually get to legend if they played enough games, thanks to the rank floor (except they probably wouldn't thanks to the ladder reset).

OK, quick spreadsheet simulation time.

Number of games to legend with a 50% winrate:

231, 340, 894, 583, 205, 348, 221, 491, 851, 167

Number of games to legend with a 45% winrate

463, 1502, 3750, 5592, 6107, 3521, 5415, 9328, 1750, 3460

Number of games to legend with a 55% winrate

330, 179, 136, 278, 213, 139, 243, 169, 104, 157

Number of games to legend with a 60% winrate

67, 249, 103, 118, 110, 77, 118, 189, 91, 90

I'm guessing I'm closest to 55% when I'm actually tryharding, just based on those numbers (I definitely don't always tryhard though). Someone with a 45% winrate probably would get to legend eventually if they played 30 games per day every day, but realistically, nah, probably not reaching legend with 45% winrate unless you're like...an actual bot that plays 24/7 (actual bots have hit legend though). I absolutely believe there are people who play better than me and can hit 60%+ winrate against rank 5-1 range (at which point they can reach legend most months by playing 3-4 games per day).

That would make it really, really easy to hit legend. Someone with 40% winrate could realistically reach legend in about 300 games on average. Someone with a 50% winrate would probably hit legend every month if they played regularly.

That would make it easier to go from rank 5 to legend legend than it is to go from rank 10 to rank 5. Four extra rank floors is slightly stronger as a mechanic than winstreaks

I definitely agree that it can be frustrating being close to legend and going on a loss streak. My first time getting to legend, I got to rank 1 five stars, and then loss streaked back down to rank 2, and spent a few days bouncing between rank 2 and rank 1, I think even dipping to rank 3 at one point. Eventually made it back up and got legend though =)

TBH, though, I think I would like it better if it did a more MMR based ranking system that promoted based on winrate, instead of "win = gain star; lose = lose star". They actually use MMR at legend. They just don't use it for much below legend (other than matchmaking I think? At least, I'm pretty sure MMR is how people who are legend can be matched against people who are not legend).

Wait, Dane hasn't gotten a reveal card before? I'm kind of surprised, he seems like a pillar of the community (certainly a major pillar of the wild community; basically for wild what Kripp is for Arena, except with a really positive personality).

I'm sure Dane will find a use for this in wild, although I dunno if it goes into the current iteration of Dane Rogue. It costs 8 so it gets summoned by Silver Vanguard, but if it gets summoned the battlecry doesn't trigger making it a vanilla dude (really weak Silver Vanguard summon). You'd almost want it to cost 9 for that deck to avoid it being recruited.

On the other hand, this probably does something silly with Shudderwock.

With Test Subject and the new 2-mana priest spell, you could resummon him indefinitely (barring transform effects) with 2 deathrattles to spare, but Im not sure if that endgame does enough.

I could also see it used in Current Deathrattle Rogue and Paladin, Rogue especially has great use between Blade and Vial to get a sticky board out
