Boogiepop wa Waranai ... 04

Man that episode was really, really, reaaallyyyy good. It feels to me like they did a better job of focusing on the aspects of the novels which were cut from the adaptation of the first book; more internal thoughts from characters to give them more depth, more dialogue based interactions between people. Everything about this just feels like it was done so well and I enjoyed watching it from start to finish.

Like if the rest of the show is this quality or better I would finally say it was more of a GREAT adaptation of a great series rather than just a good adaptation of a great series.

Imaginator was bae and also life

the flashbacks were used really effectively this time and it felt like the flow of time was a lot easier to understand. it had about the same linearity as episode 2 which I feel like is a lot more important when you're establishing a new arc. please just continue the show in this style and I will be happy, anime gods.

Gotoubun no Hanayome ... 02

Another really funny one, I'd say even funnier than the first episode. I was wondering why it seemed like people were overrating the headphones girl but now that I've seen this... I realize it's just because she is the only one to get her own episode so far. Well played.

The MC continues to be awesome as well. I can't explain it but he's just really funny and cool in a way that I can get into really easily. His quote about love was one of my favorite character moments and jokes in the series so far, all rolled into one.

For some reason Miku really reminds me of Hitoha from Mitsudomoe. Like, a lot. She even sounds the same too. Huh. I'll go look it up later when I'm not so tired and see if it's the same actress.

Yakusoku no Neverland ... 02

Alright, yeah, I'm definitely feeling this show a lot more now. I feel like these really good thrillers tend to have pretty weak, predictable first episodes, and it's after that when you can start to figure out just how good they are gonna be. Norman was a legend in this episode. He's officially my favorite now. Emma was really good too. Ray didn't get to do much but he feels like he has the most room for development, which could make him really have an advantage over the others.

I was feeling the Death Note vibes in this one more than Code Geass, yeah, so now my expectations are gonna be a bit higher.

The music during the forest scene where Norman and Ray were talking

great stuff

Yakusoku no Neverland ... 03

Norman is still my favorite but I'm starting to like Ray again. He has a vance style casual arrogance, although it's done in a very child-ish anime type way, but it's really amusing. Anytime someone asks him for advice he usually goes 'well what do you think,' waits for their reply, and then gives the actual right answer. Instead of just giving the right answer from the start. LOL

the tag scene was great. a little disappointing to see Emma of all people get caught, although the reasoning for why made sense. Norman looked so epic when he was looking down on the new Sister. the idea of one of the other kids (or more) being a spy is awesome and adds another layer to the drama and tension.

yeah I noticed some small things like when they go to take curtains from the close to make ropes, Norman opens the door with a rag on his hand (to hide his fingerprints). not even sure if this was in the anime and made it happened so fast that I missed it.

also the day that Ray goes and meet Norman and Emma in the woods because he was following them... the mother notices the spot where he usually sits at the tree is empty.

the subterfuge is awesome and it's a lot more easy to soak in all of these small details in a static medium rather than one which is constantly moving on its own.

Gotoubun no Hanayome ... 03

I can sorta see where Reg was coming from, the more I watch of this show. Ep 3 especially feels like the weakest and most unfunny one so far. Not that I'm saying it's bad or unfunny as a whole, just that the quality has gone down over time. Like, from 'pretty great' to just 'good.' One interesting thing is that I thought they would just give each character focus one at a time, like they did with Miku. Instead, we see mostly the same characters continuing to get focus and then it's gradually shifting. Like, this episode was still mostly about Miku.

Anyway yeah the weakest component of this show, for me, is the reliance on drama sections. The drama is too simple to really be engaging, which is good, because you don't want it to take away from the comedy. But with the comedy being the main focus it feels like they spend too much time on the drama considering that. Also the jokes in ep 3 were the least funny to me so far. All of the best jokes were in episodes 1-2, and even discounting the "best jokes" the average quality of joke was still lower.

how sad for Gotoubun no Hanayome

Boogiepop wa Waranai ... 05

I am so bad at watching anime. anyways here we go!

being the exact middle of a story arc this was basically just a lot of moving stuff forward. this episode had the most straightforward narrative of any so far. I like how everything was done though. the switch to anou was interesting but especially the part where suddenly spooky E shows up out of nowhere for the first time. felt really intense.

not sure if the ending is a proper twist or not, guess I'd have to see what anime only people thought about it. if anything though it should have been obvious they were somehow connected since the first time spooky E appeared.

Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! ... 01,02,03

I went ahead and watched the first few episodes of this all in one batch. I'll give my overall assessment of the show so far. Firstly I think it leans way too heavily on the creepy premise of an adult character being attracted to a child. This is not a cute girls comedy show that happens to have one creepy older character for comedy sake. The main character of WataTen is literally the older character and the show mostly revolves around:

1. Mya being a NEET. It says somewhere that she is a college student but she sleeps all day, doesn't like being around strangers, and I have never seen her go to class one time.

2. Mya being so socially awkward and inappropriate that she can't even have normal conversations with other people. Honestly this is sort of funny, though. Like, some of the jokes work.

My honest assessment of this show based on those two factors alone: When you talk to people who say they hate all anime, they think it's for pedophiles, or that anime is just creepy in general... this is exactly the show they have in mind. This show was literally manifested into being as something that was originally a strawman in somebodies imagination.

The show does have some good qualities that actually would normally appeal to someone like me in a vacuum: Cuteness. It's pretty good with this, and shows that revolve around cuteness can be fun to watch. This show is a bit too childish with it for my taste, though. Secondly, fashion. I like fashion and seeing characters dress up in different outfits is cool. But they make it largely about cosplay here, and it comes across as some sort of nerd fantasy rather than being about the fashion. Especially with the angle of most of the characters being fairly young kids. Just not for me. Comedy; The comedy is pretty hit or miss anyway.

If they focused more on the funny jokes, made the show more about fashion, and dialed back the creepiness of the main character I think that is one way they could make it a lot better. Something else different they could do; Make it a bit more serious. I think one of my main problems with this is that you know the main romantic relationship in this series is not going anywhere, and it will never go anywhere. I've read a few good manga that involved romances with an age gap -- I like alternative romance -- I didn't like that aspect but they were good enough that I liked them in spite of that. I feel like this series could have potentially went that route, and it may have worked with these characters. Instead, Mya is a bit character from another show who was, for some reason, made into the main character of her own show. Boring.

Mya: Her characterization is just vague enough that I am mildly interested in her, but this lingering feeling that the show will never deliver on anything makes me already lean toward dislike.

Hinata: Pretty good. She probably works the best for the show as for what it is right now, without making any of the changes that I would make. She's cute, but not sexualized, and her personality is adorable. The ending part of episode three actually hit me with some emotions.

The Mom: She is literally the Deal With It meme and walks around with a blunt in her mouth, only showing up to punish Mya whenever she has done something wrong. Enough said.

Hana: The best comedic character in the show as of right now. Would potentially be the best character if the show was serious as well, but it's not.

Noa: The gimmick character who has to exist because of the way the show has presented itself.

A very average show that so happened to be on my list of things that I might check out once I started catching up with other things, and may be dropped just as easily if I start falling behind. If episode 3 ended any other way I would have dropped already.

I don't think Miya's a NEET. She sells her clothes online for money, I believe, which can be a decently profitable profession in Japan (and maybe elsewhere too?). I'm pretty sure she's just college-aged, not an actual college student.

I don't particularly disagree with anything you said about the show. But I like it anyway. It's not as funny as last season's Uzamaid which had a similar premise, but it is cuter.

would you like it better if the romance was an equal aspect of the plot, rather than just being a vehicle for jokes? I guess this is a problem with romance series in general and not really respecting the viewers enough to give them a straight answer or concrete developments on anything. I'm just trying to figure out why they wouldn't make the romance more pronounced if it seems like fans would enjoy that more.

Hmm. I feel like this is a problem that kind of plagues cute girl SoL in general? Plenty of them have lots of romantic teasing, but we don't get any romance. For something you've seen, Yuru Yuri for example has plenty of characters with potential for romance, but instead we just get lots of teasing and the attraction is basically always used as a joke. I think a lot of Japanese writers fail to realize that you can get plenty of entertainment out of romances that develop and characters who become couples, too (even serious romance series have a problem where they often end when the couple gets together). Couples can be funny, and they can provide interesting drama. Personally, I highly enjoy it when the main couple actually gets together, and I find it frustrating when shows would rather just tease it for the length of the show's existence. It's gotten to the point that even someone acknowledging their feelings for another character can be enough to satisfy me...

For this series in particular, it'd be great if they took the romance seriously. Serious yuri romance between adult/loli has plenty of potential for entertainment (there's one manga I read about it). But I think that'd be appealing to a more niche market and a lot of fans wouldn't be able to keep themselves in denial when watching an anime about that.

haha yeah I agree with all of this. that's probably why I don't read as much romance stuff as I used to anymore. it just got tiring that EVERYTHING had a pretty unsatisfying ending, and things with a good resolution were pretty legendary rare exceptions.

Yakusoku no Neverland ... 04

Since I have read most of the manga by now I'm gonna refrain from commenting too much on this series anymore. I will say this episode ended EXACTLY at the moment where I thought it would, so that was cool. And uhh... hmm...

Oh yeah, honestly, up to this point, I would say that I think the anime is actually better than the manga. Sure, they cut some things here or there, but the presentation is just done so well. Really great adaptation. Heck, there's even parts in the manga that I wasn't a huge fun of, so I'll be interested to see if the anime can improve on those.

Boogiepop wa Waranai ... 06

another Suema episode and a really strong one for it. she is a really, really interesting character in the books and while her anime counterpart lacks quite the same level of depth she shows off a lot of her character strength here. this episode actually leans back on the nonlinear storytelling a bit, I liked the rooftop conversation being spliced with the park bench conversation -- orihata discussing the same topic with two different people at two different times. that worked really well.

but this was also one of the first episodes where we spent a lot of time going back and seeing characters that were already established as existing in the world. basically all of the different perspectives and points of view that were used during the first story arc didn't just disappear. they reaffirmed that all of these people still exist, they're all still walking around doing things, but we simply used new perspectives to tell this new story, with the exception of suema who we came back to for this part of the story arc. it gave the episode a few familiar feel and I think helps solidify the structure of this world, where each character spends their time, and how they are linked together.

the anou scene in this episode is one of those ones that does make me go 'okay please just read the novels.' I feel like this lacked the emotional punch that book had for me and, aside from, it's kind of an important thing to understand because this is what the entire first book is about. I can honestly say in the anime version it just sort of felt like it happened. like he starts crying but you don't get a great sense of what it's about or how it ties into the major themes of the story up to this point. I understand it a bit better but only because of my outside knowledge. at least from my estimation I would think an anime only would not feel that much from this scene.

Domestic na Kanojo ... 03

The comedy skit in the cafe was pretty good. I know it's actually scripted IRL by whoever wrote the manga or the specific dialogue for the anime, but I do hope they keep doing more 'freeform' stuff like this where it's presented as the characters just bantering. Probably the best part of the show so far.

The piano during the kissing scene was good. Sensei's ass also looked huge in those sweatpants. I thought this guy was about to have sex with two of his sisters within about three episodes. That is like nearly hentai pacing. What a legend.

Best friend is a bit of a goofball but I think he adds an element to the show that makes it pretty unique. It would be a completely different show without him; more melodramatic for sure.

... and then they go and end the episode on some death note shit. "tonight... we'll execute our plan!!"

Domestic na Kanojo ... 04

The tone during the confrontation scene in the cafe was a little bit wooden and strange, but everything else about this episode was good. At least I thought so. It's weird that this should have been the focal point of the entire arc and it ended up being the weakest scene in the episode, though, and probably just overall felt underwhelming compared to all of the events swirling around it.

Also their epic plan was to tail Hina by following ten steps behind her. Genius.
