At least I hope that a dislike of how it's not a finished story is why it only got sixth.

Hopefully it gets a season two in a couple years. Not sure if there's going to be enough chapters (since it's on 40 now and probably close to finished, right?) or it's popular enough, but it really deserves one.

Went through Rokka - Braves of the Six Flowers the other day. The mystery setup was great and a nice change of page from most fantasy "good guys vs demon lord" setup.

I did nail who the 7th was super early on. Adlet was a great MC, the only flaw being how quick he seems to have fallen so hard for Fremy, but I can roll with it. It was great seeing a MC who is genuinely resourceful, not just with their equipment and fighting style but being able to think on the fly. A lot of the series reminded me of portions of Danganronpa and Ace Attorney with trying to piece together the clues, and I'm a sucker for that stuff.

I liked the reveal of there being ANOTHER 7th, but I think the execution of it could have been better. It feels a bit too tacked on at the end instead of a major gamechanger, if that makes any sense, with regards to the cast's reaction to it.

Also Hans is best bro, I didn't expect to like him as much as I did. Chamo was one note, I liked most of the cast pretty well.

I knew going into it that the series is unlikely to get a second season, which is a shame. I might actually delve into the source material on this one as I've heard the LNs are licensed and translated.

Just a word of warning, afaik the Rokka novels have been on hiatus for a few years now and who knows if they'll ever be completed.

though at the very least, they find out who the real traitor/seventh is and take out one of the major villains so there's some closure on that point at least.

Although I think it's kind of a worse cliffhanger than the first volume, since things were starting to go in a very dark direction...

very few shows are profitable from just the ads that play when they are broadcast on tv, so anime is mainly used as an advertisement to sell the source material

One Piece anime sells the manga, and Pokemon sells theme park tickets and games

Aside from the budget issues, how many anime airing now do you think actually have those sorts of long arcs? I don't know if you've noticed, but One Piece is beyond abnormally long at this point. An average series is legit like 1/10 to 1/5 as long as OP currently is, and who knows how much longer OP will run.

Unless you're proposing that new, original anime get written with said arcs in mind. In which case you're basically guaranteeing it'll sell, which nobody in their right mind is actually going to guarantee.

Money and time.

Note that One Piece looks like absolute fucking garbage now and is basically a motion comic but...worse.

Seasonal release allow time for shows to have a better development schedule. Of course, in a lot of cases it's just a matter of seeing if the show can prove itself sales wise, too. Look at the difference between something like Black Clover, which is wrought with problems due to tight scheduling, and HeroAca, which takes breaks.

A lot of older stuff gets a free pass because theyve been on air so long theyre part of 2 generations lives now. At least thats how I view those shows never going on breaks. You cant just put OP or Pokemon on break for months or years because people have been watching it weekly for like 2 decades or more now. Kids who grew up watching it are watching it with their kids now and thats a special thing.

These long ass shounen anime get a ridiculous amount of filler just to avoid catching up with the source material.

Finished a couple manga recently.

The Emperor and I was a fun series about a girl who magically gets an emperor penguin as a pet. It's solid SoL all the way through, with fun penguin antics and good laughs. The cast is small, but they're all good. Had more of a Yotsuba or Flying Witch type feel than a cute girl SoL series. It was all color, which is fairly unique. Probably helps penguins stand out as black and white. Only four volumes, which it was planned to be from the start. Cool when an author manages to execute exactly what they want like this. Easily the best manga recommendation I've ever gotten from the icon ownz all.

Also finished My Monster Secret/Actually I Am.../Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa. This was pretty unique. On the one hand, it's kind of a typical harem romcom, but on the other hand, it's actually pretty heavy and the harem elements aren't that bad. It's more of a romance with a specific heroine from the start, and the harem elements generally aren't that intrusive. Unfortunately, they are annoying when they pop up, and the other haremettes mostly feel like assholes rather than sympathetic characters (no, it is not acceptable to tell your best friend's boyfriend that you love him). The cast varied a fair amount in quality too, though most of them were pretty good. Asahi was mainly solid as a protagonist, though the chapters where he wasn't the focus were often better than average. Youko was a real fun heroine. Akane was the highlight of the series, as basically the character who exists to fuck with the main cast. She definitely got the most laughs. Mikan was the worst of the cast as basically the character who exists to fuck with the main cast but in an annoying and non-humorous way. Nagisa was super awesome early on, but she got boring later in the manga when the author seemed not to have the capability to let her leave for a few chapters. And Shiho... well, she was kinda lame too. The nosebleeds and sexiness stuff were generally not funny (or sexy).

Anyway, it was cool to have a series like this that actually focused on the comedy most of the time, and it was good at it, too. The serious parts didn't work as well, though they were occasionally good. The time travel stuff was almost all bad, alas. The mystery of what happened in the future was stupid and shouldn't have existed. Good ending though. Nice emotion there.

Now to find another series to read...

Did not dig chapter 1 of Samurai 8 at all, but plenty of good series aren't amazing out the gate, who knows.

I don't like the art. Particularly I dislike the lack of shading. A lot of it looks like unfinished linework.
