People that think Heavy Rain is worth any measure of strength are probably the most currently delusional group in this topic. The game would easily lose to most of the indies polluting the bracket. Indies have small dedicated fanbases, noone gives a shit about a C-Tier studio game that added absolutely nothing to gaming.

How many wins does Assassin's Creed have before this? I can only think of Ezio winning R1 in 2013.

Probably more noteworthy is that Ezio went up against Zelda twice in 2010 and 2018 - first time he got 38%, 2nd time 25%.

Altair has a few wins as well.

Yeah, Altair beat Guybrush, Isaac and Lucario in round 1 of 2008 and then Marth and Lucario in round 2 while finishing behind Duke. Got 4th in round 3.

He beat Liquid Snake in 2010.

Then beat Ratchet and Shulk in pre-Smash Shulk in 2013.

All those were easy wins.

I think 2006 and 2008 were fine! 2007 only became a mess because of L-Block. I distinctly remember 2005 being a really rough one where people argued for entire topics about whether it was stupid to think Dante even had a chance of beating Vincent.

Hey, I'm still always in it to win it! I imagine that's the case for most of us, though time has tempered the argumentative edge we all used to have. It's pretty "live and let live" among the fogies here.

During Games 2015, I remember hoping so hard that Starcraft 1 would beat Mass Effect 2. It was so close too *cries.



2015 Games I agree with Ulti, it's one of the top 4 contests we've ever had. I'm not sure I agree with him that it was the overall best, but it was damn good

I still feel that the 2015 Games contest was much better than 2018 Characters. Notice how very few people even reference matches from 2018 Character Battle any more, even though it was fairly recent. There were a lot of close matches too. It just didn't seem to matter that much for some reason...

I think because there's been so many character battles already that they all kinda blend together. Games contests are just more special. We care about the games more than the characters.(GAMEfaqs)

Nah Meat Boy and Isaac are totally different. Sonic Mania's probably no Nioh either.

Super Meat Boy was basically the vanguard of the indie boom, the developers are even effectively the leads of the Indie Game documentary. It will be up there. Isaac was always going to be mid-range at best and we just underestimated Nioh, Super Meat Boy should be only behind the indie elites.

I had Civilization winning against AC up until the eleventh hour. Glad I changed that! My last-minute bracket changes usually blow up in my face, so this is a nice change of pace.

I'm pretty shocked at how dismal Sonic Mania looks here, though, since that game seemed to really help the Sonic crew in the last Character Battle. Meat Boy isn't setting the world on fire either, but I don't think Ys and Slay the Spire are that far apart; I could easily see Sonic dropping this in R2.

Why would this matter for its GameFAQs strength? Bastion, another major vanguard of the indie boom, barely beat an opponent that was already pitifully weak in 2015, let alone now. On the other hand, Ori and Hollow Knight certainly weren't involved in said vanguard, yet they're the only two indies that have strongly exceeded expectations so far.

I think lots of us drew the wrong conclusion from the list of characters who boosted. The likes of the Sonic crew, DK, Crash, Pac-Man, and Castlevania characters all had new games (Smash for the last few) to enhance their strength, so that was the natural explanation for why they climbed. However, it now seems clear that their jumps were largely due to the extra apathy votes flying around from voters forced to pick in every single match, as some had suspected without confirmation. That doesn't totally explain why Sonic Mania itself is seeing such a small benefit from the apathy vote, but I don't think many voters love the likes of the Sonic and DKC series even independent of their nostalgia for them.

I can't bear to re-read those old topics. I was 11 or 12 when I first came to this site and started posting at 13, during the pinnacle of Character Battle popularity. God knows how petulant and immature I must have been.

I nearly had a lizard brain angry reaction to Ys VIII losing, but I am not particularly surprised. I will say that, based on its quality, it should be stronger - I highly recommend to any action RPG fan.

What are people making of P5's performance? Also, is there any chance it gets stronger as the contest goes on with the Royal version releasing a week ago?
