I fear my own death yes. If I think about it too much my anxiety will hit the roof. It's something I can't escape and I won't even know when it happens so it's pointless to fear it however my brain isn't built to understand not existing for eternity.

its irrational since I wont be around to experience it, but the concept and finality of being dead and gone for all time fills me with dread

I believe in no afterlife. Also I find my mind thinking about it now and then but not as much as I used to. It wasn't until several years ago I became more aware of my own mortality due to developing anxiety and having a panic attack that I believed was a heart attack.

CwebbMichSac4 posted...

Being as you're aware of nothing at that point I can see why people would think yeah. Personally I like life.

This topic gives me deep existential anxiety.

There's no point in worrying about it. It happens to everyone, it's unavoidable, and the alternative of somehow having eternal life is actually worse if you really start thinking about it.

I fear dying uselessly, like in a freak accident that would be impossible to foresee or avoid. Other than that, dying is just another part of life (yeah, the last part), and the only thing you have to be afraid of is not making the most of it, and ending up regretting something you failed to accomplish.

Not really. I've had quite a few close calls and they were just things that happened. I'm much more afraid of a painful prolonged death rather than just dying. You probably wouldn't even know you were dying, I doubt it feels any different than dozing off or passing out at worst. Unless of course it's one of the prolonged painful ones, and in that case it might even be welcome after a certain point.

I look forward to being dead, but not the act of dying itself.

That being said, I have alot of experience with it, and in general it goes by pretty fast, even if it doesn't seem like
it at the time.

I do not want a long, prolonged death/sickness though, but luckily live in a state where that is not required.

Lack of oxygen is not a bad way to go at all, but if you are not underwater (and not panicking in that state even), your body will naturally fight against it, breathing faster and faster, until you finally pass out. Not fun, but again, doesn't last that long.

The point of living, for me, it to enjoy yourself and help others do the same, as much as possible along the way.

Checking out early if you are terminally ill, or can't enjoy yourself, help others do the same etc, seems logical to me,
and always has.

If you can make life a bit better, prevent suffering or balance it with happiness, then you should do so as long as possible.

There is absolutely no point in being afraid of actually being dead though, it will happen, and the time between now and then will be gone in an instant for everyone, just like the time between when you were 5 years old and now, has also happened instantly.

So don't focus on fear, focus on fun, don't worry about what will happen, try and make what is happening as great as possible. Don't take from others and hoard everything you can, share what you have, and create as much joy as possible.

That is at least how I see things.

I dont really have an opinion on whether or not any kind of awareness or existence occurs after death, because theres no way of knowing. I try to be content with the fact that so much of existence is unknown and not understood, that anything could be possible.

You mostly just deal with being a bit peeved, then contemplate whether it would be more productive to wait for some manner of life to reemerge here, with or without your assistance, or find something more entertaining than a smouldering spaceball.

I don't fear death. I am not strong so I know I won't live long. I've long accepted the reality that I will soon be wiped out by natural selection. I just fear the process of death: the pain from a knife stab, gun shot, blow, terminal illness, or any other form of torture.

Put a respirator over your face and do a negative pressure test to see what it would be like without oxygen. Once you exhale, thats it.

If death does happen to just be the end then fantastic i am 100% on board. But there is no way of knowing until its your time though sadly.

I'm the opposite. I don't fear the cessation of my existence or non-existence in general, I just don't want to die in some way that's painful, prolonged, or otherwise problematic.

This is actually why I'm perfectly content with the idea of euthanasia - if I ever reach a point where I'm just really sick or injured or my overall quality of life is going to be miserable, I'd rather just overdose or huff nitrogen or something. I have no desire to cling to life solely for the purpose of clinging to life.

That assumes you believe it's unknown.

If you're absolutely confident there's an afterlife, or absolutely confident there's no afterlife, you can pretty safely say you know exactly what's going to happen when you die.

You could always be wrong, but that's not really going to affect your personal confidence level.

I love the way you think @dancer62. I'm 8 more years away than you though lol.

I don't fear either one having experienced both sort of. In 1972 I was in a bad motorcycle accidentand was clinically dead for about 5 minutes or so I was told by the nurses at the hospital. The next 48 years have been very painful, although less so since my leg amputation in 2017 (long term result of same accident). I am high functioning but am also on oxycodone 24/7 for pain management. I plan on living as long as my body lets me and will enjoy every minute I have left. I don't want death but don't fear it.

I dont fear dying. I just get a little grim when I think about the fact that I live alone with very little contact with friends and family. Now I like my solitude and love my life It's just that when I go it'll be alone (which I'm ok with) and it'll probably be a few weeks before some unfortunate soul finds what's left of me.
That's what I fear. Someone walking by my house and noticing a strange smell. Which leads to someone discovering my rotting corpse in a less then flattering position. I think about it because I know an acquaintance who went out like that.

I don't fall into either category, I just understand there's nothing I can do about it. I already deal with sourceless anxiety attacks, why not accept what I can?

I have a loving spouse, a bunch of fur children, and a pretty good family.

I'm pretty useless myself, I'm pretty 'busted' mentally and physically. I'll live as long as I do, and feel bad randomly for it, and then I'll one day die. Doesn't mean I have nothing to lose, I'm always finding reasons to keep going to fight down the depression thoughts.

I had food poisoning for a week bad enough I honestly thought I was going to die, so bad it took me another week to actually recover after getting through actually having it. Had a 104 fever start of the year that basically was like that too. Almost drowned as a kid, lightning struck the road when stepdad/sis/self were coming back from a bike ride. Blinding white, thought I was dead.

I'm surprised between those and some incidents I'd rather not talk about that I'm not dead actually. I've confronted the idea a few times now, I'm past the fear of my own death. I've thought about the effect on others and come to terms with that too.
