I think a really good classic Zelda would have been huge and won the contest anyway (or maybe TW3 could win it 50.5-49.5) - BOTW being what it is just removed all doubt and took it to the next level. Skyward Sword was a bit of a whiff (out very late in Wii life cycle, motion controls, felt rather sparse and a little rough) so it'd basically been a decade since a really clean landing for a mainline Zelda. But for them BotW seems like the more natural choice, given how that game is maybe the first truly landmark Zelda to have come out after OoT, while MM was "only" a brilliant side-story.
