I never understood this attitude. You want people to realize what they've done try and repent for it, rather than doubling down. I'd rather be forgiving of people who know what they did was wrong now than finger-wagging and insisting that the only acceptable form of repentance is ritualistic suicide.

I think the problem is this mythological idea that the republican party was once pure and principled but that Trump has corrupted it and now all the republicans feel bad

This is 100% the logical next point of the direction the party has been heading for decades, any decent person would have gotten off this train before this

You're allowed to get off the train at any point. The guy in the interview is literally going "I was wrong" about so many things. About the Iraq War. About Climate Change. About Republicans need for minority outreach.

In a society where anything other than doubling or tripling down on your positions is considered weakness, taking the time to actually acknowledge your mistakes in the past is a good thing.

I'm still not going to shame them if they have seen the light and have started moving leftwards. I'll take any allies we can get.

(I haven't read the article yet so I don't know if he moved leftward or is just "republican ideas are good and just Trump is bad" to be fair)

Yes, but the people in the Q cult are going to see this as validation of their beliefs, and any responsible president would have understood that and said unequivocally that there was no truth to the conspiracy theory.

He said that he hadn't heard that those things were happening, which in Trump land is as close to hard no as you're going to get. It actually makes sense, given that Trump is perpetually involved in litigation. If he's a witness in a lawsuit, he doesn't have the foundation to say that the Q conspiracy doesn't exist. He doesn't have any personal knowledge of that. He can only say that he hasn't seen that it exists.

The QAnon conspiracy holds that Donald Trump is personally leading the charge against this nonexistent pedophile cabal, so he would in fact be able to conclusively say that at least a central pillar of it is false.

Do you mean "have they abandoned conservative values" then no I don't believe they have either. But conservatism and the GOP are not the same thing.

There's always going to be conservative positions in America. Less government, free trade, capitalism. And those are ideals you have to fight against for what you believe in. But the GOP literally stands for none of those things now.

Conservatism vs. liberalism or socialism vs capitalism are going to be debated until the end of existence. I'm not expecting Republicans to abandon actual conservative ideas, but the fact that they're finally willing to turn away from the baggage that was coming with it, and especially since even the ideals they believed in are getting tossed aside.

It's why I have several conservative friends that I don't run to with every Donald Trump quote to insist that they agree with it. Yes, we debate Universal Health Care. We debate the role of police in society. We debate taxes. And those are debates on merit. But when one of them tells me they regret voting for Trump, I'm not going to throw it in their face and insist "You haven't changed!" The ability to make a mistake and both acknowledge and remedy it is a good characteristic and shouldn't be throw back into people's faces.

"for the first time ever i'm not going to vote for the republican nominee but don't worry, OF COURSE i'm writing in some other republican with no empathy whatsoever for the poor!" uh, great? it's cool that these people realize that trump is terrible, i guess. but until they stop supporting assholes, i'm not sure why i should give a fuck.

It's because A) he wrote a book and B) he supposedly got the most Republicans elected ever.

And he's not just saying "I want to vote for someone with the same ideals." He's talking about how Trump doesn't represent any of his ideals.

This sort of makes sense, but I'd say there's a big difference between your friends and career Republicans. The latter group had more reasons to see this coming and more power to prevent it. It's good that they've changed their minds now, but that shouldn't mean we can't criticize them for making this possible in the first place.

The guy actively tried to prevent Trump by trying to convince local state politicians to get on the ballot in various states hoping they would take away enough votes in swing states to prevent him from being elected.

It's probably why you should actually read it. The interviewer doesn't pull any punches and calls him out on everything. He dodges and deflects on some stuff, but also is surprisingly candid in other moments about admitting where he was wrong and what he had done is wrong.
