In like 2025. But the point of doing it that way was to force the Democrats to the bargaining table to extend them permanently. Under budget reconciliation Republicans couldn't make all the tax cuts permanent, so they made the ones permanent that Democrats wouldn't agree to extend in the future.

It should've been much shorter

Also, imagine how much we could've cut taxes on the middle class if we didn't spend so much on the rich

Life in the US is too expensive as is, we need lower taxes so we can afford to have healthcare and pay for college.

I would support higher taxes for upper middle class people but I seriously doubt Biden wants to raise taxes for that group. Obama and HRC both promised that someone making 250k a year would not see their taxes go up and I doubt Biden would change that.

Until the Democrats are willing to start distributing gains to the working class, and I mean in a non-patronizing manner that acts as if working class people can't be trusted with actual money, no deal. No interest in taking from the rich to give to the middle class.

And the Democrats' refusal to countenance a payroll tax cut is the one of the worst things they've done. They insist on having working class people continue to pay into a ponzi scheme, while the rich and upper middle class are largely exempt (since most of their income is above the cap). They are basically saying that poor and working class people can be trusted so little with money that they'd do better investing in a ponzi scheme than handling their money on their own. Even if that were true, and I doubt that would be true in a majority of cases, it's incredibly insulting and also bad policy as people are never going to learn to invest if you tell them they can't do it and take all their money so you can put it into a ponzi scheme.

Most people didn't lose their jobs, and they need to be taken care of too. Plus, if the payroll tax had been abolished years ago those people who did lose their jobs would have savings now that they could use to stay afloat. The Democrats' responsibility for the payroll tax goes back 85 years. Blatant theft from the American People.

And sure, the Republican Party has been at times an accomplice. But the Democrats have definitely led the way on this, and now we finally have a President willing to take a stand.

Incidentally, LOTM, if you are on the University of California payroll, I think you are exempt from payroll tax. You pay into the UC pension fund instead, which is a fantastic pension program. Your payout on retirement is many times what social security would be for the same amount of money paid in. That's the power of a pension fund actually investing its money instead of running a ponzi scheme.

How much do you think payroll tax is?

Further, how capable do you think your average person is of being smart enough to actually put that towards investments or savings and not just buy more stuff because they have 6% more income?

"Oh sweet, I got $600"
*spends $600*

"Oh sweet, I got $636"

It's 7.6% from the employee and 7.6% from the employer. That's a total of 15.2%. 12.4% if you don't count the Medicare part. It's a much bigger percentage of take-home, after-tax income. For people living paycheck to paycheck, that is absolutely HUGE.

For a person who makes 50k a year, 12.4% a year is $6,200 a year. Over 10 years that's $62,000 if they just put the money in their mattress. If they bought treasury bonds steadily it would be maybe $75k now? If they bought SPY steadily it would be north of $120,000 I think. With 120k they could pay themselves $600 a week for 4 years.

Also, I will say this. In the US the government has told non-affluent people for 85 years that they can't save money, that they have no hope of succeeding in investing, that they should spend 100% of their paycheck immediately to "stimulate" the economy. Given this kind of messaging, it's not surprising that until this year we had a negative national savings rate. I want the government to send the same message, of encouraging savings and investment, to non-affluent people that affluent people teach their own children.

Also, the government can still run a state pension. Just run it the way every legitimate pension system is run, by investing money that's contributed.

There will of course, need to be a one-time payout to compensate people who have already paid into social security. As it was the country that started the scam in the first place, the country (the taxpayers through income tax) is the one that should pay for it. And you know what? Income tax is progressive. Richer people pay more.

Yeah, not sure about his strategy there. I think Trump has just accepted the inherent subjectivity of reality to such a high level that it's hard for him to even imagine the thought processes of people who believe in objective reality. So, I guess Trump isn't really lying - with his worldview, it is impossible for him to lie because objective facts do not exist. But it seems he would have more success just staying quiet and counting on evangelicals to vote against the Democrats on their own.
