Poll of the Day > What game were you looking forward to but when it came out it was terrible?

Star Raiders was one of my favorite games on the Atari 800, so when they announced a new version for the PC in 2011, I was super excited. But when it came out, it was absolute garbage. The controls were horrendous and I couldn't even make it past the tutorial. It's rated Mostly Negative on Steam, with only 20% positive reviews (and even most of those complain about the controls as well).

So what game were you looking forward to, only to be disappointed in when it finally came out?

I still love SA1 and 2, and people say '06 is bad because it's the same problems as SA1 and 2... I mean, I watched let's plays (grumps) of '06 and it has other problems...... but until I try it I think it's unfair to use SA1/2 as a downside

that is not why people say it's bad. granted, it does things from SA1 and 2 way worse, but people also point out the load times, terrible level design, glitches, and weird random playstyles.

MGSV

The gameplay wasn't bad, but the bad story, lack of meaningful cutscenes, and boring open world were depressing.

Assassin's Creed III

The Enzio story was amazing, and there have certainly been great ones since, this one just disappointed me and I found Conor to be very bland.

Legendary: The Box (we only got a fraction of what was promised, and it had a lot of issues)
Pokemon BW (terrible story for the campaign, worst first gym)
GTAIV (which sucked the fun out of the franchise)
Pokemon Go (which has consistently been a glitch-filled mess, with new bugs replacing old ones... and then old ones coming back)
Pokemon Coliseum games (tiny maps, battles drag on forever, purify mechanic was stupid)
Gauntlet (2014) (kinda neutered everything that made the older games fun)

If you mean the most recent Gauntlet, that wasn't a remake although it was certainly massively disappointing because they decided to go the Doom route instead of sticking with the more casual, fun mechanics the games were known for. And it was disappointing.

Plants vs Zombies 2.

What a terrible game. The first one is an all-time great.

-RE6 (currently playing, but I guess the fanboys were right about this game)

Again, they are not really 'terrible', but a big step down from the previous releases.

Anthem. Boy oh boy, did that one leave a bad taste.

Tony Hawk Ride. I loved the neversoft series and that was such a disappointing sequel that was almost nothing like the series before, granted it was a new developer.
That game was just so bad.

Majoras Mask. Loved Ocarina, it's a top 5 game for me all time. So I eagerly awaited MM's release, and I was just so underwhelmed. I hated the timer more than anything. I like to explore and take my time playing games like Zelda, and being constantly rushed otherwise being doomed to repeat four or five hours of work was just frustrating.

I also felt it was a much smaller game that was artificially extended by having to replay segments. There's like four dungeons compared to the dozen or so in OOT. And I also found the story to be significantly less compelling.

The Prince of Persia game that came out after the Sands of Time trilogy. It was a huge step back for the series in terms of both gameplay and plot. What's more, the story forces you to disregard the whole point of your journey at the end: you resurrect someone who sacrificed herself to save the world, but in doing so you plunge the world into darkness. It's somewhat similar to the ending of the first Last of Us, but in the Last of Us that ending is actually earned and feels like a logical progression of Joel's character. Prince of Persia is so forced that it's frustrating. I haven't played any games in the series since that one.

Too many to remember. I guess a few that hurt the most might be Pandora Tomorrow, Borderlands 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Halo 2, Breakpoint, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Lunar SSSC.

Black desert for sure. As someone who played what I'd consider the first generation 3D MMOARPGs (raiderz and tera), black desert was this mythical product that was going to come out and do everything right that these games did wrong bringing MMOARPGs out of their uncomfortable infancy. Instead, it was worse than either one, had zero pve content, and was designed to encourage making as many alts as physically possible. The core combat, while looking cool, was mechanically worse than it's predecessors.

Halo 3, then reach, then 4 also rate highly as disappointments. Halo 3 was still a great game but I was hoping for better than halo 2 and I found it to be 1 step fowrard, 2 steps back in a lot of areas.

Final fantasy 7 remake. It wasn't bad but was disappointing. By separating it out it was kind of like spreading not enough butter over too much toast. Also mgs5 for a lackluster story.

Angry Birds from Activision. I've enjoyed playing the game online but the 3DS version was a total sh.....w with its glitches, etc. It's between that and Pokemon X/Y since I expected X/Y to be of the same quality as far as story was concerned as B/W2, as well as postgame content.

Duke Nukem Forever. Was that an oof and a half or what?!

I loved Duke 3D on PC and even the watered-down N64 port, which had splitscreen MP that was pretty fun at the time. But yeah, I distinctly remember telling my buddy a week or two after it came out that I didn't like it. He was like "lol, I figured. You were all hyped before release then just went totally silent about it"

Real original, I know. But the disappointment was so strong with that game that I honestly don't even get very excited for many new video games anymore unless I am fully certain that the game will be good.

Anyone who knew about it saw it wasn't going to end well, but it was a small glimmer of hope that Square Enix acknowledged the Front Mission universe. A painful tease to remind anyone who gave a damn about Front Mission that that series is not going anywhere.

The first one is a truly underrated spookfest for it's time.

The second one missed literally everything about the first one that made it special by trying to be a knock off of Max Payne.

Neverwinter Nights (not terrible, but disappointing)

both of those releases were near each other and disillusioned me pretty hard. I try my best not to get hyped for anything after them.

Final Fantasy X-2 was the first final fantasy I really regretted buying (and pre-ordering).
Diablo III although not unplayable, it was a massive let down.
Costume Quest 2 (loved the first, but the second just didn't work for me).

I will give credit to Blizzard that Diablo 3 did eventually end up as a decent game, at least in comparison to what it was at launch.

i was so heartbroken when i realized 90% of the areas were a literal straight forward jog
took me years before i gave it a second chance and found some enjoyment in going after the all the side bosses and chocobo stuff
