It is designed to be an excellent starting point so while it has references to the other games it doesn't really require knowing anything from any of the other games. And because it's first in the time line it doesn't really have the ability to spoil anything, just foreshadow future events. The only other one that you can do as a "first in the series" is K1, but it is hard to really recommend it over 0. As it is a remake of the first game it obviously is completely stand alone, but it also really shows its age story-wise and it has changes that might feel a bit out of place without having played 0 (as they were added/changed to make the original in-line with 0's retcons). --- "A shouted order to do something of dubious morality with an unpredictable outcome? It's pretty much the game to start the series from, unless you plan on playing the original Yakuza and Yakuza 2, on PS2. 0's events don't get referenced to in 1 through 5, since it wasn't made before those games, but it does in the remakes (Kiwami and Kiwami 2), and in Yakuza 6. After playing 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2, starting 3 felt like a chore because you can really feel how dated that game is. But once you get passed through that, 3 is just as great as the others. I loved playing 0, K1 and K2 and then climbing up to 5, and seeing how much more polished the newer games are.
