An hour in so far (pretty much the intro).

The Dominant battle going on during the first scene was what started hooking me in. Later on, most of the important characters started filtering in. Clive is ok, but Elwin really had some cool charisma right off the bat. The obvious sexual undertones certainly change the dynamic for a Final Fantasy game. The chocobos and doggo were cute chocobos and doggos. The environments are pretty bog standard. Given the tone and setting, I suppose that's to be expected right now. Music had some neat flourishes, but nothing amazing just yet.

There's definitely stuff to like here. I'm certainly interested pretty quickly. I'll see how it holds up now that actual action starts.

I changed to control setting 2 after an hour for this exact reason.

It has dodge on circle and attacks on the triggers

Okay so I did this instantly but right before a boss lol. Dodging right but then not attacking when trying lol. Yeah gotta train a little.

I tried B and magic burst feels awful between r1 and r2. C though i'll try cus at least cjarging magic might be easier. And you can kinda get into the same flow for magic burst as Nero's Exceed.

Making more progress (the first real boss). From what I'm seeing, I'm getting a "Valkyrie Elysium visuals and tone + Ys dodging/evasion + FF7R Stagger System" feel, though with a lot more production value and oomph behind it. They probably will add so much more to this. Story seems very Ivalice-inspired medieval fantasy political intrigue (which I'm not big on), but VERY character driven, which is balancing it out a lot.

The Valkyrie Elysium comparison has more to do with setting and color scheme. This plays so much faster and tighter than that did. Hooray for an actual fucking budget and creative energy.

Played for a few hours tonight continuing from the demo up until the proper Garuda fight. Enjoying the pace so far! There was a bit where they mentioned clearing a barricade and I thought 'oh, here comes the padding already' and then they did it off screen and just carried on with the main quest.

So yeah, even if it ends up a little shorter because of it, happy for it just keep going like it is.

I am confused about ally commands. Is the optimal play really just to mash the control pad.

i equipped my first auto item for that just because that seems dumb

Having a pretty good time so far. Just got to the HIdeaway. Not super impressed with the story/world but the gameplay is great.

That first Eikon battle was...fucking amazing. These battle themes are really good too.

They dont really seem like theyre for racking up damage so much as starting combos. Use dogs ravage into rising flames for example

The Phoenix magic counter is so fucking powerful when you pull it off, hot damn.

Just go here and it's so obvious they cut whatever this was because decided it wasn't good, lol.

Oh also, I'm normally disappointed when preorder items and such become obsolete almost immediately, but goddamn was I happy when I finally got a sword that was as strong as Braveheart. Goofy-looking giant gold bejeweled monstrosity ruining my cutscenes.

Just realized that charge attack inputs are basically always being recorded. By which I mean even if you're being knocked down or are in the middle of a finisher animation, you can still be holding attack or magic to charge.

Thank goodness this game wrestles control away from me during its combat to show me cutscenes and make me do quick time events. Wouldnt want me cramping the games style

Holy shit the boss fight at the end of the keep all the way up to the end of the part that follows was just so good idk how this game is gonna go but I already got my money's worth

This game feels like a summer blockbuster movie. It's been a long time since I've engaged with something like it. Very fun. I can imagine some people might be annoyed by the cinematic stuff, but I'm here for it. Everything looks great.

I appreciate how the QTEs match the corresponding moves so you can often predict them before the prompt appears.

Yoshida you can't just put black cloaked figures with their hoods up and not expect me to start going paranoid for Ascians.

I really appreciate it when games do this. I want to say Tomb Raider Legend did it as well? But it should happen more often.

But you know, shoot, I think it actually is pretty successful in its goal. Im about 4 hours in but I think its the best looking game Ive ever played? Kind of crazy to be blown away by graphics in 2023 but here we are.

And I think it also succeeded in making me care about the protagonist which I was concerned about after the last few FFs

Is it weird I think the graphic are almost too good? They've been parts that have felt uncanny valleyed to me which has never happened to me in a game before

I feel like the combat is already frantic and fluid enough to feel cinematic on its own. The qtes cheapen that a bit. I aint here to watch a movie.

I definitely agree with this. Clive, Cid, and Torgal are all instantly likeable. Which is really dangerous lol. I got really nervous when they started getting beat up and bloody in the benedikta fight

Honestly wed all better be careful, and not google anything about this game until you finish it. This is gonna be like game of thrones, where if you google any characters name, the recommendation will say character name death scene

Id stay off social media as much as possible too

Just beat the Benedikta fight. Man that was hype. I have to disagree on the QTEs even though I usually don't like them. I also like that you get to use the stagger before they start and sometimes you even get another one after (at least so far). I hated in FF7R when you would break the gauge, a cutscene would play, and then it was back to the normal battle

It doesnt have to be. But id much rather these fights be won through my own skill and mastery of the game, rather than oh yeah, i know where the square button is on a playstation controller!

I disagree. I feel like the graphics are good, but there's lots of inconsistency. I had that uncanny valley feeling with Horizon FW though.

Yeah, the characters here look like characters, in a good way. Agree that Horizon 2 is a good example of a game looking so good that it looks bad.

Directly comparing it to the opening of FFXV is such a joke. My first 10 hours with that game was nothing but pain and suffering, a cavalcade of boredom and molasses.

Okay, so first time going to Lostwing is a legit bad/boring stretch of game but it definitely picks up right after it. Feels like this game might be just like FF7 Remake in that there are sections here that are blatantly filler / feel like an entirely different videogame.

I dont think anything in XV ever advanced far from what i would describe as boredom. I'm maybe like 10 hours into XVI and this is basically a far better game by default.

If the game didn't focus on Ardyn or Aranea, XV was kinda bleh.

I felt like XV had something special and it just never executed

The characters were likable but not unique
The story was great but so cryptic that it was impossible to understand what was going on
The combat was interesting but monotonous with so many terrible side quests

XV really could use a remake because it has a core of a good game that never got there on any axis

XV without the open world bullshit (and a more fleshed out Insomnia, Lestallum, and especially Altisshia and Tenebrae) would have made for an intriguing game.
