Jill is underwhelming compared to clive, cid, and torgal, but shes cool enough for a FF character. Shes the dominant of shiva, she gives clive good pep talks, shes got a cool design. I always felt like most FF characters can usually squeak by on rule of cool Lulu, Amarant, Irvine etc

Im about 8-9 hours in, at Moore, and can someone whos later on tell me vaguely if they ever explain why Bearers became hated so much, besides just they can do magic and thats dangerous? Why did the Bearers end up subjugated instead of as the subjugators? Is it just that they turn into rocks, so they arent strong enough? Did they already cover this and I just missed it?

I agree kinda but I also think as the main girl she's expected to get a little more characterization. I played all day and just got to the new hideout which I'm guessing is maybe like 20% done? (I have no idea this is a complete shot in the dark). But based off a similar hour count I think Yuna for example was already characterized better and started her character growth arc whereas Jill is basically still the same as I found her and I still don't really know much about her past or her motivations beyond "help Clive" let alone any inkling of development. That said it's not like I dislike her...I just wish they'd used her better so far. But there's still time for her to grow on me so I'm not counting her out yet

The Titan fight sure is a spectacle

Less DBZ like the Typhon fight and more attack on titan with a pinch of fist of the north star at the end

Jill does have a story. She even channels Kratos pretty hard once she has to face her past directly. But she often doesn't get as much development as Clive and threatens to blend into his character.

Jill definitely gets her moments.

This is the most stylish game Ive played since Persona 5.

I put a lot of weight on unique and interesting experiences when ranking games and if this holds up another 30 hours its going to top Tears of the kingdom for GotY for me.

It's nostalgic having a Zelda vs Final Fantasy year.

I just noticed the scarecrows are Black mages lol. Nice.

I was really happy to get the chocobo to ride on for faster travel but I find that unless you skip encounters it's not that useful.

So far ff16 doesnt come anywhere close to Totk lol.

Go fight a gleeok in totk, then fight an eikon in ff16. Totk requires cunning, creativity, and skill, while ff16 leans heavily on style over substance. Like, totk has all these robust systems in place for the player to go crazy with, while ff16s rpg systems are all very surface level.

Dont get me wrong - FF16 is pretty great, and im enjoying it but be real.

TotK is an open world game and plays like BotW which was also bad so it loses by default.

And that is the last time I will mention Zelda in this topic lol.

I'll just say I've already put more hours into FF16 that I have TotK XD

I dont think Ive had to rotate a single object in FF16. Loving that

XVI definitely has a better story. But again, they focus differently so it's hard to compare directly and is a matter of what you prefer. It's close for me so far. We'll see where it ends.

The only year where they're truly head to head and it's a battle of total mediocrity.

So...people give a shit whatever game wins a fancy award now? If the games are good in their own way, that should be enough.

Note: I prefer 2D to 3D Zelda, and the durability and stamina system have scared me off playing BotW and ToTK, but to each their own if they enjoy it.

Nobodys talking about the game awards guys lol. Game of the year is just fun to talk about in general - and it is absolutely valid to compare games of different genres in that regard.

Im a 10 for TOTK personally. Its literally a game where you invent your own game mechanics and your own solutions to problems. I literally froze a piece of meat to my shield, stuck a beehive to a stick, and went around sliding on my shield and sending bee swarms after my enemies. Every little thing about that game blows my mind.

So for me personally, its gonna be an uphill battle for FF16 to get on that level, but well see with more enemy variety and combo potential

Yeah, may be best to leave the comparison for another topic. And after people have actually finished XVI, for that matter.

Okay actual. Some of the battles are way too long and repetitive.

In particular the battles where you play as Ifrit. It's frustrating that they take like half an hour. Like, I just did the Titan battle. 3 different forms that all needs to be staggered like thrice. While it's all cinematic and pretty looking it's distracting for the pleasure how long these take when gameplay various so little. They should have cut it's HP in at least half every time. I kept hoping I'd get some cinematic phase that did loads of the damage. I was actually really into the story getting there but it was a huge distraction.

This will hardly be the last too but at least it's somewhat obvious when they come.

They could have cut at least one of the platform phases and I also thought it would end after you shoved the spire right down the middle. I groaned when you had to do one more fight while falling down inside the giant body XD

So, about halfway through. Trying to weigh this with the other mainline games I've played:

10 > 6 > 9 > 7 > 4 > 5 > 16 > 8 > 1 > 15 > 13 > 12 > 3 > 2

While I'm not keen on this game's combat, the story, characters, and music really grab me. I'm absorbed into this narrative in a way I haven't for a while. It's still a good experience. If I'm weighing 16, 8, and 1, I will say 8 probably has better highs (a really solid musical score). However, the weirdness of the story cannot be redeemed, no matter how many Laguna segments you give me. 1 just exists as "a milestone." It exists as a game you can endlessly replay and try new options, but it's not something I would ever go back to all that often. I don't find those early games all that enjoyable until 4.

I'm a big story/character driven person, hence why I'd even put 8 over 1. 16 has no really stupid moments (yet). It's just relentlessly dour and that's kind of the point. 8 has this infectious stupid energy...but god Disc 2 and Disc 3 are really, really, really dumb.

Unironically, open up and clean your PS5. Have heard of this before because the PS5 was overheating internally. The way the PS5 is you should really be doing this multiple times a year, unfortunately.

It must have been something wrong with the autosave. I loaded up an earlier autosave, skipped all the CSes to get to that point and it worked fine

Man, that's unlucky. I haven't heard about it as an issue before.

I've been having a lot of fun with this game. A bit more than 50% through and I'm definitely enjoying this more than TotK for what it's worth.

Completely different games but I value story, plot and characters these days so it's a bit of a no brainer.

Also I don't mind the long battles! Gameplay, for the most part, has been quite enjoyable!

Yeah exactly. At that point I was just tired of it. Maybe if they had cut each part with about 50% it would not be. The problem is also that even if you enjoy it for the cinematics, the phases are each three identical cinematic experiences basically.

I'm glad to hear it's the longest one. And also pleased that they didn't have it when you got Titan, that would have been too much lol.
