The best case scenario for the Dems would be for Jordan to barely miss the votes necessary while a load of swing district Republicans voted for him, and then November is all about Trump criminality and Gym Jordan getting votes from battleground reps to drive out the Dem votes and poison the GOP well for the inane undecideds.

And yes, I think him not winning would be better, as a massive shutdown would tank the country and probably somehow get cut both ways.

---
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

I really do hope what few "moderate" Reps are left...or the ones from swing districts, rather... eventually work w/ Dems for some sort of power sharing agreement or a moderate Rep that has rules set upon him so he can't then ignore the Dems that got him into power.

The constant 212 for Jeffries is funny and all, but sadly we do need a Speaker and no Reps are voting D.

And yes, I know this is Republicans' fault and it shouldn't be up to Dems to fix. But the bottom line is we need a functional Congress to avoid/end a shutdown, and all of this is cutting into Biden's time in office to actually do anything.
The right wing is cool w/ Gym as speaker or no speaker (functionally the same thing) b/c they want a long shutdown and to keep Biden from being able to do anything.

There's no chance for a power sharing agreement. That'd kill any any Republican that voted for it politically.

The best hope is that there are a dozen or so reps that figure that supporting Jordan is a bigger threat to their reelection chances in purple or even blue districts than Fox News being mad at them and somehow finding a compromise Republican, even one not currently in the House.

The bottom line is if we want a functional government people need to stop voting R

a non functioning government has been the goal of republicans for decades. What we are seeing is the endgame

If a rep in a swing district votes for Gym, he gets ousted in the general election.
If he works w/ Dems for a moderate Rep or power share agreement, he gets primaried (by a right-wing nutjob, who then loses the general).

If I'm a swing district Rep, I'd take my chances w/ the primary over the general. Primaries are like ~ 6 months away (varies by state)? Full year till the general. Less time for someone to mount a campaign against me, the incumbent, successfully.

I mean, they're kinda damned either way. I think trying to remain electable (and using that argument to get RNC money to fend off the psycho MAGA in the primary) would be the safer route...

Truth be told, speaking as a former Republican in a former Republican area of an otherwise safe blue state, if I was a Rep incumbent in a swing district, I'd be reaching out to retired ex House members that hopefully served in other positions, like the Senate, Cabinet, or as a governor, and see if they were interested in being put forward as a compromise temporary speaker for 2024 and then use that as ammo to try to keep the anti-Jordan bloc together. Then try to get the message out that my interest is in not selecting a permanent leader with a narrow majority mid-cycle but rather to make a permanent choice after 2024 with the hope (as in their hope) that the GOP retained the House.

Realistic? Probably not. But better than the alternatives in my head.

This is an interesting hit of history here. Every outcome is terrible in a way, but right now the worst one is most likely to happen. That is, Jim Jordan becoming speaker.

I only hope the GOP mess this up. It's possible, but I doubt we'll be that lucky and I don't think anyone else can get the votes.
