The write-ups will be formatted as follows:

#Rank 120-1. Name of Song
Artist: Name of Artist or Band
Nomination: Name (Rank/Amount)
Time: Length of Song or Video
Link: Link to Song
Rankings: Various Methods Used for Placement

First listen note - Some songs I jotted down a first impression on. I didn't do this as much when I switched to listening at work, but may have hand-written notes I'll need to double-check. If I've already ranked something and I find old notes I didn't have in the write-up, I'll post the next time I'm able.

On the subject of rankings, here are the ranking types I've done thus far.

Ranking Types

1. Batch Rankings
- These were my initial rankings in order of listen, and aside from one mis-input in order of nomination. There are eight Batches of fifteen songs each, or about every three sets of nominations. This gave an initial impression, some framework of how I'd rank a nominator's songs, kept things close and fresh so I wouldn't be in the weeds for months re-re-relistening to songs nominated later on against songs I'd forgotten early on; fifteen is a solid number for a nice basic feeling out. I also graded the songs in the rankings so I could get a visual of how they'd likely range down the line; some batches had lots of low, some had lots of high, a few had neither high or low at all. Batches were ranked between 12/6 and 12/29.

2. Rubric Ranking
- This was a semi-casual ranking when I was listening at work. It's not perfect as there were interruptions, but I was much less prone to be distracted by video games, television, books, phone, etc. and it kept me sane through the extra helpings of paperwork I've been doing and filing. The rubric was a 4x4 grid where I'd insert a song based on how much I liked it and relative to other songs already placed. I listened to the playlist on random (aside from four that could not be playlisted - Crash Into Me, Cool Cat, Winter Wrap-Up, and Pohjalan), and it ended up moving a lot of things around especially in the middle. I enjoyed it so much that I've done a few more than won't be marked up as only the initial one was done in a single sitting. The lower the number, the higher the rank--
- 1 being the best
- 2-4 being extremely high
- 5-6 are great and assuredly top half
- 7-8 are good and likely top half, but could fall below depending on further listens and competition
- 9-10 are okay and likely bottom half, but are poised to rise depending on further listens and competition
- 11-12 are meh and likely bottom half
- 13-15 are varying levels of bad, dull, and/or annoying
- 16 greatly annoyed me and terrible

The thing is after I first started doing write-ups (before my document got corrupted and I lost all my write-ups for Rubric 16) and gave the bottom five a more thorough and critical listen... I found myself pushing a few of them out of this bottom tier. They're still low, but I definitely needed to try a third method of weeding out the worst.

3. Weighted Rankings
- I ranked the bottom two lines of the batches against each other, then the next two lines, then the next two, and so on. As of this writing, I have not ranked the top three lines knowing that all twenty-four of them are making the top half; there are some batches where 4th place will definitely be in the bottom half. I'll be relying heavily upon these for a while, likely until I get half the rankings done. I've coded them Red->Orange->Yellow->Green->Blue->Purple->Pink from worst to best. So, for example, something was ranked 8/15 in its batch, it'll be grouped as Green and ranked against other 8s & 9s. I anticipate these rankings to deviate very little from my actual rankings.

4. Blockbuster
- These will show up after this first tier is published. There were about forty-to-sixty songs floating that were very slippery to rank. Some of these were initally written off early as bad, but continued to grow in strength and made comparing songs around it difficult because they were actually higher. Some were ranked high among their batches, but that meant little when some batches were worse than others. Most are just waiting to be cut, sometimes reaching a rung or two higher than another song, some just being better or worse than expected on a given day, some just being forgotten instantly even if played five times in a row.

The Blockbuster is my first satisfactory and successful ranking of these songs. The first part was cutting it down to a more manageable size from 50 to 41 by excising 9 songs that I clearly favored far more than the rest over the past few weeks. I put forty of the remaining songs into five grids of eight, shaking them up enough so everything was fairly separated from their usual neighbors. After playing the songs, I gave each song a binary Yes/No if it was better than the other seven songs in its Grid (Grids A-E, #s representing amount of "Yes" i.e. a 7 means it was better than all other songs in its grid, a 0 means none of the other songs). I reduced again, separating out the best four of each grid, then set the remaining twenty in three new grids at complete random also adding a song that initially got a bye because it's a Cheshire Cat that keeps escaping execution!! These are Grids X, Y, & Z and the lowest are ranked against each other and ultimately cut. Each grid had at least one pair of songs I couldn't say was better or worse than the other at the time. They will be judged on their lowest level of their respective grids. Grid X-3.4, for instance, denotes a song that tied and has three yesses and a possible fourth.

Any guesses for the first five songs out?

I have low expectations for my list. Instead of trying to cater to you, I nominated: The three songs I listened to the most in 2023, a song I was nostalgic for at that exact moment, and a wild card pick. (If you're really bored, try guessing which song is which)

There are enough songs I haven't heard on the nomination list that I can't predict much. I feel fairly confident in which of my songs is last--my second most listened to song of 2023, which shall remain nameless for now--but... I'll avoid being pessimistic and see what happens instead of predicting an actual placement.

I was gonna start, but my computer is being a complete butt, even after restarting and clearing history.

So keep guessing! The bottom 25 are set in and won't be influenced, and hearing Snake's opinion has been fun so far!

You can go for the top five, too, since I have an idea of what those are, but spoiler tag in case I don't want to see them yet.

I have no idea what your taste in music might be so I'll be a pessimist and guess that A Tap Dancer's Dilemma might be pretty far down there because it's the weirdest thing I nominated and I can see it falling really flat if you're not into the weirder stuff.

First five songs coming right up! No one guessed them right!

=====I DISAGREE=====

This is a tier of songs that I maintained dislike for one reason or another. There were a whole set of songs that started off here, but grew over repeated listens and attempts at write-ups, and these just stuck to the bottom like muck. The best thing I can say about this tier is that it was easy to write-up and to rank. There are roughly fortyish songs after this tier that have been horrendous to rank against each other and write-up. These had the decency of just being unredemptive. I thank them for their sacrifice.

#120. Cherry Chapstick
Artist: Yo La Tengo
Nomination: tazzyboyishere (5/5)
Time: 6:12
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSov0dYA2ho
Initial Rankings: Batch 2 - 14/15 (F) & Rubric 15
Weighted Rankings: Red 16/16

There are a few other songs that could've slid into the bottom spot, but this one takes it because it just annoys me more and more with each listen. It starts off well enough! The first minute or so might hop twenty or so spots to another tier of okay but forgettable songs. There'd still be some wariness with the strangled guitars and heavy muffle of sound the voice gets lost in, and then the whole thing becomes a tangled, chaotic, corrupted, whining mess. It picks back up and there's hope, but it'll do it again later and I just really dislike it. I don't care what the song is about. It disappoints and annoys and aggravates and I am happy to remove it immediately from any future listens.

.

#119. The Art of Solemn Enmity
Artist: Gorguts
Nomination: rwlh (5/5)
Time: 4:20
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1z2OlRFeZtQ
Initial Rankings: Batch 2 - 15/15 (F) & Rubric 15
Weighted Rankings: Red 15/16

"Metal." - First listen note

The Art of Solemn Enmity's being worse throughout the entire song puts it above Cherry Chapstick because it's brash and awful from start to finish instead of teasing something that could pass as okay from the start. It's a wall of noise and hoarse screaming. Death metal is definitely not my genre. There is the art of loving, the art of forgetting, and the art of solemn enmity. Which this definitely is. A resigned disdain.

.

#118. Anywhere Is
Artist: Enya
Nomination: ZaziGuado (5/5)
Time: 3:45
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ98IJ0usoE
Initial Rankings: Batch 5 - 13/15 (D-) & Rubric 16
Weighted Rankings: Orange 16/16

I don't listen to enough Enya to know if all her music sounds like "Only Time," but this is like teasing "Only Time" but just looping the same bah-bah-bah-bah-ba-BAH, bah-bah-buh-buh-buh-bo-bah over and over. I remember in The Mole's second season that "Tiny Bubbles" on loop was used as a form of torture for a contestant; I imagine "Anywhere Is" being a hundred times worse. I cannot listen to this again. I do not want 'emotion on the ocean' becoming a kernel lodged in my brain that'll pop someday into an aneurysm. I can at the very, very least appreciate the messaging, but the delivery is one repetitive, fake-ending direction, no matter this or that way.

.

#117. Atlas Earth Ad Song
Nomination: paulg235 (5/5)
Time: 0:30
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPcnj2q1EDw
Initial Rankings: Batch 3 - 15/15 (F) & Rubric 16
Weighted Rankings: Red 14/16

"Why" - First listen note

I-I-I-I just can't believe I didn't it rank it first! Now I'm facing backlash with all readers; got virtually no reason it's ranked so low, ranked so low. This list is derisible, should I give up? The blow up is visible, fall a couple more, watch my topic dry up, it's about to go nuts, about to go nuts.

Now I'm being sarcastic about Atlas Earth. It's bad. And catchy. I removed "Anywhere Is" before it became an earworm, but this was a Yeerk wrapped in my brainfolds from the first moment I heard it. Twenty years from now this song will trigger and I'll feel resigned shame.

There are a few bright spots, however, with first and foremost being the thirty second length. That alone keeps it out of last place, unlike how Cherry Chapstick somehow goes for six minutes. Another is how much a comment on this video is so right about this being a great artifact of 2019-2020: scammy game ads, terrible Tiktok filters, NFT delusions, auto-tuned to hell. Also, his excitement about being able to pay rent when his income is going up a fraction of a fraction of cent... yeaaaah. There is some schadenfreude.

It still sucks though.

.

#116. Sexy Sexy
Artist: Cascade
Nomination: handsomeboy2012 (3/3)
Time: 4:00
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA3-eUekq5k
Initial Rankings: Batch 5 - 15/15 (F) & Rubric 16
Weighted Rankings: Red 13/16

I'm struggling to say exactly it is I don't like. I don't like the singer's voice, I don't like the music, I can't unhear the Buster Bunny tongue strumming in the background, I don't like the 'shexy shexy' or 'i need you i need you.' One random note, and this is almost assuredly a broken pathway in my brain, is that it made me think of Tunak Tunak Tun when Daler Mehndi's gods are dancing toward and back from the camera. Happened multiple listens. But now that I've watched Tunak Tunak Tun for the first time in a few months and tried to pinpoint where in the song I was thinking, it's disappeared. I think my brain was reaching out to something I enjoyed to spare me from this.

This felt like it was on the edge of transitioning into a good Foo Fighters song.... but instead of going over it somehow managed to hover on that edge the entire song.

I won't comment on everything, but I'll follow along and chime in occasionally.

Cherry Chapstick: I kinda like this one, though not as much as I thought I might. I tend to like songs described as "tangled, chaotic, corrupted, [and/or] whining" so I had some hopes for this, but it just slightly misses the mark. I rather dig the melodic opening, but the softness of the vocals loses me. I'd prefer this either as an instrumental or if they raised the volume of the vocals so that the singer doesn't get so lost in the sound.

The distorted breakdown is pretty nice the first time, but it feels like the song just aimlessly repeats itself after that and I got a bit bored by the outro/second breakdown. Still, I do kinda like it and will try to check out more of their work in the future; I find their sound promising enough that I suspect there's something I'd really like.

-

The Art of Solemn Enmity: Umm... the video is called "The Art of Sombre Ecstasy" and I'm unsure if that means the wrong link was posted or the title is wrong or whatever. Though I can't find any trace of anything called The Art of Solemn Enmity, so I'm guessing it's an oddly typo'd title.

The song itself is... fine, I suppose? I don't hate death metal, but I don't hear anything that sets it apart from other songs in the genre. They play a lot of drums, growl for a bit, and leave. I wouldn't say I dislike it, but... it's fine.

-

Don't really have anything of interest to say about the other three songs.

Complete agreement. Thinking on it, it reminds me of R.E.M's Monster album where it's just fuzzy. Where it would be nicer if the sound mixing was better and the vocals didn't get lost in the wall of sound. Like those topics or videos or essays on how the 'loudness' of a lot of CDs/song releases at the time where everything is turned towards maximum volume, which ends up causing everything to blend and blur.

That's on me. It's the right link and right song, but I've continually mistyped and misthought the title since I started. I know I corrected it a few times early on, and it's Sombre on my main sheet, but I haven't even noticed I keep putting Solemn down everywhere else.

It might a Freudian slip because my enmity for the song is much more solemn and disappointed and resigned than sombre and guilty and depressed.

YLT mixes nose with the soft vocals pretty frequently. Some of their early work has the singer going a bit wilder, but it's commonly seen as some of their weaker stuff, even though it's all still quite good. They also excel at quieter songs since both vocalists have pretty soothing voices, but I really enjoy the dichotomy in their noisier output.

Cherry Chapstick is a personal favorite, but if anyone is interested in checking out some of their other work, their more well acclaimed songs include Sugarcube, Tom Courtenay, You Can Have It All, Blue Line Swinger, Autumn Sweater, and probably a host of others that fans would yell at me for not listing. The album 'I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One' also happens to be my favorite studio album OF ALL TIME. I love Yo La Tengo.

Oh man that's a bummer you couldn't get down with Anywhere Is. I like how bouncy it is, but I can understand how the cadence and styling of the lyrics could be off-putting. I think I was surprised the first time I heard it because like you I only knew of Only Time and Anywhere Is a much poppier, peppier sound, so it stuck with me. A lot of Enya's music does the layering that you would find on Only Time, so there's probably some hidden gems for you somewhere should you ever choose to look for them.

There's one other way I can see this hint going, with it being a bit misleading: Jason Mraz has a hit song named "The Remedy" which is completely unrelated to the Abandoned Pools song that I nominated. It's a "big name" song in that it shares a name with a big song.

Writeup will be a quick comment about how Mega Mana wishes I'd nominated the Jason Mraz song & disappointment about what it is. The song list doesn't list artist names so that anyone who just skims the song names will also be surprised when it turns out to be an unrelated song.

That... kinda seems to work out perfectly in my mind.

It's too damn catchy to be in last. It's also thirty seconds long which helps it a lot if you were going for worst song.

Only posting three right now because there's just six until the next tier.

#115. This Is It
Artist: Nekrogoblikon
Nomination: Murpiroth (5/5)
Time: 4:00 (video is 4:51, but it's an end skit)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAf1j3u8i-M
Initial Rankings: Batch 7 - 12/15 (D) & Rubric 14
Weighted Rankings: Orange 15/16

"All the things she said running through my head" - First listen note

This is its time. I've had enough of it. If I were ranking based off first impressions alone, this easily could've made the top hundred, but it's one of the biggest drops on repeats. The goblin vocals are grating and the chorus is annoying. The final barrage of sound is actually pretty good, but the band gets killed off and that's it. "This is my time! It's not your time, this is my ti-i-i-me!" There are certain immature people with some power who resonate with this chorus, offering nothing but sound and air demanding attention but offering nothing but an attention-sucking demand.

.

And now for something completely different...

#114. Idioteque
Artist: Radiohead
Nomination: MaxGalactica (5/5)
Time: 5:09
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svwJTnZOaco
Initial Rankings: Batch 6 - 15/15 (D) & Rubric 15
Weighted Rankings: Red 12/16

I don't get it. I don't. I don't get Radiohead, I don't get Karma Police, I don't get Idioteque. I listened to Radiohead's first two albums a few months ago, maybe a week or two before opening up nominations, and there wasn't a song I actively enjoyed. I don't understand Pitchfork and Rolling Stone saying it's one of the best songs of the century so far, I don't relate to the comments section talking about how transformative it was or how it helps calm mental anguish and disorder or how it reminds them (with postivity) for thousands of nights trying to sleep staring up at the ceiling. I just don't.

And while that's okay, I also can't ignore that it makes me feel a bit angry that I'm missing something other people get. But again, different people, different tastes, different flavors. Radiohead has never been my flavor and I don't begrudge anyone for finding them incredible.

I was hoping by now I'd get it, but nothing's changed. It's just a void.

Update: "Paranoid Android," "Karma Police," "Fake Plastic Trees," "Exit Music (For A Film)"... yeah, I just don't get Radiohead. *shrug*

Update Update (2/1): Even though Radiohead's Creep of '93 is good, the Stone Temple Pilots Creep of '92 & TLC's Creep of '94 are better than it, IMHO. I came to comment on a Radiohead song that popped on my Spotify yesterday, but thinking it was on 2007's In Rainbows I couldn't find it. Turns out it was "High and Dry" from The Bends. I expect I'll continue to return to Radiohead updates over the next year because of this nomination, lol.

Meta-Update (2/2): Go back to the beginning of this write-up. "And now for something completely different" was there when I first wrote this up about three weeks ago! I had NO idea people would be guessing the exit of Brian, and it's delivered me a good round of laughs for the coincidence!

#113. 0314
Artist: Koyoi
Nomination: UF8 (5/5)
Time: 2:43
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQqmiz_w3Y0
Initial Rankings: Batch 4 - 15/15 (D) & Rubric 13
Weighted Rankings: Red 10/16

It's been a week, and I've spent more time listening to Radiohead than on these rankings. Part of that is that I listened to more Poppy, Taylor Swift, 5 Seconds of Summer, and podcasts than anything, but the two Radiohead albums had more play the dozen of low-ranking songs I had in this area. And despite putting this and a few songs below "Idioteque" a few days back and trying to give Radiohead some measure of respect, listening to them all fresh again... yeah, I can't put this below it.

You can see I don't have much to say on this entry. It's a somewhat forgettable track. It's decent, but between not understanding the language and it fading out suddenly, I struggle to recall how it sounds as soon as it ends. It does get a bit annoying in the final minute and it doesn't vary its frenetic tempo at all. An okay wall of sound.

Aw no Radiohead! To your credit Kid A is held in higher regard by others than it is for me but I still do love me Radiohead, Ok Computer, In Rainbows and A Moon Shaped Pool are all my top tier Radiohead albums. You said you listened to their first two, Street Spirit (Fade Out) didn't do anything for you either? That's one of my favorite songs from them.

Yeah that sounds about right for Nekrogoblikon, the goblin vocals are definitely not for everyone.

The goblin is not savvy. He could've really done something after that fateful accident. Here's a nomination from MysticBrohan back in 2014 showing how it should be done.

Rip Idioteque. Although I totally understand someone not liking as it is super unconventional. And Thom Yorkes voice is pretty divisive by itself, so I also get not liking Radiohead in general. However Idioteque is one of those songs that sends me to another dimension every time I hear it. Not sure if its my favorite Radiohead song in general, but its at least top 3.

"This Is It": So not the unrelated Kenny Loggins song. I want 10% credit for calling the next song being one that shares a name with a more well-known song, even if literally everything else in that prediction was wrong. <./<

Aaanywho, I do love a few Nekrogoblikon songs, but this is ironically not it. The sheer number of times he repeats "this is it" in the lyrics kinda kills my interest... it's not terrible and I did giggle at the closing skit, but as someone who still loves their song "Darkness", this was disappointing.

-

Idioteque: I don't get it either. It does have some nice, deep, resonate tones that I like at least.

-

0314: The lyrics tell a good story, but I'm not sold on the song itself. Would need to listen a few more times to work out how I feel about it.

#112. Both Sides Now
Artist: Carly Rae Jepsen
Nomination: CoolCly (5/5)
Time: 3:52
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0taUegvsFSQ
Initial Rankings: Batch 7 - 14/15 (F) & Rubric 15
Weighted Rankings: Red 9/16

I've looked at its bordering entries from both sides now and I'm comfortable with its low placement. I thought it would be lower, but it can actually thank "Anywhere Is" for how truly annoying and cloying a song can be that this sounds leagues better. It's not a good song, and yet I like it more than "Idioteque" somehow (I've tried more with that song than in any other ranking, I swear).

#111. Main Theme (Towering Inferno)
Artist: John Williams
Nomination: Redrocket (5/5)
Time: 5:03

Initial Rankings: Batch 7 - 13/15 (D-) & Rubric 14

"Adventuresome." - First listen note

It sounds like a mess. It starts off harrowing then turns into a sea adventure where we meet the cast of a fancy Gilligan's Island before trumpeting to triumph on an epic voyage to the stars with the pleasant violins. Next it sweeps up into romance, then betrayal! The xylophones are odd and it keeps going around something big city bombastic or militarily tense or the start of an old Disney live-action movie about an absent-minded professor or an ugly dachschund... This feels like it goes through more genre changes than Too Many Cooks. It feels like a collection of motifs and stings collapsed together. If they took all the character themes from Lost and mashed them into fifteen-second clips one after another, this is what that would sound like. It's herky-jerky. There are a lot of portions I would like to hear on their own, but not in this big dagwood sandwich.

.

#110. Dragonsong (FFXIV: Heavensward)
Artist: Nobuo Uematsu
Nomination: CoolCly (4/5)
Time: 5:45
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtuwltmTp9I
Initial Rankings: Batch 7 - 11/15 (D) & Rubric 13
Weighted Rankings: Yellow 16/16

Dragonsong does nothing for me. It doesn't sweep me up, it doesn't grab my attention, it doesn't make me say, "Oh, isn't this amazing? It's my favorite part because you'll see; here's where she meets Prince Charming, but she won't discover that it's him 'til chapter three." Okay, for some reason it doesn't invoke a bit of Beauty and the Beast as well as Snake Eater, on top of the obvious Final Fantasy, but it's just a nothing song for me. First second song to drop by a nominator, though! That's... a note.

And that's it for the bottom tier!

Like "This Is It", all three of these tracks are ones that I wish I enjoyed more than I actually do.

"Both Sides Now" has a decent backing music track. It is very pulsing and dance music-y, but in a rather restrained way. It's very "let's headbang and rock out, but at a respectable level where we don't hurt ourselves or bother the neighbors!" dance-y and I could see myself getting into that. I've never been super into the most well-known performance of the song, but I've always thought it had some very nice lyrics about the contrast between beautiful illusions and harsh reality, so I'm certainly open to the idea of someone else covering the song. And I like Carly Rae, so I was pretty amped up to listen to her take on the song. But... it just doesn't work for me; the backing music, while not exactly *intense*, is still ramped up and thumping for the quiet reflection the lyrics demand. It's a tonal mismatch that I'm having a hard time getting past.

And why, why, why does she go back to singing about clouds at the end of the song? It actively kills the song's pacing. The flow goes "the nature of something specific", "the nature of an emotion", "the nature of life itself". Going back to 'that one specific thing I was talking about at the beginning' doesn't work.

=

Towering Inferno, I like the last parts of it, say from around 4:11 until the end. I quite like the way the instruments pick up right at that moment and then the song quickly transitions into a real sense of adventure; lots of cautious optimism mixed with trepidation & I dare say these last 40 to 50 seconds or so has been the highlight of all songs ranked thus far! I... uhh.... shall politely refrain from commenting on the earlier parts of the track.

=

Dragonsong, I don't get why I'm not into it. I like the way the piano feels, I like the power in the singer's voice, I like the bleakness of the lyrics:

"Alone for eternity
A pain without cease"

Yessss~, there's that blunt pain that I crave in music. And yet... I don't know. How can I like every aspect of the song and not be into the end result? It vexes me, to be quite honest. The closest I can guess is that the song feels too bombastic to properly compliment the tragedy? Maybe? I've listened to it twice and I don't really get it. I'm glad that I don't have to try to assign any rankings or scores to this song because I just don't know what to make of it. I definitely like it more than you do, in that I'd at least put it in the "kinda like" section but it feels like I should like this so much more.

=====KNOCKOFF=====

This tier starts the Blockbuster Ranking set. Everything here can rank over other songs of its tier on a good day or a good listen, or under if I'm not feeling them, and have been so difficult to rank.

#109. Falling
Artist: John Frusciante
Nomination: Blur (5/5)
Time: 4:46
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjUYr5RN6cM
Initial Rankings: Batch 8 - 15/15 (D+) & Rubric 12
Weighted Rankings: Red 5/16
Blockbuster: Grids B-0, X-0

Today might be a day where I don't like lyricless songs, but that takes nothing away from being my least liked of them among this tier. The first time I heard it, I was weirded out by its backward-sounding rhythms. The second time, I thought it was okay. Nothing great, but surely it wasn't this far down. The more I listen to it, the less it impacts anything. There's nothing to latch onto, it just continues to be slightly mysterious its entire run.

.

#108.
Artist:
Nominator: handsomeboy2012 (2/3)
Time: 4:02
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSgcdPrc8L0
Initial Rankings: Batch 6 - 13/15 (C-) & Rubric 9
Weighted Rankings: Orange 11/16
Blockbuster: Grids B-1, Y-0.1

It doesn't leave first gear. I know the video is the view outside a moving car, but it's so true. The chorus is at the same level as the verses, and it slightly rises but instantly peters out. It's more Night Cruising than the entry titled that. It fades far too quickly from memory.

.

#107. Experienced Girl
Artist: AL-90
Nominator: tazzyboyishere (4/5)
Time: 5:28
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8xhM0FeG8g
Initial Rankings: Batch 2 - 12/15 (D) & Rubric 9
Weighted Rankings: Orange 12/16
Blockbuster: Grids C-0, X-1

It's got a good beat, and I enjoy its droning wall of sound enough that it sometimes hops up my rankings when I'm quickly bouncing around songs. Yet, like a lot of songs I'm cutting during this round of write-ups, what's good in a sampled minute of time doesn't work as well for a full five minutes. It's great background noise and decent to work to, but it maintains itself far longer than necessary. It even dips out to come back as the same.

There are other, better sound walls out there.

#106. Trans-Island Skyway

Initial Rankings: Batch 1 - 9/15 (D) & Rubric 13
Weighted Rankings: Green 15/16

"Getting some Earthbound feels from the music. Very Twoson feel." - First listen note

In a previous ranking, I got a Steely Dan song that people were surprised to see in such a low spot. I feel like this is similar? It's just... it's incidental music, a transitional palette cleanser between songs. There are some nice horn bursts, but it goes on way too long and loops. It feels like an Earthbound town track, like something that would play in Twoson. Get on the bus with the Runaway Five.

P.S.: Looking up the lyrics, I only just found out Donald Fagen was in Steely Dan. ...I stand by what I wrote.
P.S.S.: Found some songs in the first three batches with notes far off to the side I didn't see on mobile. I'm glad the Twoson thoughts stayed consistent overall.
