I played the hell out of the Warriors game back in the PS2 era-- DW 2-5, plus expansions, not to mention Samurai Warriors & Warriors Orochi.

Fell off a bit after that as my group of friends wasn't always around & SP wasn't as much fun as couch co-op.

My favorite of the series would be DW5. Fun, big roster of characters, and that was before Koei dropped a bunch of weapon styles.

It has such a soft spot in my heart, and will always be that series that was once upon a time ground breaking and a technological smash, but then they decided to never ever change and just made the same game for two whole decades and now has the reputation of being cheap trash. :')

I think 5 was probably the best. 4 is when I got in but 5 seemed like an improvement over that.

8XL on Steam was the last enjoyable one. The Warriors series in general was one I enjoyed, but the games that don't use English voice actors bother me, with the exception of Hyrule Warriors.

When DW9 changed the entire cast to a bunch of people I wasn't familiar with, it made everyone feel like a new person. I know the roots of the DW series had some questionable acting, but you had a fair amount of talent reading off those lines. For instance, Lu Bu's VA, Jamieson Price, was the narrator for SF IV and Mortal Kombat 11, not to mention the voice of the Monk in Diablo III and a bunch of anime roles. I came to know associate those voices with the characters. Sure, not every VA would keep their role in the next game, but it's easier to readjust to a small handful, rather than the entire cast.

Rant aside, I've only heard good things about SW II XL, WO III, DW 4, 5 XL, 7, and 8, and HW.

I liked 2-4 alright, but I'm no fighting game aficionado. The counter system was something that set it apart from its competitors but the combos were always a bit too complex for my casual brain.

Then after 4 is where they went the route of injecting all kinds of dumb microtransactions.

Still remember Blazed Up Melpomene though. The violin focus was something that always set it apart in my head to other stuff I'd heard around the time.

I hope dw10 takes a more serious direction in the series, 9 was ok but still too goofy. Make the battles feel like you're fighting in a war alongside and against a shit ton of troops.

I've always enjoyed the Virtua-Fighter inspired mechanics of the series, and it's signature hold system is one of my favorite fighting game things ever.

That's not why people play it though and I think the series' reputation as "the booby fighter" is well deserved. I liked the fanservice in DOA2 (I was a teenager wdyd), grew indifferent later on, and came to disdain it in DO6 because they gimped the shit out of every 1P game mode but went HAM on costume DLC.

Edit: Dead or Alive 5: Last Round isn't a bad game to give the series a try with. There's a fair amount to do, lots of characters, and the visuals were pretty top tier for their time (the original DOA5 came out in 2012 on XB360 and PS3).

It'll be shit, I guarantee it. DW got lost as a franchise I believe. It started out in the first several entries as trying to simulate ancient warfare on a big battlefield, with you being a powerful warrior alongside your army. It evolved into just goofiness.

I remember in the first entries you actually had bodyguards. Like, you trained up 8 little dudes to fight alongside you, and they were actually important. Imagine that happening in the modern games, they'd be pointless.

Pirate Warriors 4 is my favorite musou ever, played it more than 200 hours after the 50 it took to platinum it - haven't even been accomplishing much, just playing cause of how fun it is

It's just the most active and engaging musou with the most emphasis on playing and getting into the combat with the least downtime

The special attack system is the best in any musou too, imo. You can build yourself around fighting primarily with those attacks if you want, or around combos, etc. Tons of options, all fun

And the roster got an expansion pass 3 years after it came out, lovely surprise, great set of characters

I still think 5 was the peak. You got one bodyguard iirc. I thought 8 XL was still fun as a sort of power fantasy but I didn't play it a lot. I still think that was my second favorite. 3 and 4 were either too difficult or odd and just bordered on comedy at times with the cut scenes and voice acting.

The best dws are 3, 4, and 5. 8 is the best of the modern ones. I prefer the older ones because army morale matters and defeating enemy generals meant something. And you couldn't just rush em down either, you had to work with your army.

5 had individual stories for most warriors? So it's like I finished it a dozen times or more but I didn't 100 percent it, if that even mattered back then. To use a old reference from old forgotten Angry gamer (ericmansuper).

"No one cares about how many points you got it's about beating the damn game!" No one brags about how many points ppl got in Mega Man 1 either. I was never a 100 percent er myself anyway.

You control an army and territory. Your goal is to expand and conquer all of China. It's their take on like a Civ game but with DW game play. 7E introduced Xu Shu into the series and I think it was the last time most of the characters had unique movesets. Then 8 came out and they just made everyone able to use every weapon and the only difference is their musou attack. I really hate it.

Nah man you got it backwards. Didn't 7 introduce weapon switching? 8 is the one where every character had a unique moveset. And like, you don't have to use other characters' weapons if you don't want to. Unless a character has a legitimately awful moveset like Lianshi or Yuan Shao that is.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong then but 7/XL/E definitely had unique movesets. It introduced a bunch of new characters like Sima Shi with their own unique weapons. I remember really liking 7E because Xu Shu was incredibly fun. I might buy DW8XL on PSN since I don't think I ever played it and I'm really missing a DW game.

I know 7 made me like using Zhou Yu way less than I did before and he was my favorite character in 4 and 5. His change to a Bo Staff in 6 was iffy but I still found it fun but 7 and on I had more fun using Sima Shi and a bunch of other characters. Cao Pi's moveset in 6E was also sick. I'm sad it only lasted one game. The dual sword moveset was such a downgrade, even compared to 5's.

Off the top of my head I'm pretty sure Xiahou Dun, Sun Quan, and Sima Zhao shared a moveset. So there were still a few clones at least at that point.

I'd recommend getting the Switch port of 8XL if that's an option, just because it comes with all the DLC, which includes new stages, costumes for free play, a unique animal, stage themes from past entries, and the weapons that several characters end up using in 8 Empires.

You would think that based on the title, and on the assumption that Tecmo Koei aren't money grubbing bastards, but no.

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP4108-CUSA00397_00-DW8WXLGAMEUS0000

Complete Edition just means it's 8+Xtreme Legends combined, I think, since they were sold as separate discs that you had to swap on PS3 originally. Still gotta buy the DLC. Also I can't find anything about whether the Divine Fox Animal included in the Switch version can be obtained in other versions.

DW3 is what actually got me on to GameFAQs. I used to read the faqs to find out how to unlock characters and 5* weapons. Good times. Ive enjoyed all the mainline entries 3-8. Never played 9. I was getting pretty tired of the same story over and over again, so I jumped over to samurai warriors later and really enjoyed that as well.

Just throwing it out there that the playstation version has a online co-op option. (Even if its certainly a ghost town, lol. Its there if you could ever drag someone to play with you).

*The switch version is also based on the PS3 version, so it uses PS3 assets for the character models and whatnot. The PS4 version uses its own higher quality models no other version got. Switch actually does come with all the DLC stuff though. Imo emei(sp?) piercer wang yi is lame though, lol*

That, and on PS4 its not like 2 separate downloads for the base game and xtreme legends separately, its a single game with all the content in it.

Good memories since the complete edition is my 2nd ps4 game ever.

I should really try playing Dynasty Warriors again, but I had a odd feeling to play Yakuza 3 again some weeks ago. So eh the really odd combat on new game plus generally makes it more enjoyable along with the wacky and serious stories at times.

I used to laugh while playing Dynasty Warriors 5 even had a quote on Gamefaqs eons ago, and 8 XL Complete on PS4 as I said thought was good but never played it a lot.

^ 6 ruined this a lot. They implemented this dumb Renbu system and made a lot of clone fighters. One of my friends was a big Seong sui yun (got the name wrong, I did do a quick search) but she used to use chakrams and then in six she just got a bow, like some other now generic characters. I don't even remember one thing DW6 added at the moment that was better. It was uhh in HD and I guess you could climb walls and it had battering rams? DW6 wasn't a good game. A total step down from 5.

Yeah, thats why I was also turned off by dynasty warriors 6, 7 (7 did bring back a good deal of unique movesets, but there was still too many clones in this game also), and one of the factors why I completely ignored 9.

Dynasty warriors 8 xtreme legends complete is the one you want where every single character has a unique moveset. (Although I do think its goofy how huang gai got stuck with a boat, lol).
