I'd hope with the new trend being adapting anime, that they'd maybe just adapt the Koei vision of Dynasty Warriors.

I know Netflix distributed the the film that was basically this, but give us a 10 part series leading up to certain battles.

There was also that early 2000 show but that didn't really scratch the itch.

Yep. Started with 5 and got hooked ever since. Didnt play 9 though. My overall favorite is probably 8XL, it feels like the most complete game. The story in 7 is presented better if you care about that though.

I remember playing DW2 when the PS2 was first released and blown away at all the characters on screen. I fell off the series a couple entries afterwards when they started introducing magic moves and whatever. For some reason it put me off to the games.

Last year though, I got Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate on sale and had a blast. Insane amount of characters to play as.

Oh and Warriors Orochi 3 is really good. Top tier Warriors game.

Most people love DW3 since thats when the series really took off. Id say 5 is the last "classic" DW game

6 is usually regarded as the worst since the combat mechanics changed a bit and the over abundance of cloned movesets really left you with only a handful of characters to use. Also changed a lot of classic weapons from the most popular characters.

7 steered the series back in the right direction with a more "accurate" storyline and less clones, but they were still around unfortunately.

8 has the best balance of story and gameplay featuring no clones as far as im aware (although some people would argue everyone is a clone due to a certain mechanic introduced in 7)

One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 absolutely slaps if you're a fan of One Piece. The Dynasty Warriors game style works really well for this anime.

There was a Pirate Warriors 4, and it had more stuff, but I think ti was a less solid game tbh.

Hell yeah PW3 was great. I loved that they actually went through story beats somewhat more accurately than the previous two games did. Plus they just added a lot more details

And PW4 had some great ideas (aerial combat was cool) but also cut some of my fav characters, no more team attacks (which I really liked), and - controversial opinion - the giant characters are just...too big. It feels a bit silly going around beating up marines who are ant-sized compared to you.

I love musou games. Kinda sad that Koei has tapered off.

Dynasty, 3-5 are peak in my opinion. 6 was a dip with the Renbu system. 7 & 8 were okay. Then 9 they tried to swerve and it didn't take off or stick.

Samurai, all but the latest were solid. My favorite way to spend time with them growing up was 2 Empires and the slow conquering of the country.

Orochi ones are all pretty good. It only builds so look at the latest additions to see where you start caring. I can't recall if 1 does, but 2 and 3 get into rock paper scissors with the officer types, which didn't hit me as well. Especially with how power type and its ability to armor hits can make some bosses really bullshit. But for pure roster, they come out on top.

All Stars disappointed me. It had potential but mechanically wasn't fun. Way too easy to get in doom spirals with how easily your allies get trounced by level differences and having multiple keep alive objectives.

My favorite musou turned out to be (the first) Hyrule Warriors, though. Fun to play, multiple styles for a lot of characters, and absolutely packed with extra content for a lot of longevity that isn't necessarily just grinding.

Yeah, I got a lot of them over the years. I completely skipped both 6 and 9 though since I didn't care for the changes in both of those games. I always had a like for dynasty warriors 3 because of those busted-ass enemy archers that can tear you to pieces in the hardest difficulty, lol. Also some characters like gan ning was straight up dumb. Dynasty warriors 8 xtreme legends complete is my favorite dynasty warriors these days.

I do agree that a lot of the spin-off warriors games for other franchises are straight up better than the main dynasty warriors games nowadays, =/ One piece pirate warriors, gundam warriors, fire emblem warriors, hyrule warriors, even persona 5 strikers, etc.

Out of all warriors games, one piece pirate warriors 3 is probably my favorite. One piece is my favorite manga so there is some bias there, but the gameplay here really is mad fun.

I've gotta second (or third or fourth) One Piece Pirate Warriors 3. It is an absolute blast of a game. They really captured the zany and overpowered feel of every one's powers. Playing as Sabo was incredible.

My favorite DW is a tough choice between 3 and 4. DW4 has a few additional gameplay elements but isn't totally off the rails. I played 5, and it felt a little off. Never bothered with the later ones, and I refuse to play any with that stupid weapon change.

I've only played the first Samurai Warriors. I assume the following games are great, but they're so time consuming I just don't know if I can get into them at this point. I have heard that the Orochi games are fantastic.

...So short story time. My fondest memory of Dynasty Warriors was in 4. I was playing as Liu Bei, the commander of the Shu army, on a fresh save (so no star or weapon upgrades yet) going against...the jungle people. I can't believe I forgot their names. Anyway, since I was the leader, the only two ways I could lose were by dying, or running out of time. The battle was going badly, all of my officers fled, my morale was at 0, it was literally ME against the entire enemy army. It was such a fucking blast going one-man army against them. I ended up finishing that battle with like 4,500 kills and ten seconds to spare.

gundam warriors, fire emblem warriors
Forgot about these ones.

Fire Emblem didn't click for me personally (the first one anyway, didn't try the second). Went too hard on the weapon triangle for my taste, even if I loved the ability to actually command your allies on the battlefield.

Gundam was great fun even if it didn't add or reinvent much. It's a shame they're not making more and those games are trapped on PS3. Team based, but it felt less reliant on it and didn't lean into r/p/s.

Lol ah yeah the nanman campaign, those were usually always a good time.

I tell ya' dynasty warriors series in general has to be the best blind buy ever. Brother just got a PS2 and looking for games to play, and randomly decided to try part 2. "Hey this is pretty good".

Fast forward to part 3 and this mofo of a game bought split-screen co-op action with it. Could barely see a damn thing because of the fog and enemies disappearing when there is too many on the screen but god damn if this game didn't get at least 400 hours out of me and my bro.

You will be good. One piece pirate warriors 3's story stops right in the very next arc after punk hazard, but the thing is when this game was first being made the arc it stops at was nowhere near finished in the manga so you will get spoiled on one single major thing when it comes to a certain character. Aside from this certain new character, the only other 2 characters that shows up in the game's version of the arc is a new admiral and doflamingo himself....like his entire crew is missing, lol.

Pirate warriors 4 is in a similar situation.....when that game was first made the wano arc the game stops at was nowhere near done, so a ton of major players is missing. It did get like......3 or 4 major characters/forms of characters via DLC, but its still an extremely unfinished version of that story arc.

They vastly reduced the power of the random mooks around the stage after DW2 (seriously, go play DW2 on normal and compare the random soldiers to every other game... it's pretty nuts), and in DW5 they reduced the AI to be a bit less aggressive (use Lu Bu as a good gauge for this as his morale bonus' make it pretty obvious) as well as reduced the damage from almost everyone (Lu Bu, inversely, is a terrible example of this as his damage was actually increased). And then in DW7 they further reduced enemy HP outside of specific (Lu Bu sized) exceptions.

So they did make some differences outside of archer cheese.

Yeah. Having a unfinished wano arc hurts a bit worse since so many interesting characters was introduced as the arc went on.

*One piece spoilers*

Really would have liked to see wano nami with zues vs ulti, wano arc jinbei vs who who, robin with her demon finisher vs black maria, franky vs sasaki, sanji vs queen, zoro vs king, and story integrated yamato, gears 5 luffy and hybrid kaido make it into the game. *Story integrated as in not just simple DLC slapped on to promote the current anime episode finally reaching gears 5 reveal.*

Going to have to wait for a pirate warriors 5 and get another unfinished arc lol.

I would love for all of those fights. Instead, we got stuck with the Big Mom Pirates and then the Marines and other characters who were never there for some reason....

I hope they decide to wait but who knows. We had what? one and a half arc done when they released Pirates 4?

Maybe they'll wait until Egghead and then give us the full arc....It would be great for

I played 7 or 8 I think, can't remember. Didn't like it. I played the hell out of and loved PW1, 2, and 3. I played 4 too but I did not really like that. Also tried Fire Emblem Warriors 1 and did not like it either. Seems the common factor for the ones I didn't like use one string combos and PW1-3 used two string combos. I mean to say the majority of if not all moves were 1-7 Square and 1 Triangle, sometimes more. It was boring as shit going through the same moves over and over for a different ender.

PW1-3 had move cancel/dodge mechanics that were better than the others too. I don't remember what it's called but you could dodge at any point of your move and cancel it, and it'd still continue the attack string. You didn't have to start over. PW4 changed both of those and added in the dumb air moves and styles imo.

If you had a PS3, the second game takes place up to Marineford I think. Or was that the first one? I forget.

3 feels like they add more arcs into the game while 4 feels like they flesh out the major arcs more but we miss a lot on others like Skypiea or anything before Alabasta.

I was a hardcore fan for many years, but I haven't played DW since about 3 months after DW9 released. I did play Samurai Warriors 5 a year or two ago (it was a bit disappointing tbh).

I loved the way the did the map and story in DW9. The gameplay was utterly unfun and a bad callback to DW6, a game that was near universally panned.

Also one more thing you should know. Don't get the PC version. Seriously.

This was during a time period where tecmo-koei's PC ports were extremely half-assed. The PC version of pirate warriors 3 is based off the vita version of the game, and it looks a good bit worse than the PS4 version. Controller support is also a bit janky to get working on that version from what I read. I think the switch version should be good to, but just look that up just in case.

EDIT: Yeah switch version is fine.

*The PS4 version also has a online component to it if you can find a single person on the earth that is actually online, lol.*

I thought you were about to say Pirates 4 because I 100% Pirates 4 on PC and the only issues I've found is that enemies don't appear on screen sometimes. Like I had issues with Garp not showing up in a game twice and I had to restart it.

Yeah its just the tecmo-koei ports around pirate warrior 3's time period. Like a few other of the PC ports in that time frame was also upscaled vita versions or something dumb like that.

that's stupid. Good thing I have a physical ps4 copy of 3. I played some of it but never got around to going through all of it. I was running through the Wano arc recently since I never watched the anime version(only the manga) and wanted to get it over with because there was terrible pacing and I ended up getting hooked into 4.

It was great but not having Eneru or Moria kinda sucks.

5's my favorite for sure on the PS2 then 8 Extreme Legends on PS4. Which I honestly didn't play a whole lot but I could tell if I put more time into it I'd probably like it even more. I definitely played 5 the most. Is the series dead now after 9 flopped so hard? These used to come out often.

They are probably just taking some time trying to figure out what to do with it. (While they continue to actually do good making warriors-like games for other companies' IPs, lol).

I actually like the art style they used for samurai warriors 5, so I wouldn't mind if dynasty warriors 10 got that kind of treatment.

I definitely want them to drop the whole open world idea though....we don't need that. Give me dense maps, multiple objectives like with older samurai warriors games, over the top non-clone movelists for each character, drop the weapon switch mechanic so they can solely focus on that one weapon for each character, give me aggressive peons that swing back and we fans will go from there.

Samurai Warriors 4-II is the PS3 version with PS4 character models. Yes, that looks as weird as it sounds.

The weirder thing is all the Create a Character parts are still PS3 textures.

Dalthine posted... Fire Emblem didn't click for me personally (the first one anyway, didn't try the second). Went too hard on the weapon triangle for my taste, even if I loved the ability to actually command your allies on the battlefield.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is a lot better in my opinion. While the out-of-game loop is fairly identical to Fire Emblem: Three Houses the way the game goes feels a lot more in line with Samurai Warriors Chronicles handling than Fire Emblem Warriors. Yeah, the weapon triangle is still a thing, but you can manipulate it to an extent so you can end up being neutral to everything or have a massive advantage against one weapon (and the game helpfully tells you if a weapon type is on the map)

I like the spin off games more. I've got over a hundred hours each put into One Piece Pirate Warriors 3, and Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn
