He apparently won Curleh Mustache #1, I think that's considered a major.

Nah, it's major-caliber but not a major unfortunately. So this is his first true Big Win in a while.

I agree with Kanz' explanation of things, but to go with the whole "name only" approach, there are still some names that need to be handled certain ways. For example, if you name your character Ares, and he isn't warlike at all, I'm gonna look down on you. You don't even need to reference any other part of his mythology, but that's what the name of Ares embodies.

But I've never been so picky. The only name I've ever thought as a "bad" choice in fiction was Adam, because apparently no character is named Adam on accident. Along with Kanz' rules above, this leads to very few stories where Adam is legitimately a proper name for a character.

Out of curiosity, would you say Human Revolution's Adam Jensen counts as a proper name? As I recall there was no Garden of Eden sillyness with him, just a 'first of his kind' sort of thing.

EDIT: Also yes, the meaning of a name is important. Even divorced from the goddess, the name Athena means 'wise'. If your character is a dolt and you don't intend on making a point of her clashing name, don't call her that, for instance.

Okay, dude, the point is that this is all really weird and strange that you're trying to point these things out to me as if they're what I'm talking about even though the whole point of the topic is specifically people who get mad at the "name only" approach.

Those people don't exist. Or when they exist, they're shunned for being tools. So basically, you'd be better served by talking about the thing I was talking about than the...what...two, three people out of millions and millions who complain about a minor, irrelevant detail with an utterly stupid reasoning?

The thing is, the guy just having that name is precisely what I said I was talking about, and then he replies that there's no examples of that because it's bad writing, then goes on to say instead you can have...exactly what I said and it's cool. So...yeah

See above. You can have a Myth Hero, a Hero With A Mythic Name, or a Not-Myth Hero. The first two are fine, the third is not (unless the story centers around averting the events of the original myth, which are occurring once more, but then the story becomes something else entirely). A name doesn't do anything by itself, Panthera. You can have a character named Mario without mentioning Super Mario Bros. and nobody will bat an eyelash. You CANNOT create a Mario character who dresses like Mario, speaks with an italian accent and becomes big by eating shrooms and then take him in an entirely different direction from the famous plumber, because you're toying with audience expectations...or to put it more plainly, you're ****ing with the audience.

This post makes no sense. You just completely contradicted yourself. Either you can or you can't have a character with a mythological name that doesn't act like their mythological counterpoint.

You missed the point. Here, walkthrough time:

I) Good Writing.

A) You have a Gilgamesh in a cyberpunk setting.
B) This Gilgamesh is the leader of a megacorp, Uruk. Tons of people depend on him and worship and revere him almost like a god.
C) Gilgamesh one day meets a young revolutionary named Enkidu. With Enkidu's help, he survives an assassination attempt from Ishtar, leader of another corp.
D) Suddenly afraid of his own mortality, Gilgamesh begins to pursue ways to transcend his body. On his quest, Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh loses his only chance at immortality, and is forced to come to terms with the fact that one day he will die. His tale finishes on a sober note, with Gilgamesh wiser and more mature than he was when his story began.

II) Good Writing:

A) You have a Gilgamesh in a cyberpunk setting.
B) This Gilgamesh is a freedom-fighting lone wolf, warring against the domineering Chimeratech Corp because of them turning him into a cybernetic freak and killing his sister.
C) The story proceeds from here until Gilgamesh brings Chimeratech down.

III) Bad Writing:

A) You have a Gilgamesh in a cyberpunk setting.
B) This Gilgamesh is the leader of a megacorp, Uruk. Tons of people depend on him and worship and revere him almost like a god.
C) Gilgamesh one day meets a young revolutionary named Enkidu.
D) Enkidu then becomes sidelined as Gilgamesh uncovers a dark secret and decides to become a freedom-fighting lone wolf, warring against the domineering Chimeratech Corp. We get a few flashbacks that reveal they turned him into a cybernetic freak and killed his sister forty years ago.

See the difference here? One story borrows from the myth to reinforce its narrative. Another story doesn't and simply uses a name. The third story brings in mythic elements and then does nothing with them. This is something you don't do unless you're a hack. No inconsistencies here.

First example that comes to mind would be Valkyrie Profile, which takes some pretty significant liberties with Norse mythology I believe. Although that's actually using Norse mythology as a setting. I'm talking more...if I made a game and there was a character named Fenrir, some people would get extremely angry if he didn't end up doing stuff like being sealed away, cutting off a guys hand or killing a major leader during the apocalypse because those are things the Fenrir of Norse mythology did.

You probably noticed this, but there are basically no examples of this - for good reason, too, because it's bad writing. If you're going to actually reference the norse Fenrir's story and then make your Fenrir be absolutely nothing like it with no further attention paid to the myth, you're being gratuitious with the pointless referencing, which good writers don't do. Further, if you're working with a visual medium, your team is going to slap you silly for making them waste time coding and animating a scene that is pointless. There's a reason one of the first things people learn about writing fiction properly is to conserve detail.

EDIT: This doesn't mean you can't have a character named Gilgamesh and have him be nothing like the God-King of Uruk, for instance - see Gilgamesh Wulfenbach of Girl Genius. It just means you shouldn't waste time establishing a pointless connection.

My only complaint about Vanessa is that I feel like she's shying away from her duty. She tends to take this very...I wanna say passive position, where she wants to only get what is immediately pressing done, and I feel like it just doesn't fit with her compassionate portrayal evidenced so far. I don't feel like this is some great flaw though, as much as an inconsistency. I'd kill for a chance to ask her about this in-character with Valerian, actually.

PS: Also, your character arc is totally fine, that aside. Keep at it!

Remember if nothing else, Vance/essa is kind of dumb. I would have put 8 for intelligence and wisdom if I could, but it's against the point-buy system of 4th. S/he can be clever when s/he wants to be, but s/he grew up in an environment that squandered the ability to develop that way, aside from just being traumatizing. Honestly she's probably a teeny bit deranged in just the right way, if only a little bit.

With that said, the notion of the world completely and utterly ending is something overwhelming to him/her, and it has called for drastic actions, which is something that scares him/her because s/he wants to put as much distance between his/her upbringing as an assassin as s/he can.

Right, I gotcha. It's just that, from Valerian's perspective, most of the group is kind of a constant surprise because they're so...indecisive, maybe? It's like, Valerian has power. And he knows the rest of the party has power. And he uses it, lots, but the others don't. And it kind of baffles him. Like I said, it's something I really wanna tackle in-character because I feel like either one or both parties might uncover some new insights from it.

Eh, I think its fairly well known that I don't care for challenging in the way that much of B8 does.

You'd really need to get a second opinion when it comes to difficulty stuff. Though I would point out that I don't think a single one of our battle strategies ever worked.

I swear they did. But hmm...maybe I need to lower the difficulty of the stuff I do a bit. I do tend to pummel you guys on the way to victory lots...

EDIT: And yes, she was made of water but couldn't talk at all. She communicated through body language.

You mean Fool's Overture? I had to shelve that, but I haven't forgotten about it. One of these days I'll revive it, I'm just waiting for the right time.

Yep that's what I meant.

And history...
It was a CYOA project Kanz did where a kid got elemental powers (and a water version of Lumina) and joined notWolfram and Hart to fight evil things. Only a mix of Kanz difficulty and B8 choices caused the main guy to fail horribly and die in the 2nd real battle. Then we had to make a deal with a devil (literally) to come back. After which we told the local drama club about our demon huntings and will probably get them all killed just like we did the girl who was with us in the 2nd battle.

tl:dr Kanz made a CYOA story where we sucked at making choices and winning battles.

Also I take offense to this. It was totally more like a water version of Zilene! :P

I thought you $entioned, at the time, that Vance would kill her?

Also, I've been thinking. If this campaign was a novel series, Book 1 - Vandorum and the Fake Universe, Book 2 - The Twilight, Book - The New World so far? The Fake Universe is hard to fit in.

Book 1: From Vandorum to capturing Learrette and setting off in Winter's ship. Title: Mage's Gambit.

Book 2: From our first adventures as the New World Outlaws to the final battle at the Godhead and entering the portal. Title: Twilight's Fall.

Book 3: From our meeting with the Old Woman up to where we are right now. Currently unfinished so no title.

Also, this...

- - Mocking Rael about my incompetence and trust of them, getting me demoted and tortured for centuries, and almost killed by Rael himself

Is such a huge stretch as to comfortably be a lie. We didn't mock Rael about Vivi's incompetence or anything of the sort. That's just straight up made-up.

And because Quentyn is in the party. And Val too, to a lesser extent.

I take offense! The implication here is that Valerian is a womanizer, when he just beats people up and they kinda sorta end up going with him! :P

Huh. Well, Kensei sounds like quite a good choice.

It's pretty tasty, yeah. I like Storvakal because Power Throw scales to +6 at Epic, but Kensei has the advantage that the feat it requires of you to get into it and make use of it (Fighter MC) is gonna be useful to you anyway.

Once again Thrown Weapons get stiffed though because there aren't any applicable weapon mastery feats.

Storvakal is good? I see the combo with Power Attack, but that's good enough?

...I can't believe there aren't any. Now that's just BS. Yeah, that really needs fix'd.

And I meant Power Throw, but yeah, it's good enough. That's a +4 to damage, AKA four times what Avalanche Hurler offered. You can Reserve Maneuver the bad power away for a ranger one, which just leaves you with a meh D20, but a gigantic damage boost and nice features. It's not PERFECT, but it adds a major amount of damage and a good bit of utility.

EDIT: To put this in perspective: Kensei offers a +4 to damage rolls. It's one of the best PPs ever.

EDIT EDIT: ...Holy crap I just remembered you can use Kensei with ranged stuffs. It only says a melee weapon, NOT melee attacks! So Reserve Maneuver Masterstroke away and, while Weaponsoul Dance is meh, you get a +1 to Attack Rolls all day and two good Striker Features. That makes two very interesting choices to consider here.

Just remember that an optimal attack stat can be decidedly SUB optimal if it tanks your secondaries too hard. DEX does enough stuff to get away with an 18 primary preracials, but that 18 costs you Prime Quarry access, potentially access to a Mastery feat (which is a really big deal in epic - the existence of Epic Resurgence is something every character has to keep in mind since it's so crazy good) and more. Though yeah...might not need nor want CHA considering Life's Losing Hand works as a per-encounter reroll regardless. If anything I'd secondary STR for the Mastery, which is so damn good.

PS: Also, I just realized something: The way things are right now, Mari counts as a gith. This means she has access to the Storvakal Gith PP. This means that if you take the Power Attack feat you get a free +4 to damage rolls all day erryday, which is amazing. The powers are not so good, but you can Reserve Maneuver the Encounter away anyway.

EDIT: I thought of mentioning Hunting Party too actually, but it's not so good I think. It requires that you miss while shooting, and seeing how easily you can up your attack bonus, that's a crap bet. Healing Lore, Leaf Wall, Root Gate, or Invigorating Stride are probably better.

Oops, I forgot to change the race <_<

Blade Opportunist is pretty good if you're making lots of OAs, but I guess I could return it to being Called Shot for some extra damage.

Shadowdance Armor prevents me from provoking on ranged attacks, anyway.

As for CHA, Heavy Blade Opportunity requires 15 STR, so I can't really afford to change anything anymore, unless I cut WIS on level ups, I guess.

That's what I was thinking of, actually. You can swap Verdant Flames (which isn't so helpful without high WIS) and Howling Winds (same) for Life's Losing Hand and/or You Can't Hide and absolutely rip into enemies. And if you're missing the accuracy of Blade Opportunist...well, that's what Prime Quarry is for, eh? And if not, Called Shot is great for getting that damage in.

PS: ...Man. Even with 12 WIS, Disruptive Strike + You Can't Hide = Lose-lose for enemies that Mari and Valerian sandwich. If Valerian is attacked Mari can shoot them and screw their roll up. If MARI is attacked instead, Valerian can launch Dispensed Justice, apply an equal penalty, and then Mari's next turn is a murderblendery horror.

PPS: Which reminds me, wouldn't Spitting Cobra Stance be a better pick instead of Flying Steel? The former had the advantage of not eating up a turn, which is huuuuuuge when your first turn in a fight is probably gonna be spent using Opportunistic Shove anyway. Plus it means you have your standard open for Twin Striking or using something else.

PPPS: Thinking about it, aren't Cut and Run or Thundertusk Boar Strike better than Pinning Shot? Pinning Shot is a single hit, while Thundertusk and Cut and Run do two, and prone + slow basically IS immobilize because of how much it nerfs mobility. Might be a better idea to stick with one of the lower powers maybe.

Hmm. Well, I'm pretty sure people have said some of those things about 3.5 too. The playtest will have to be the deciding point.

Once again.
http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=395297

Kan and I had a brainstorming session and I constructed a horrendously effective combo. Tee hee.

Can't be Drow AND have Githzerai Blademaster (since race says Drow still)...also, I wouldn't take Blade Opportunist because it's such a pile of lol IMO, and I'd get a way to avoid provoking OAs so as to be able to (ab)use Yakuza's bonus and go strongly into CHA, which has the side effect of making Opportunistic Shove pretty nice. But otherwise this is a pretty great setup.

EDIT: For bonus points, Mari and Valerian are basically Striker BFFs. Anything one does enables the other, sometimes to a ridiculous degree. If they ever hit the table together there's gonna be no survivors. All hail Headsman's Chop Mafia!

EDIT EDIT: Also, It's suuuuuuch a pity there's no way to chuck bastard swords that isn't the Farbond Spellblade, because a Weapon of Speed would be just SICK on Mari.

Meh. Call me when they have something tangible, because the 1.0 rules were pure caster supremacy. I'm waiting for leaks.

Hmm.

Can't decide whether Mari's better off as a Ranger or a Ranger|Avenger.

The only thing I really get from the latter is the reroll on all my RBAs. On the other hand, I get a reroll on all my RBAs.

Isn't Avenger hybrid limited to Avenger powers only?
