wolfkrone getting bodied as usual

That was such a hype match, too. So weird to see Wolfkrone lose, but that was amazing to watch.

Man, those super items are a robbery. I wish I had half of the loot she has. :(

But that sheet looks interesting...though some feats are weird. Shouldn't you have Acolyte and Novice Power both, if you have a Seeker Utility AND Encounter?

Didn't you have work on Thursday Ana? No need to screw things up just for us. If you can't do any day of the week I can run some FATE or a noncanon adventure for everyone else for the week.

I think once you go beyond double plus, it gets a little silly.

Scep understands where those plusses come from. They don't represent quality but instead progressively bigger power increments. Think of each plus as being squared, if that makes any sense.

Continued from above.

Valerian

Rushing Slash
Howling Strike
A simply named technique, this is Valerian's most basic attack. It is a single, powerful swing, capable of tearing into an enemy. It is particularly powerful when used after a run, as the movement's momentum smoothly transfers into the blade.
Power Rank: C

Energy Infusion/Defensive Swing
Resilience of Life/Earth Shield Strike
A defensive attack which allows one of Valerian's allies or himself to catch his breath. Due to his offensive bent, this attack has never been used in combat.
Power Rank: F

Vanessa

Battle Shifter
Footwork Lure
With an accurate strike and a short hop, Vanessa changes her position, dragging an enemy with her. This enables her to allow an ally to get out of harm's way, or put an enemy into it.
Power Rank: D

Guileful Setup
Shield Feint
A one-two-three combination of attacks, each individually weak, but which sets up a furious assault from Vanessa soon after. A perfect battlefield feint.
Power Rank: C-

Quentyn

Due to Quentyn not having encounter powers, only his unaugmented at-wills are rated here.

Failure Promise
Dishearten
A steady but subtle mental assault makes Quentyn's enemies give up the fight, as their strength falters. Their inner weakness comes to light, and their fears begin to manifest and take hold of them.
Power Rank: D

Shock Darts
Dual Hallucination
Launching crystallized thoughts of aggression at his targets, Quentyn is able to assault multiple creatures from great distances.
Power Rank: E++

Submission Display
Ego Whip
Though nothing happens outwardly, Quentyn begins to hammer an opponent's mental defenses with quick, lashing attacks, which cause much pain and discomfort. Each lash loosens his opponent's hold on reality just a little bit more...
Power Rank: D++++

Blasting Wave
Mind Thrust
An iridescent wave of mental energy briefly manifests, washing over a target and causing dozens of tiny cuts and abrasions to appear all over his skin. A simple, effortless attack from Quentyn.
Power Rank: D++

On an unrelated note, out of boredom, I decided to write up little fluff bits for the PCs' at-will powers, imagining what they would be like you added a dose of hot-blood and attack name calling to them. What do you think of them?

Brona

Enduring Command
Direct The Strike
Calling upon his expertise as a commander before his death, Brona commands an ally to seize an opportunity and strike while an enemy's guard is low, to devastating effect.
Power Rank: D-

Lightning Slice
Ensorcelled Blade
Channeling the energies of a raging storm through his blade, Brona cuts an enemy and blasts them with a shot of close-combat magic. A lingering static field punishes the foe if he dares counterstrike, making this attack a perfect mix of offense and defense.
Power Rank: C

Kirie

Touch of Hastur
Dire Radiance
Calling upon forces from the beyond, Kirie presents a foe with two bad choices: stay in place and face the wrath of her companions, or escape and be consumed by a pale, hollow light.
Power Rank: E++

Tonal Trauma
Eldritch Strike
Powerfully smiting the enemy with her brass knuckles, Kirie briefly sends him flying before he can catch his breath and recover.
Power Rank: D+++

Thunder Burst
Staggering Note
A powerful thunderclap throws an enemy backwards, allowing one of Kirie's teammates to capitalize. In this way, though the attack itself is a diversion, it enables tricky maneuvers.
Power Rank: D+

Hex of Clumsiness
Vicious Mockery
A nasty shot of psychic energy unbalances the foe, making him less competent and capable of landing blows for a brief amount of time. In this way, Kirie protects her allies in her own quirky way.
Power Rank: D+

Lloyd

Lightning Fist - Negative Energy Blow
Crane's Wings
Striking from a very short distance, Lloyd punches and kicks an enemy with such ferocity that he ends up ejected from battle. The first of the two techniques of the Lightning Fist.
Power Rank: E

Lightning Fist - Positive Energy Whirlwind
Five Storms
In an instant, Lloyd becomes a whirling dynamo of energy lashing out at enemies left and right and leaving no foe unharmed. Afterward, he leaves his scattered foes in disarray and repositioned, ready for another assault.
Power Rank: C

(Cont.)

They're very good, particularly AT2 and 3, but you have to be aware that there's loads of innuendo. Normally this wouldn't bear mention, but this is a series where 'subtext' is often deemed too obvious and goes straight into 'text', if that makes any sense. It's not something that you wanna be caught playing randomly, even though its themes are basically the opposite of what it shows.

In other news, the character name generator is hilarious.

Brona's last name is now obviously Obituary. That doesn't sound awkward at all.

Or an elf named Catslove. Or Harpsorcerer. Pro realism.

Where's this character generator? This sounds like a recipe for hilarity.

Vanessa dealt like 100 damage in one turn and 40 in a previous one, Lloyd hit him for another 100 damage, Quentyn did 60 on his own, you belted out like 80, Kirie did something like 30, and Valerian popped him for 240 damage. It was a ton of damage.

Session summary:

-Waking up after the events of yesterday, the party received a call from Saya.
-At her office, Saya informed them of the territorial disputes between the Shao Empire and the Imperium, two neighboring factions who had formed in the wake of the Flayer War and maintained a tense peace throughout the last few centuries. With Sayaburg stuck between them, Saya wished to avert all-out war, and thus recruited the party to act as bodyguards for a diplomat.
-Wanting to take care of the World Eater before embarking on what would likely be a series of week-long negotiations, Valerian asked Saya for a day to get everybody's business in order, and pitched the idea of using Ephestral's ritual to the rest of the party.
-After much arguing, Kirie grudgingly accepted and headed for a secluded location to cast the ritual, to no effect as the World Eater was too far away.
-The next day, the party met Roswald, the talking sword, the diplomat they had been charged with protecting. Departing, the party headed for the Imperium's capital...
-But an off-hand comment from Roswald about being headed for the Shao Empire's lands a few days later revealed to Valerian that something was amiss. Upon interrogating Roswald, the party quickly discovered that the Imperium had been razed by the World Eater...
-...Just before Roswald himself was struck, as the World Eater materialized in front of the party. Acting fast, the party attempted to cast the ritual, but were interrupted by the manifest souls of the dead.
-As the World Eater escaped, the party agreed to visit the Underworld and speak with its master, Edash, responsible for the souls of the dead.
-At the entrance of the underworld, Kirie befriended a cute little bunny and the party met the Ferrywoman of the Underworld, Sharon. She agreed to help them reach Edash, as she'd take his place. She also promised them safe egress from the Underworld once Edash was gone.
-Reaching the Lord of the Underworld, the party discovered that this had all been a ploy of Sharon's to seize power, attempting to increase her strength at the cost of the world's safety. Unfortunately, while Edash was supported of the group's cause, he couldn't let them walk away, being living beings trapped in the underworld, and engaged them.
-After an incredibly fierce battle, Edash was defeated. In a last-ditch attempt to preserve his soul (as, being tied to their power, slain gods disappeared into nothingness), Valerian had Luni the Deadlight attempt to absorb Edash's soul. She managed to absorb a tiny portion, but the mass of a god's soul was too much for her, and Edash collapsed into dust.
-Sharon mockingly greeted the party, congratulating them on their victory and promising to seal off all the entrances to the underground bar one. With that, she exiled the party to the real world.

I suppose I might as well. I dislike both of them, though. Once I finally get in range for my own expanded crit range at epic I'll gladly dump them. Might do so sooner, really.

Bah, I just realized that now we're in range for +4 items and I've still got plenty of +2s I didn't have time to upgrade <_<.

too fast

Well, you could always stick with Lightning (or Vega's dagger, at least until it leaves). Nothing wrong with that, and it helps with dat damage.

EDIT: Also, I just realized something. Didn't we pick up Enchant Magic Item as a ritual somewhere along the line? If so I can instantly switch to Lyncathrope and Claw Gloves, which is good times.

Yeah, boons get pretty ridiculous in large quantities.

2 would be quite a convenient number since I have exactly that many right now anyway, the Boon of Arcane Might and Lighter than Wind.

And CPU. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I don't want to make you build yourself around optimizing for the party. But, if you did so... Dream of Mual-Tar buffs two of your allies a pretty good bit.

I totally considered recommending Dream of Mual-Tar actually, since Kirie has a strong 'thunderbolts and lightning' subfocus. I decided against it only because...well...how'd you like a free crit for YOU on Death From Two Sides, scep? :P

>stiker is the leader
>leaders are more strikers

that's p.much 4th in a nutshell

New NPC list is here: http://pastebin.com/27mQ4v7L

New Vanessa wishlist is as follows:
Gauntlets of Blood (paragon tier): Level 14, Adventurer's Vault 2
Crimson Determination (paragon tier): Level 14, Dragon Magazine 393
Iron Armbands of Power (paragon tier): Level 16, Adventurer's Vault
Khyber Shard of the Fiery Depth (paragon tier): Level 12, Eberron Player's Guide
Incendiary Ring of Fireblazing: Level 14, Mordenkainen's Magnificient Emporium
Haunted Forgemail +4: Level 17, Dragon Magazine 400
Strongheart Tattoo (heroic tier): Level 8, Adventurer's Vault 2
Gem of Colloquy (paragon tier): Level 12, Adventurer's Vault
Ring of Brotherhood (paragon tier): Level 14, Adventurer's Vault

-
Unrelated but I think we really need to start considering boons a type of slot. Maybe have two boon slots like ring slots, but really, the list of items and stuff we're obtaining while ignoring a few relevant rules (I.E. boons are supposed to fade after 4 levels or something) is part of the reason why we're less a party and more a DEATH SQUAD. Just sayin.

I wouldn't mind a Boons slot, yeah. Something like two boons would be OK. Right now I'm lugging like six around! All I'd ask is that we get a chance to swap them out for other items - otherwise we get this weird mess where suddenly some items disappears and it gets all weird.

What are you taking in place of Sohei, Kan? I have trouble envisioning any theme giving you something more valuable than Sohei Flurry.

Lycanthrope. Before you ask, no, Valerian isn't turning into a werewolf/bear/bat/whatever - I'm fluffing it as a battle lust. People who've read Dresden Files can think of it as being like the Lycanthropes from there in particular. What this does for me is that it gives me two very valuable things, depending on which type of Lycanthropy I go for:

A) Claw Gloves. Regardless of the lycan build, these babies add 1d10 damage per attack. Seeing how I don't even have the minors to Sohei Flurry all that much anymore, tacking so much bonus damage to my attacks is better.
B) Depending on the build, either a power bonus to speed (so Valerian stops being a total slowpoke, thank god), or a power bonus to AC (which enables him to hit something silly like AC 38 if he hits a target and pops enough buffs).

Funnily enough, the thing that really sucks about losing Sohei isn't the minor action shot at this point - it's the bonuses to Perception and Insight and losing Sohei Invincibility. I feel like I should look for some sorta bonus to patch that up...

Hey Kanz, couldn't you take Critical Targeting? That seems like it might be even more useful for you than Grim Promise.

The problem is that fights don't last long enough for Critical Targeting to be useful to me. In spite of how long that fight was, I think I hit Edash twice during it. So Critical Targeting would only be adding a whopping 4 damage, against the kind of enemy it'd be needed against the most. I can get a much bigger payoff off of another feat I think.

2d6 Curse damage, pay attention.

...Fine, I'll consider taking Whispers of The Dream King, even if I have the same problem with it as I do things that dominate.

Actually, nevermind. I'll just change Whisper's name to Love is Over, so I can make Catherine jokes when I use it, and now I'm fine with it.

Haha, that's amazing. :P

PS: Also, sorry if I sounded pushy CPU - it's just that, and this is gonna sound weird coming from Valerian's player, the thing I've learned from 4e is that the most powerful Striker...is the Leader. Valerian is good alone, but only because he's loaded with quasi-leader buffs he can stack up (see: Form of the Magma Brute, his newest acquisition, and Rage of the Death Spirit). He only truly shines and pumps out 120 damage per turn when he's being enabled by three different people. The ultimate way to pump out extra damage is to treat the party as your actual weapon, instead of your implement or blade. If I had powers that gave MBAs I could take, I'd be all over them even in place of my multiattacks, no lie. I think you want to deal damage, so I want to point out the way go for it so you can have fun instead of having to healbot for us, as has occasionally happened. If I got what you wanted to do wrong, my apologies. :)

I kinda want a Warlock power at this point so I've actually got a reason to curse people and make use of the extra damage that I technically have.

Two of my current three 'Lock powers are melee, and I don't often get the chance to use the last nowadays.

It's basically either this or Oubliette of the Void.

You've already got a reason to curse people, though. And the curse damage is pretty much just...like...a little bit of icing, honestly. Same way that Valerian's Warden punishes are cool when they happen, but aren't the main reason he's a Warden. You don't need to use everything both classes give you, and in fact, doing so tends to be counterproductive. It's much more useful to just take what you need and then focus on one class. I mean, put it this way: are you gonna do more by scoring 2d8 curse damage, or by giving someone an extra attack via Bard powers? If you really, really want a Warlock power, I'd go for Far Realm Glimpse, which at least forces the target to eat a truckload of OAs or take damage. This, at least, would be vaguely efficient striking (vaguely, because you have like a third of the damage of Valerian, Brona, or Lloyd, so your hits kinda just barely sting, but eh), while also opening up OA strikes.

Not sure Curse of the Golden Mist is all that good for us...sure, it does block standard actions, but just for one turn, which is practically nothing seeing how solos tend to act two or three times per round and they have save bonuses out the ass. Wouldn't Whispers of the Dream King be better?

Anyway, Accel, post your NPC list again. I like it and you met a new character (technically three, if you count Edash and Roswald).

PS: Though I almost feel like I should get a Mark feat...everybody has one, so even though it might not be the strongest choice it'd be a proper thematic fit. Argh, decisions decisions.

Oh yeah, BTW guys, I'm looking for opinions on feats to train or retrain to right now. Care to chime in? Right now I've got Action Surge and Power Attack, and here's the feats I was considering to replace them:

-Grim Promise: Slaps down a -2 penalty to attack rolls until the end of my next turn when I crit. Considering Valerian is basically a critical hit engine at this point, this is very likely to happen and it helps keep the attack roll pain train going, which is nice when enemies can hit so hard.
-Divine Channeler: Grants me a daily use of a cleric Channel Divinity power, which means Favor of the Gods right now. Favor of the Gods in particular lets me grant anyone in close burst 3 a reroll (this includes myself too!), which is pretty nifty, though it does gobble up minor actions, which are always in short supply for Valerian.
-Fleet Footed: +1 to speed. No frills, but certainly very helpful because part of my minor action starvation is my constant need to use Defensive Step Training to close 12 square distances.
-Battlewise: WIS to initiative, increasing my initiative to +20. I always go last partially because I'm a poor initiative roller, but this can help with that. And when I go first, I can buff myself with wild abandon too.
-Acolyte Power Cleric Swap: Valerian isn't gonna be a Sohei much longer, so my Level 10 slot is basically free now. And the fight with Edash showed me that our party has a certain flaw: when we're tagged by heavy duty AoE...we're pretty much right ****ed. We don't have a single mass healing power available. So, I'm considering picking something up to help with that. I could take Bastion Of Health to basically get a Healing Word, Battlesurge to heal all allies in a close burst 5 for a surge and an attack bonus (but it's pretty 'spensive at a standard action cost, yowch), or Word of Vigor to heal everybody who sticks close to me a bunch (but the problem is, who the hell DOES stick close to me? The party tends to be super scattered in the best of cases).

...Or I could take Astral Refuge to counter-troll Kirie's Timeless Treks in the funniest way possible. <_< >_>

So anyway, what do you think guys?

Holy crap.

I mean, wow.

I didn't think this was even possible, but I'm probably not going to take Dominant Winds next level. I can't believe a power existed that trumps 'at-will flight for everyone'.

Forbidden Ground - Warlord Utility 16
Daily - Martial
Standard Action
Close Blast 3
Effect: The blast creates an area of forbidden ground. Until the end of the encounter, whenever an enemy enters the area, you or an ally can charge that enemy or make a melee basic attack against it as an immediate reaction.

Just... wat. That's lunacy.

It DOES cost a standard...but sheesh. That's a perfect combo with Inspired Solutions and your slides.

Also:

We’ve also come across some clues recently that would also lead us to believe that Nintendo is finally about to break out into the mobile gaming universe as well. Soon, we hope!

Man, imagine if this happened.

If this happens we could see the very first true Megacorp in history. That would certainly be *something* alright.

Is that in the wrong topic, or is my lack of sleep preventing me from making logical connections?

Look at Quentyn's conversation. He has no idea what he's gonna do once Rael is done for. The only people who have a clue where they're going once Rael is finished are the two Vs - Vanessa and Valerian.

I gotta say, i like how nobody has any idea about what they're gonna do except the gal who goes with the flow and the dude who specializes in making sure everybody else has no idea what to do.

In other news, it seems that Monte Cook is no longer involved in the production of 5e.

Which is awesome. Means 5e will still be terrible, but perhaps not irredeemably so.

If we've been doing that ever since we got her... I don't think I want to give her her voice back! I suspect she'll be most displeased.

Jokes aside, this is something that was always a thing but unstated and it's the most annoying thing ever. Let's rectify it.

There were just too many flat-out incorrect, utterly indecipherable lines in the original FFT translation for Smith's rendition to be truly worse.

Jeff, Smith played no part in it. Seriously, he didn't.

So hey, two interesting news about Aluxial, guys:

A) She is in constant pain as if her skull had been burst open - every slight bob of Kirie's head causes her to smash against the top or bottom of her tube. Considering we've been in strenous combat multiple times before, she must be dying of pain right now, except she can't die because of the enchantments on the tube.

B) We can sonorize the tube again any time we want as long as Quentyn spends a day recreating Ashara's ritual.

So, can we just assume we give Aluxial her voice back and then leave her at home by the time we begin our next session? Because making her ram her head against he tube's ceiling at Mach speeds every time Kirie moves her head is stupidly evil and the ritual shoulda been done already.

OmarsComin posted...
was 7 and Tactics handled by the same person or group of people? I've always been curious about that. they're both translated kind of poorly.

The 90s were an era when game translation wasn't quite that good yet. The only "good" translators were Ted Woosley and Dan Owsen. 7 and Tactics came out right around the time Woosley left Square

There's also the Xenogears guy, Richard Honeywood, who did a legitimately outstanding job and paid a serious personal price for it. He deserves all of our respect.

Is liking the original FFT translation akin to liking Legend of Dragoon? Something that you'll only like if you experienced it at a young age?

Not really. I first played FFT in 2k8 IIRC, and I'm not that young for it to count as 'young age'.

Wow this quickly turned into a topic I can't even read because I haven't played FFT yet!(shame on me, I know)

Same as we told pjbasis: Go play it IMO. And I recommend using the link OmarsComin posted while going through it. I've only covered the introduction and yet that's enough to make me interested already because the FAQ writer used interesting examples of adaptation and cited Vagrant Story.

Yeah, that line is just a bunch of lol. It's not even amusing like Daravon's stuff - it's just straight up bad.

Man I'm not being hyperbolic at all, but you act like I won't defend my favorite game. FFT PSP is an abomination. The only thing worse would be putting FFT 1.3 on it.

Is 1.3 that bad? I thought it was the hack that was actually pretty decent? Or is that another one?

Wow, every single facet of FF13's development sounds just absolutely terrible. They really need to restructure their management system

Apparently this got fixed a bit for XIII-2. Which explains why that game turned out so much better!
