TBF, anime watchers have long been seen as "weird" just for "watching cartoons". Even before we all became terminally online.
The complaint of anime only being "pedo" and full of fanservice comes from people who are new/tourists and only primarily watching the popular flavor of the decade shonen animes and other anime that are built on fanservice while also expecting other cultures media to cater to their sensibilities. There's tons of other anime to watch that are tame/no fanservice at all but like the average Netflix watcher, they rather just say there's "nothing to watch" when there actually is.
