Also, I'm probably going to wait until I finish up with Frasier before I start on Dragon Ball (which should be sometime within the next couple weeks, I'd guess). I'm also probably going to wait a bit until I start my next new game because I've been spreading myself thin between Trails the 3rd, Frasier, and this insane Ace Attorney project I've committed myself to doing. Plus, I've got the Persona 5 anime now and the Steins;Gate 0 and Full Metal Panic animes coming soon! I need to cut back a little so it doesn't interfere with real life too much because I'm bad about trying to make sure I get something from all these things in every day and neglecting stuff I should probably be doing instead.

Trails 3rd: Yeah, the ending is sweet. Definitely teared up a bit.

How do you think the game compared to FC and SC?

Pretty clear hierarchy, in my opinion. All good games though.

3rd pretty easily has my favorite soundtrack of the series among the games I've played. Though I guess it is a bit weird because I think the best FC/SC songs are better than the best 3rd songs, but I think 3rd has a noticeably better average song quality.

Cradle Where Feelings Rest is probably my favorite song because I'm weird like that, but I honestly think like 90% of the soundtrack is great.

Trails the 3rd just lacks the sense of scale and importance of the other two. It's essentially a giant victory lap. A darn good one, but nevertheless, it lacks substance that FC and SC possess. Plus, I'm not as big on Kevin and Ries as I am on Joshua and Estelle, so switching protagonists affects its rating a bit.

Also, fun little fact/easter egg about Nightmare Arena: If you got Anelace's sword from the Star Door and then have her in a team that wins Nightmare Arena, it gets upgraded... even stronger than her Zemurian Ore Weapon. >_>

Trails 3rd not so great yeah. The ending was amazing, as were some doors, but the core story? Not so much. I do appreciate it being the only Trails game that has a great ending though!

I don't think the concept of a victory lap is that difficult but would it be better if I said Trails the 3rd is essentially an epilogue or an appendix to the first two games?

the events of the main game aren't really all that important other than fleshing out Kevin's character

it's largely a celebration of the characters with some bonus fanservice via all the Doors

Watching episode 2 of the P5 anime

One of the things that bothered me a bit about the game is that Kamoshida is a bigger piece of shit than the owners of the next five palaces imo, but the game kinda acts like the opposite is true

He's more reprehensible, but his crimes are much smaller in scope. The ramp-up of P5's villains isn't necessarily how vile they are compared to how grand of a take-down they'll be for the Phantom Thieves.

Well, P5 game spoilers Okumura did literally have people killed, so I'd probably say he's at least as bad as Kamoshida is. Kaneshiro's probably committed all sorts of crimes - wouldn't be surprising if rape and murder were among them. And that's not even mentioning the crimes of the Palace 4 and 6 characters...

Well, in Persona 5, you see the effects of Kamoshida's disgusting actions directly within the early part of the game, and he's so blatantly evil, too. He's just a despicable human being with no nuance whatsoever to him. I think it was pretty smart to have someone like him as the starter villain since it hooks you almost right away, but at the same time, nobody else really compares in the "love to hate" bad guy camp other than Shido (and maybe the SIU Director that you never get to face at all).

Well, in P5, None of the other villains are personal like Kamoshida is. You have to seek out your other targets. Kamoshida is unavoidable, and you have consistent and direct interaction with him.

Structurally, there really isn't a way around it unless you throw the structure itself out.

all I had to do was tell him that the last chapter was probably the best part of the main game with a strong ending and post my inequality so he could see this mysterious "Erika" in the top 5 that he doesn't know and he was good to go

but then I mentioned the implications of Erebonia's political situation that we briefly see in 3rd and his eyes lit up like it was FFT or Game of Thrones

I think both the Cold Steel games that have English releases are noticeably worse than the Sky games, though they're pretty great RPG's themselves also.

Cold Steel 3/4 looks hype as hell though, and my reading is that the portion of the fanbase that has played CS3 considers it to be one of the stronger Trails games.

Also about The 3rd, I think the right way to look at the game is as the video game equivalent of a short story collection, rather than a main entry in an adventure epic. In other words I don't really think it matters that the game doesn't have a strong overarching focus on an epic narrative, because to me that's never what the game was trying to be in the first place. And I think the individual stories (including the main one) are quite good--personally I think 3rd easily has the most "top-tier" moments of the series. (Well of the games in English anyway. I've heard quite good things about Ao, which I of course haven't played.)

Obviously that's not exactly a story structure that falls into well-established JRPG conventions, and it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but those are my thoughts anyway.

Meanwhile I've spoiled myself on basically the entire Crossbell arc and a number of (seemingly minor, thankfully) things from CS3. Being an English Trails fan is hell.

Many of the Crossbell things I intentionally spoiled myself on, admittedly, though a few including one major spoiler were not.

I will say it's not actually my favorite Trails game either, though I do regard it very highly. In particular I think chapter 6 drags on for too long (if I remember the doors you unlock here were mostly not great also?). Also I think the way they introduce the central story is not great. Once it becomes clear it's mainly exploring Kevin's past (which is relatively early) I think it's fine, but it did take a bit of time for me to get on board with it.
