They started as games first, but the Pokemon and Fire Emblem characters have anime all over them. Sonic never seemed like he would really fit to me. Snakes from an entirely different genre and nobody in the Smash series looks more out of place than Game & Watch. People were regularly angry about snubs, but here we're happy to even get new characters, and each one is a blessing. I like the games he's in but there is just no way to make him a character and not have it feel really fucking weird. Even assist trophy would be really odd.
