Hope you get to feeling better, Youkai.

I've been reading various manga, mainly Shield Hero. I'm pretty close to being caught up. Out of curiosity, where is the anime right now? I'm shortly after the third wave.

Also been getting back into my Vita. Playing Omega Labyrinth (**** you again, Sony), Dragon's Crown, and Sonic & All Stars Racing. I forgot how much fun kart racers can be.

What convenient timing. I just finished catching up on shield hero anime. They just finished the fight with the pope. The series has been decent overall so far although the fights are pretty meh. A lot of talking during them where enemies must be waiting like 5+ minutes sometimes to finish their attacks.

Ah the long awaited episode of shield hero is out. It was satisfying. I want some more isekai. I'm pretty sure I'm aware of all the anime that exist. Any more good manga/manwha thats similar to either shield hero or solo leveling?

Also not related to this topic really but I finally finished a game. I've got more work to do on it before I'm satisfied but it's actually playable and beatable. Despite the health issues, things are looking up.

Yes, a very solid comeuppance. Honestly I almost felt bad for Myne. She seemed so compelled to lie even in the face of obvious proof. Just felt pathetic. The king also seems to have suffered some great trauma. I mean, no excuse, they still probably deserved death which was nicer than they got, but they truly were pathetic.

I might pity them or feel even the slightest bit of sympathy for them, if not for the fact that she had every intention of killing her own little sister. That shoots straight past pathetic status and into Monster territory.

Went through the action anime on MAL. At this point it's like when you have nothing to eat in the fridge, but you keep finding yourself opening the fridge door and looking anyway every 5 minutes cause you're hungry and not thinking about it. What I wouldn't give for another samurai champloo. Preferably like 1k episodes long or so. Oh well, it was a good excuse to fill in my list a bit on the newer account (since I lost my original when the passwords got reset).

I'd end up quitting anime if I lost my mal account at this point. Too many things to remember. I'd be constantly looking at shows like "ooh, that looks neat" and then getting that funny feeling I'd seen it before while watching it.

Do you know what's on your old list, or are you just winging it?

My old account still exists and it's list is public, I just can't log on, but I was going from memory this time. I've gone through the top 1000 anime enough times to know most of what I've watched (and pretty much everything I haven't as well).

I'm pretty much just seasonal or rewatch at this point but I do a sweep through all the half decently rated anime every few weeks because I get desperate.

Me as well.

In other news, I've started playing Final Fantasy XV. I dunno if it's just me, but the combat can be a little hard to follow sometimes. Like, because everything is so detailed my eyes just get assaulted with too much visual data sometimes. I'm still very early in the game so I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually.

Oh, I found another manhua that fans of Solo Leveling might like.

It's called Burning Effect.

It's still pretty new, with only around 12 chapters out so far, but I can definitely see the potential for it becoming as big as Solo Leveling. The art is what really draws me in for this one. It's like a mix of My Hero Academia and Soul Eater with a splash of american graffiti art styles. And the action! Wow, it's just as smoothly drawn and well composed as Solo Leveling imo.

If you liked Solo Leveling, you might like this one.

I read the first few chapters. Not a huge fan honestly. The lack of being full color really hurts it in my eyes and the story just isn't that appealing to me. Seems more like a straight shonen.

I then checked out tower of god and it's fun so far. Still only like 34 chapters in.

Jojo is super corny yes but its also super violent and super...Bizarre.

Its kind of hit or miss for me.

The first arch is alright just because its the introductory one.

The second arc is one of my favorites because as supereyepatchwolf puts it, the writer throws away raw power to trade for cunning which makes for a much interesting story. Also the protagonist is very lovable.

The third arc was good but it was a slog sometimes. One because I was mad they did away with the 'hamon' energy in favor of stands which in the long run is more interesting but I started getting antsy waiting for the final confrontation because Dio is all I really wanted to see.

The fourth arc is hands down the best in the series and if you want a really good story then just start here. Instead of it being about something grand like saving the world its just about a serial killer, and BOY is it GOODD.

The fifth arc is decent comparatively to the 1st and 3rd arc though I havent finished it so I dotn know where to place it yet.

Dang guys, tower of god is fucking long. I figured there were only 100 floors. When I saw them cut to a scene on floor 123 it really hit me how long this manhua is. I'm on "season" 2 "episode" 150 and I'm not even half way through whats out which as I understand it is still not complete. It feels like this thing could reach one piece levels of length.

Still really solid though. Apparently I'm reading the official translation which is oddly sloppy in some chapters and flawless in others. The arts good and full color and the story is somehow fast paced and moving at a snails pace at the same time.

Has anyone else read this? Seems to be the second most popular manhau behind solo leveling but theres WAY more content out.

I remember talking about it when it was still pretty early, like it was still only 30 chapters or so. I dropped it some time after that, but I don't remember why.

Also, apparently FFXV has a movie and miniseries that I need to watch in order to understand the plot?

Of course, I'm still around chapter 5 of a 15 chapter game, so the plot might end up being complete and those would be supplementary things. But all the research I did points to the movie being integral to the game's backstory and lore. The miniseries are apparently just mostly some short episodes to flesh out the chocobros, which I can understand.

But I'm not sure how I feel about a game that has to cut out vital elements of the plot, and can't manage to say what it needs to say within the game itself.

I'm just glad that the short fad of games being this big multimedia thing a while ago hasn't really caught on.

I haven't played FFXV but as I understood it, a movie(s?) came out before the game giving some backstory about the main characters dad and the main guy's childhood and the political situation but I think you can still gather most of that from playing the game and it isn't vital info. The movie was really poorly rated so it might just be better to read a summary and skip it.

The first 79 chapters are basically prologue. They don't even introduce the power systems and stuff until like 60 and they don't delve far into it until season 2.

I really wish this was an anime even more than solo leveling because even though the art is great, the action is a bit hard to follow just due to the nature of how all the powers and systems work. Seeing it animated would make it a lot easier to follow the action. Oh well, it's korean so pretty much no chance of that.

So I watched the Kingsglaive movie and it was... okay.

I honestly expected more backstories and stuff about the main four, but it's really just about the one day that happens in the main game once you left the city.

Though it definitely feels like you're supposed to watch it AFTER chapter 1 and not as a prologue.

There's a couple of concepts in the movie that you would really only get and appreciate if you've played the game first.

Other than that, everything was, like I said, okay. The voice acting was great, and I really appreciate that they animated the lip-syncing to the dub as well.

Really, the only meaningful character backstory or lore that I got out of it was that the king was a badass. You only briefly see it in the game but here you really see that, woah, he really deserves the command and respect of the throne.

So yeah, I guess the next thing I have to watch is the short anime series Brotherhood. The thread on reddit said that I'm supposed to watch that after Chapter 7 in the game, so I have a way to go before I do that, since I'm still on chapter 5.

You know, it's never really talked about much, but English dubbed OPs were pretty good if done well.

Now, with the boom of anime culture in recent years, it's getting easier and easier to find passionate people who can really put their all into making a dub of an OP sound just as good as the original.

EDIT: And here's the original for comparison

And I gotta say, I actually kinda like the english one better a little bit! I feel like they have much more energy and enthusiasm in their delivery.

Funimation in particular has been known to dub a lot of songs over the years, the quality of which varies. Yu Yu Hakusho songs were top tier; they stay in my music folder on my phone.

I think we discussed this a while ago, but trying to do a half decent song dub is no easy task. Going for a near-direct translation, which I've seen several of my favorite artists do, rarely works. You've got to make sure it sounds natural in English, while also staying true to the spirit of the original lyrics.

This is one of my favorite songs in either English or Japanese; they're basically apples and oranges to me.

Man, playing FFXV made me kinda nostalgic for the original Final Fantasy that started it all.

I only remember playing the GBA version of it a loooong time ago. But now that I can, I kinda want to play the, supposedly, definitive PSP version of it.

So I'll do it! I'll play the original (well, not really original since it's a remake) Final Fantasy, alongside the newest Final Fantasy.

Now, I'll obviously stick to the base three classes of Fighter/WMage/BMage, but who should my fourth be?

Agreed. She's absolutely adorable. And she's what convinced my wife that Fire Emblem might be a fun series to play. ... Well, her and Niles.

English dubs I prefer: It's a growing list, but I've gotten pretty attached to the English casts for the Fire Emblem and Persona games. Atlus games in general, really, going as far back as Digital Devil Saga. And I've actually really come to like the English casts of the various Fate anime, though I still tend to watch that subbed (because that's the only way I can get the Heaven's Feel Blu-Rays).

Most salient example for me is still Dragon Ball Z, though. Goku shouldn't sound like somebody's (admittedly badass) Japanese grandma, IMO.
