kirbymuncher 07/09/19 5:17:05 PM #330:	well I finished utena. except for the movie I guess. anyone familiar with the series know if I should bother watching it or not? my understanding is that it's basically just a retelling of the series I can see why it was as influential as it is. the shot composition is super cool in terms of angles / cuts / etc. The OST has some super neat and impactful tracks for big moments. the insert song for heading up to the dueling arena gets 3 different versions as the story progresses through each arc, with each one getting more intense / fuller sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elrwRshCUpk" data-time=" most importantly though was that there's a lot of relationships that I imagine were pretty unusual at the time (though some don't seem like much now). There are guy x guy, girl x guy, girl x girl. There's an incest relationship and multiple large age gap relationships that are taken pretty seriously. utena herself is a girl who tries to act like a guy so that just makes some of these even weirder to define. The main couple is interracial which is super rare even nowadays for anime to have someone who even resembles another race at all <_< Despite all this praise though I cannot understand how anyone who watches it for the first time nowadays could ever call it a masterpiece. It's slow paced. It's repetitive. It continually reiterates entire scenes that imo goes beyond just "oh they're saving some money with stock footage". finally, it's just..... really really boring a lot of the time. Its good moments are super good but I'm really not sure the whole thing was worth it as a package. The main couple is interracial which is super rare even nowadays for anime to have someone who even resembles another race at all <_< Despite all this praise though I cannot understand how anyone who watches it for the first time nowadays could ever call it a masterpiece. It's slow paced. It's repetitive. It continually reiterates entire scenes that imo goes beyond just "oh they're saving some money with stock footage". finally, it's just..... really really boring a lot of the time. Its good moments are super good but I'm really not sure the whole thing was worth it as a package. I agree with you there. Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of those shows that was amazing for its time, but it didn't age very well and other shows have done what it did better. Hell, I heard Revue Starlight referred to as "Utena lite" throughout its entire run, and it did a lot of the things that Utena was famous for even better.
