Last night I hit a red MSQ in the filter between ARR and Heavensward because I haven't done se of the hard versions of primal battles. That makes mainlining my way through this stuff hard. How much of the "plus" quests are just dungeons and how much of them are actual other threads of story? I've done a bit of the aethersand stuff, but not much else because I figured it was just all optional dungeons of which I've done barely any during my time with the game. Am I missing out on a lot?

The good news is that this is the only time I think the MSQ does this with something that isn't just checking your job quest. There are a LOT of side stories but nothing directly relevant. Some of them get referenced by the main story or alter dialogue but that's it.

I would reccommend doing side dungeons and questlines at your own pace when you hit the endgame of each expansion - you'll rack up poetics at a good pace to get gear and there's plenty of neat dungeons and fights. Where you are now there's only a handful of side stories and mostly it's one-off dungeons, but in the expansions they add more ongoing storylines to do.

For right now I'd say to look into doing Crystal Tower and Hildebrand whenever you want a break from the main story.

So I'm wondering about raids and Duty Finder. At level 50, I cleared all of Crystal Tower no problem and queue times were decent. Never bothered with Coil especially since the quest to unlock didn't require you to go in.

Now at 60 and I'm wondering if Alexander normal is ok to use DF. And the Alliance Raid. When is it a good idea to use DF in general regarding raids? For all Extreme trials I just used PF unsynced instead.

DF is fine for all content in the game except Coils, Extreme trials, and Savage raids (and ultimates)

You can't even queue for Ultimates without a pre-made party of 8, so that's kind of a moot point.

Gearing up DoHs at 50 seems like a pain; I assume just doing normal leveling once I finally hit HW will make that obsolete anyway? (I still want to make some of the advanced level 50 stuff like orchestrion rolls).

Yes absolutely. It's a bit of an awkward hump to get to the first tier of leveling gear though, but it's MUCH better than trying to make 50 gear that becomes obsolete almost immediately.

If you haven't, check out Mor Dhona to get a quest to unlock collectables and keep an eye out for more later to get full access to them. They help immensely with leveling and gearing later.

Speaking of voice acting, big heads-up before starting reaching Heavensward.

Pretty much the entire voice cast changes completely starting from Heavensward. Basically they went from American voice actors to British ones.

I play on Crystal (Couerl) as well. Can confirm it is a garbage DC, but I'm not motivated to change anything now.

Sam and the ones who voiced Raubahn, Merlwyb, and Lolorito were great and will be missed.

However, Kann-E-Senna will suck exponentially less, and almost everyone else improves marginally. You get used to it.

Specifically, Aymeric and Moenbryda have British VAs fro the word go and don't change. Everyone else is replaced, and for the better imo, except for Merlwyb.

Alphinaud and Urianger were pretty damn good. The rest have improved.

They decided it just made sense to stop using union actors for an ongoing game once it became clear ARR had made FF14 a success, since they
a) cost more
b) are more likely to have scheduling conflicts than non-union actors, and
c) are mostly Americans putting on British accents to fit the aesthetic of the game

You may as well just hire British actors in that case, and despite not being household names (for the most part) they've done a pretty good job. There were also some enforced recasts, such as with Yugiri's original voice actor, which probably factored in to the change in studio as well.

I don't recall anything going on with Yugiri's first voice actress. It was her replacement in Heavensward that got killed, leading her to get recast again.

I got called a troll for using my Limit Break in the Crystalis Duty where you fight Nabriales. One of the people said "Never use your LB on the boss" and I'm not sure if they were saying that in general or just for that instance. Is there etiquette for using Limit Breaks?

I guess for reference I was playing Melee DPS.

that trial in particular is different - you want to save the LB for a particular point thats harder than the rest, since a lot of parties can't handle it without LB skipping it. and people can't fathom people not knowing that.

you'll also see people complain about LB on trash mobs in things like castrum meridianum, not realizing the LB will reset if it isn't used. Ignore these people.

Translation: There is an actual, honest-to-god DPS check that you must pass or wipe about 3/4ths of the way through the fight, and the troglodytes in your average DF party aren't capable of pressing their buttons well enough to do it without LB.

Still going through level 60 content. Today I beat the Warring Triad. Too bad it didn't end with some Dancing Mad. After this only have to do one more Alexander tier and the Hildibrand questline. Then I'm good to keep going with main scenario.

Thank god for White Mage queues.

In dungeons, anything goes - if you're melee use it on the boss, if you're ranged/caster use it on a large trash pull.

For trials and raids, there are occasionally mechanics that require tank LB to survive (usually the big, flashy "ultimate" attacks). If it's your first time in a duty and you're not sure whether to LB or not, err on the side of not using it until the boss is under 10%.

I honestly don't even remember how to use a limit break (I'm on PS4 and play on controller). Mostly I just figure the tanks/healers will use it if they need to.

Finished the ARR Hildibrand quests

I was really thrown off with the Cecy reveal because she looks extremely similar to my character; it took me a second to realize that it wasn't a "your face" thing

Battle in the Big Keep was fun (I'm a huge fan of Gilgamesh), but it was a huge letdown to be locked out of the second half of the fight because I guess the tank couldn't wait thirty fucking seconds to let people watch a cutscene (also really dumb that that's possible; I guess it probably was in other places, but this is the first time I haven't been able to finish a cutscene/get in before the 15 seconds were up). I had to queue again afterwards to actually experience the whole fight.

That fight was hell on release fyi. There was no echo and everyone was at gear or undergeared. It was the biggest "git gud" moment in the entire MSQ on release. Now it's a breeze!

Just a fun tidbit but yeah that part is sick. All the post-HW story is pretty great imo.

It's also the very first time the stack marker AoE appears (on the last phase's Akh Morn). Even to this day you still see new players get that marker, have no idea what to do with it, and run to the corner to get oneshot. It's great.
