I guess it is possible Netflix is just hyping the trailer even though they are uninvolved.

That would be fairly odd, though.

March 2021 for International Netflix if it follows the Beastars schedule? And who knows what corona might do to it on top of that. Woof

Complete fucking decimation of all of the hopes of Jujutsu Kaisen being the next "big thing". I'm not even a fan of the manga and it's still just a shame to see.

Honestly I think Summer is gonna be pretty beefy with how many shows got moved TO it. The season that was truly under threat was this one, and it managed to hold on tight with quite a few surprise bangers.

Finished Cautious Hero. I wouldn't say the show's anything to write home about, but it was consistently entertaining. Fun jokes and boss fights, and the finale had some surprisingly heartwarming moments. I will say that I wish Seiya showed a bit more personality sometimes, and that the Gaeabrande characters were less interesting than the divine realm characters, but oh well. Overall a solid show that was entertaining and held my attention, but probably not much more than that.

I also got caught up through season 3 of Haikyuu a while ago. (Yes I know there is a season 4. I am probably waiting to watch it.) Don't really have anything to say specifically but it is a consistently great show.

I was watching Sakura Wars and was liek going into it thinking? "Why is this rated so low it can't be that bad" and then I saw that the whole thing was 3D and was like "that explains it".

but I didn't actually drop the show until episode 2 where the dark skinned girl was singing, and unfortunately she has this deepish voice that doesn't really sound natural and another girl (Sakura I think) walks in and is like "you're voice is amazing" and I'm like "okay that's enough."

Kaguya S2 Episode 6 (last week's but I'm a week behind because Funimation)

Really liked this episode personally. Miko is looking to be a good addition to the cast so far. Lots of times with shows like this the core cast is solid but then they introduce lots of new characters that aren't interesting and/or don't mesh well with the other characters such that the cast just feels bloated. That hasn't be the case with this show at all though which is great. Also the introduction of Miko makes Ishigami's character a lot better and he was already one of my favorites to begin with.

When Kaguya-sama started originally I enjoyed it but was still somewhat lukewarm on it compared to the rest of the community. This isn't just due to this episode which I wouldn't stay is substantially better than the other this season, but I do think the show has managed to prove itself to me by evolving and only becoming more interesting as time goes on when many similar shows would fizzle out into repetitiveness or mediocrity this far into things.

I kind of felt the same while going through the manga. It was good in the beginning, but it was not until around this point in the anime that I felt this is the real deal, when it focused less on mind games and more on the characters (with more to come).

I consider them to be complementary. The anime elevates the manga but it does skip some chapters and scenes. Sometimes it goes so fast that there isnt time for jokes or character moments to sink in.

Admittedly the manga art isnt that good but the plot is moving along nicely and who knows if we will get s3 or not.

So I've started reading Tower of God on Webtoon. I am up through a bit further than chapter 30, which appears to correspond to the end of episode 6 in the anime. (though I have not watched any of the anime)

I guess I have mixed feelings so far. I like the characters (aside from the main, tragically), but on the other hand the comic has done nothing to address my primary reason for hesitation with the series in the first place, which is that the setting seemed (and still seems) unnecessarily restrictive in terms of the types of stories it can tell and seems unsustainable in the long-term. And if anything recent developments have only heightened my concerns now that we've diverted from everything so that the characters can go to school and learn about this bizarrely specific mode of combat that for some reason is used in the tower. There's definitely some interesting stuff here when you get into the characters of Rachel or Kuhn or the royal family, but I'm not convinced now that the series is well positioned to take advantage of any of that.

Basically what I'm saying is that the series does have a lot of potential, but I wish I had any faith in the belief that the series will capitalize on any of it. I am enjoying the series for now though, so I guess I'll find out where it goes from here.

There's also some potentially interesting allegorical stuff going on here, but ultimately I don't think that's going to make significant headway until more of the mystery of the setting is revealed which likely won't happen for some time.

Tower of God part 1 beated

Spoilers up through chapter 78 of the manhwa, which is likely where season 1 of the anime will end.
ie. Spoilers are for content further ahead than where the anime currently is

Hoo boy I can already taste the salt for when season 1 of the anime ends here and there's never a season 2. Very glad they decided to take the route they did with Rachel's character because the cheesy "power of friendship" sort of story they were teasing for a couple chapters just would not have worked I don't think. I suppose on some level you could say it was inevitable because this is obviously more consistent with the way the characters were introduced to begin with, but as a skeptical reader I can't always take consistent writing as a given. Fortunately here the author obviously had a plan and then followed through on the plan, which is both good for this arc itself and promising for the long-term health of the series!

I do hope this story takes this opportunity to do away with the Hunter Exam-style story telling structure and transition to a more open-ended fantasy though. It worked fine for one arc as an introduction but it's just going to feel awkward if the series reverts to the same-old formula for any significant amount of time after this. The most recent art of the series makes it seem like there's a time skip in the works?? If it happens here and skips to a time when the established characters can move more freely it would work very well and would basically immediately address all remaining concerns I have about the story...I guess we'll find out shortly enough though.

Anyway uh, I'd say the start was a bit lackluster but overall this turned into a pretty good opening arc for the series, and the setup for the future makes me very optimistic about the series going forward. All the characters I liked have only gotten better, and even the major characters I wasn't big on I'm now sufficiently intrigued that I want to see where their character arc goes from here.

Best characters (so far): Anaak, Endorsi, Khun, Hansung

I haven't watched any of the anime, but I can easily believe that the action scenes are better in anime format, especially with a Kevin Penkin soundtrack.

Also I want to see the full motion of any of these characters' lips curling up into a smirk instead of just seeing the still image after-the-fact.

I went through 4 episodes of "The 8th Son..." and dropped it.

TBH, as far as isekai goes the isekai part is kind of unneeded. But I thought they did the childhood part and introduction to the character pretty well. However, it anime suffers from these weird continuity errors it seems or at least sequences that dont make sense early on. I enjoyed the main characters socially awkward gimmick early on because it made sense, but that's really all he has going for him. I was also hoping they'd start to establish the side cast more once we got to them but they spend FOREVER with random npcs just going in circles around the main character talking about stuff that's about as interesting as the second season of Log Horizon.

Finished what I guess is the first major arc of part 2 of the Tower of God manhwa. (The Workshop Battle)

Overall a huge step up for the series. I will say I didn't care too much about the finale itself, mainly because a lot of the tension had already been resolved except for some final conflicts with villains who I just ended up not caring about. FUG as an organization is cool, but unfortunately most of the individual FUG characters have been duds, with the exception of Hansung. The whole setup around "Jue Viole Grace" was great though. The mini-arc where Bam meets his new team members might have been my favorite part of the series. I also loved all the drama about Bam trying not to get close to anyone and about his old teammates slowly realizing what was going on.

I wish Endorsi got more screentime but what can you do. Also I can't decide whether I ship Bam/Endorsi or Bam/Yeon but I love them both :(

Rachel is a real piece of shit oml. I hope they end up going the tragic villain route with her character but I could see her character arc going in a number of directions at this point.

I watched 1 episode and a little more of Listeners

I know most of the backlash is from a future episode but man episode 1 is an entire exposition dump and not even in the way that makes anything interesting. We just get vague ideas of what happened and to make matters worse the main girl is plagued by a common overused plot device (amnesia). The main dude is literally an npc looking character. It's been a while since i think I've seen a show that is trying so hard at developing characters but you really end up not knowing anything meaningful about them after the episode. The mech battle, if you can call it a battle, has like no actual physical contact with anything and lasts for all of a minute or something.

That said the starting premise and the effort got me to start to watch episode 2. Where the very first part of it was the bar lady or whoever telling a past shota protagonist what like 3 other characters said in episode 1. That's when I dropped it.
