.hack//sign was horribly paced and usually mainly looked upon fondly due to nostalgia. i rewatched it about twice in the past few years, and while it is still entertaining in a mystery sort of way, it's just boring as hell the vast majority of the time. its concept carries it most of the way, but when you try to compare it to more recent VRMMO/MMO isekai type stuff, it's just so much less entertaining

sao panders to generic interests because reki was just writing a story he wanted to read. he never really intended to be super popular from the beginning, things just kind of exploded after accel world got big and people were suddenly introduced to sao. so it feels very disorganized and amateur all around because that's what it ultimately is. compared to .hack, which was a massive franchise from development

at least .hack isn't as offensively terrible as sao drips to occasionally these days; reki can't stop writing sexual abuse into his stories, and the one time he didn't (alicization), they sprinkled some in for the anime anyways. it's actually utterly ridiculous how horrible sao villains are outside of the very first one. I do like a few arcs from sao way more than anything in .hack (mother's rosario is 10/10 fight me), but .hack in general is a lot more consistent (if predictable and boring because of it)

I rate hack//sign much more highly. I mean, the first thing that sets it apart is that it's the only MMO anime that is like an actual MMO. People troll and grief and afk in town and theres not a whole a lot to do if you actually play daily. I also really loved the brief moments it peels back the mask and shows the real life moments in black and white. They are so short but really powerful IMO. Especially BT when you see the class reunion thingy in the garbage and then she logs back on after saying she quit the game. People use "the world" as an escape in the same way real people do and I've met people that act like a lot of the characters in actual MMOs.

I also thought the identity of the main character was handled really well and the whole show just has this odd vibe to it that I enjoy. It has flaws for sure. Its really slow, the characters sometimes have pretty awkward conversations and the ultimate mystery is just ok but I still think it holds up as really good IF you play actual MMOs just for the character study alone.

I think SAO is fine and yeah mother's rosario was really good. I think reki's main talent is in making believable near future technology that is interesting. Both accel world and SAO have some really interesting technologies that don't feel that far fetched. I just think he doesn't do a great job at actually creating good characters and plots around it. I would be pretty surprised if we don't get something similar to full dive VR eventually and it probably won't look too different from the nerve gear. The integration of biology and technology in accel world seems like a reasonable step after that. It's not quite ghost in the shell, but I find most of reki's ideas about technology to be pretty interesting and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it becomes a case of people inventing that technology because of it's appearance in fiction.

And I maintain that Kill La Kill is the real sequel to FLCL.

But, as I have said before, .hack//SIGN is my favorite 'trapped in the game' anime, though Log Horizon is up there, too.

Broke a year in anime watching time. Sitting at 365.44 days of anime watched. Watched Princess Connect to get over the last little bit I needed to break 365.25. Now I need to find something new to watch. Might watch some Conan in the meantime. Though, I've been thinking of rewatching something.

I started persona 5 royal. Seems like it's not too rough on me illness wise so hopefully I can play a lot of it. Played about 5 hours and I'm enjoying it so far. Decided to just play on normal to ease my hatred of time management. Hopefully I won't feel pressured if the RPG aspects are easy.

Finally started to play Pokken Tournament DX and, let me just say, the VA-work is so bad I wish they had just stuck to text. I'm not sure why they have VA-work at all. They could have had a producer's kid read those lines better.

Also it's one of those wonky fighters where I'm going to have to learn some actual mechanics instead of figuring things out as I go along. I hate those.

I went through the first two tutorials in Pokken (and accidentally clicked through the explanation of how to leave duel mode, but I guess I'll figure that out later) and then tried using Empeleon again... and still got my ass kicked by the CPU. I then tried out Blaziken and won 9/10 or 10/11 matches against the CPU (winning both games out of most matches and then losing one match (1-2) vs the CPU's Scizor)

I keep hitting back to block instead of R, though, since I'm used to that being the default in a lot of fighters. I've kinda had that same issue in any fighter with a separate block button.

Kinda find it funny when old people say that the comedy in Lower Decks is "too fast". I'd like to see them sit through an episode of Nichijou and then tell me that it's "too fast".

Still occasionally playing Pokken. Currently getting thrashed by Braixen. Switched to try out Lucario, still getting beat. It also made me think about what a terrible design Delphox is that they went with Braixen (which is actually a kinda cute design) rather than Fennekin's final form.

And... finally tried out Suicune. Suicune was one of the bigger draws for me and, all things considered, I was a *little* surprised to see it in the roster since he doesn't fit the theme as much. I've long been a Suicune fan and I'm pleasantly surprised to find that he does seem pretty damn powerful... although absurdly slow-moving. In the lore, he's known for having tremendous speed. In Pokken, his movement speed seems like crap. However, he seems to make up for it with some insanely powerful-looking projectiles. Oo

In general, though, the gameplay just seems wonkier and wonkier the more I see how things are done.

Okay so I tried going on an Isekai Binge by adding a bunch to my Crunchy Queue.

And I would have to say, for a more causal anime, Restaurant to an Other World was great.
Im looking at the release date being 2017 and feeling kind of sad there isnt a season two.

Also watching Knight's and Magic, an isekai about a genius programmer who is reincarnated as a young boy in a universe where its basically the middle ages but they have primal mech technology and he comes in and is determined to make the best mech ever. CG is bad but the story pulls me in enough to forgive it.

I love Detective Conan, but the full intro is way too awful and long (specifically the Japanese ones). Is it done as a deliberate filler to pad out the run time on some episodes? >_>

At any rate, lost electricity for a while so watched a few eps I had stored on my phone. As always, I greatly prefer the dub to the sub, both for the VAs -- particularly Richard/Kogou -- as well as being able to pay more attention to the suspect reactions which are always great.

Managing to play through persona 5 royal a few hours a day. I'm in mid June now working my way through the 3rd palace. It's sorta weird and very anime how they cover fairly deep conflicting themes in one moment and then beat you over the head with something super obvious the next. I guess maybe they suspect half the game will be lost on average player so they just made some parts REALLY easy to follow.

Some of the stuff the phantom thieves fail to understand (particularly ryuji and ann) is almost comical but then there will be a conversation with someone else about the true nature of emotional pain and the rights one person has to influence another, but then they give up and assume you are too stupid to follow and dumb it down to something a 3 year old could understand, and then ryuji comes in with a "yeah I still don't get it at all man". It just makes those interactions come off as awkward. Ryuji isn't THAT dumb and you'd have to be downright lobotamized to not understand that a palace is how the target sees the world and thus changing their perspective in real life will effect the palace after morgana explains it like 10 times.

Thats all fairly nitpicky though, I really like the game. Honestly the lifesim/story part is probably more enjoyable than the rpg attached to it.

Watching Lower Decks as I type this, in fact. Pacing is hard to get right, especially in comedy. The first Netflix "season" of MST3K never quite got it right, and even Rick & Morty had a bumpy start on it.

The moments with makima in the newest chapter had this insidious and insipid feel to it even though it looks fluffy and happy on the surface.

Or maybe it felt that way because it was fluffy and happy but we know Makima's true nature.

Things are really snowballing downhill for Denji now.

Being episodic makes it easy to watch an ep or two, but hard to watch a ton in a row. Though, I've found spacing out each ep, even if only by 20-30 mins of doing other things makes it easier to keep watching. Guess I just need a brief reset before starting a new case. Looking forward to exiting the SD era and entering the HD era for it, but that should still be quite a ways off.

You're close to a major bit of plot development. That's right around where they stopped doing the English dub, and just before a major character is introduced. Be sure to check out the movies as well; they're great and they all tend to ramp up the action.

For some reason, I have a much easier time binging the manga than the show. And the dub I can watch a lot of episodes in a row, but the sub I can only watch a few before wanting a break.

You should play The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.

There's DLC for Zesteria? Wait do you have to pay for the Alisha DLC now? It's fun I guess but far from needed. It's a side story after you finish the game.

You've always had to pay for that DLC. There's another DLC pack that unlocks some fights I think

You didn't have to buy it if you pre-ordered. When you pre-ordered Zestiria you got the Alisha DLC and Symphonia for free.

btw I have all of the achivements in Zestiria and created a load of videos for it when I played (every boss but the cameo on Chaos)
