I can feel the hopelessness and frustration, I think we call can. There's no good reason for this to keep happening. I hate that it keeps happening. I hate that nothing is ever done.

So I guess well just make schools be fire-unsafe, generally less convenient, and possibly backfire during an actual school shooting so they can pretend theyre doing something

Most of our schools have reverted to single entry/exit to keep log of everyone that comes on campus.

It actually makes them less safe if someone decides to start shooting.

Move the schools to unmarked buildings so shooters cant find them

That list of Fox News "suggestions" video that's going around is hilarious. It's almost as if modern society has lost the capability for critical thinking. The solution to the problem is to ban guns, and crack down on anyone who thinks that the 2nd amendment is "sacred" or whatever other garbage the Gun Fetish Cult believes.

I dont know about mental health, but there has been a huge amount of learning loss during the pandemic. Lots of kids (probably most) are not in a position to learn as well from home as in-person.

Oh and I know we're getting a lot of focus on the police and the media is eating up the police narrative too...

But it really misses the larger issue. Uvalde is a relatively small town. These small local police departments are never going to be prepared for something like this. They shouldn't have to be.

This is going to result in calls for more police funding and ultimately do nothing.

Also media acting like this small city is going to have big city disaster response. All these things didn't happen because especially as towns get smaller everyone is convinced these things cant happen to them.

The small town already spent 40% of their budget on their police, including a swat team. They implemented "security policies" in February and toured the school.

The fix is simple. Civilians should not be allowed to buy AR-15 assault rifles and AK-47s. There needs to be mandatory background checks. We also have enough homeless veterans to put 3 armed men in every school to protect it.

While assault rifles make it easier, the sad fact is this exact scenario could have been played out with a pistol and a few spare clips. Anything short of a total gun ban is beyond stupid

As much as I approve some obvious gun control laws, even an immediate passage is going to still have to reckon with the fact that there are more guns than people in the US.

That's completely insane and probably is going to mean the country is more likely to end than to fix the issue

From what I can see of the conservative camp, they're coming out of this with a pro-guns but anti-police mindset. We'll see how long it lasts but even Fox was blasting the police officers this time.

Curious if anyone with far right family members has talked to them about this. Do they care? Are they feeling the same anger and desire to do something? Universal background checks poll at 90 percent. Two thirds of people are for assault weapon bans and I think it was even a slight majority of Republicans (but correct me if I'm wrong). The complete and utter inaction just makes me question our entire system. I don't understand how we can allow our so-called leaders to have zero accountability whatsoever to what the public demands. I mean, we've known this for over a decade but on an issue like this with little children being murdered...it's just so upfront, so blatant, so disgusting.

I hope there's a massive protest outside that NRA conference tomorrow and I hope the media keeps covering this issue, instead of moving on like they always do.

38 states is a high enough bar that people don't even start talking about it. But I think that's got to be step one. Let's talk about a constitutional amendment. There is no other way to change things here.

I might be ignorant of something you're specifically referencing, but I think the beef a lot of people have with "white guilt culture" is the fact that people are telling kids born in the last decade that they are racist colonizers because of what people did 200 years ago. You have to go down some pretty extreme 4chan-esque rabbit holes to find anyone actually supporting slavery or trying to paint it in that light

Non-existant gun laws are the main issue at play here, but let's not sleep on the fact that these podunk small town cops completely shit the bed until unrelated LEA came in outside of their jurisdiction to stop the killer.

My husband's side of the family is the only one with far right wingers, and we're not particularly close. But my husband told me what some of them have said:

One said "Poor guns. Everyone is blaming them. It's not the guns fault."

Another said that the shooter was a liberal, and that liberals will make it out to look like they're a Republican, and once it comes out that they're a liberal that everyone will stop trying to take away a 'god given right'

Another focused on mental health, and felt no laws could have stopped this.

The details police gave today are the worst yet.

The authorities now say that local officers first entered the school at 11:35, two minutes after the gunman, and that there were 19 officers in the hallway by 12:03 p.m., but that they did not breach the door and kill the gunman until 12:50, even as they continued to hear him firing.

No jury in the state would convict if a parent of one of these kids took things into their own hands at this point. The police story has been contradicted so many times now that I'm fully expecting a reveal that the cops killed at least one of the kids.

So now when some crackhead breaks into your shed and gets caught, they are back in the streets within hours as long as they pinky swear to show up for their court date. It's made it impossible for police to keep shitheads off the street.

Getting rid of life without parole closes the loop and basically makes it so that none of our laws have any real consequences. I don't know what the Liberals are thinking, or how they can be confronted with the hard facts and statistics yet still continue down this path, but here we are. It's crazy how your choices on where to live is either a shithole where meth addicted criminals can act freely without fear of repercussion, or theocratic hellhole where everyone has assault rifles and schools are regularly shot at.

It's crazy how one "side" of politics spends all of their energy making criminals/drug addicts/homeless people feel better at the expense of everyone else, while the other "side" is focussed on lining the pockets of the rich at the expense of everyone else.
