In all likelyhood he just saw democratic leadership back an anti-choice A-Rated NRA supporter in texas and decided he hates everything mainstream again.

Theres a difference between wanting Democrats to lose so things get worse in order to force radical change, and believing with every fiber in my being that Democrats are going to lose, things are going to get worse, and that Joe Biden and the Democratic apparatchik are incapable of stopping it.

Forgive me for ranting but I forgot there are people that piss me off with their lack of knowledge of the country and their view on politics.

Got a static member in XIV, really excessively rich dude since birth that lives in Texas. We were having a very broad politics talk, nothing deep, just about our political regions. Some talk about California, how we aren't really as deep blue as people see us. Some talk about how some of us live in Red/Blue/Purple areas. Then there is spoiled mr texas. He gets on a dumb rant about how the most awful thing is how we see it as red/blue. Which is fine, sure. But then he starts going on about how the two party system was never the intended outcome of our government and that it wasn't like that on this countries inception.

And now, I'm not a history buff, I have a very loose grasp of US history, generally just what I need and google will cover the rest. But I know that is fucking bullshit. We've pretty much been under a two party system since our inception, our founders pretty much worked with a 2 party system in mind, and we've never for a sizable period really ever been more than a 2 party system.

So I call him out on his bullshit. Which he then backtracks to "well the difference is they viewed politics as being civil servants" so it was different. Which of course, is also pretty much bullshit. His statement further was that they didn't take salaries(Actually someone else said that and he agreed). Which, immediately, I know is not entirely true. For one, I knew the Presidential salary started at something like $25,000(I was actually right and surprised myself). That was a pretty sizable amount of money in 1789 or whatever. But again, super spoiled rich guy here, so I have no idea how his concept of money translates. There was some truth in government salaries not being great, but I don't believe our ruling class here has ever been comprised of those one would consider poor.

He would move on to saying that the idea of "Career politicians" is something suddenly new, that lobbying didn't exist in the early days, and that politicians back then all lead meager lives and had their primary career outside of politics(This one is partially true!).

Its such a borked idealized view of how our country formed and he was so angry trying to defend it when most of what he said was just outright fantasy. It is just so annoying that people in the world, even people I know are generally not fucking stupid, can afford to be that naive. And then get angry when you tell them, with evidence, that they are wrong.

Also going to stress I don't even hate the dude. Enjoy hanging out with him and stuff. But holy shit his views on politics and the country are insufferably skewed from reality.

Also this is partially a lie sometimes, like this conversation, the "spoiled rich dude" comes out of him and I absolutely hate and want to strangle him. But generally that isn't the overall feeling.

I just want to point out that, at least here in Texas, a large percentage of politicians (At least the state legislative branch) do have their primary career outside of politics. Which is a function of the fact that the state legislature pays rather poorly.

What it actually means is that only the people that are actually already rich can afford to run for those offices though. I wouldn't call it a good thing per se.

The most charitable view you can grant here is that he was fed the bullshit mythology of US history that claims this. Hell, I think school when I grew up did as well. It basically points to the Federalist Papers where Hamilton and Madison talk about the dangers of domestic political factions and Washington (the only President to not belong to a party) warned against them in his farewell address.

But that completely ignores that the way they set up the government essentially demanded two, and only two, political parties and that the founders weren't united on this - hell, Jefferson was the one who was leading the opposition party at the founding!

And of course, the fact that Washington being the only one to not belong to a party - dude was basically appointed President - means everyone else was including the other Founders who went on to be President after him... including the aforementioned Madison.

Basically, I could believe that he was taught the whole "Founders didn't want political parties" bit because I'm pretty sure I was too despite being in a completely different part of the country. So much of this country's history has been distorted and mythologized and it's taught that way and unless you're lucky enough to have a teacher/curriculum/class that corrects that, then the only way you might be disabused of it is to research on your own initiative. And now with the whole bullshit CRT shit, Republicans are basically declaring any true telling of history that conflicts with the myth to be false, dangerous, and illegal making it really down to an individual to independently question and research what they're taught in school.

From what I understand this was definitely more common in the early days of the country. But never was our government particularly comprised of people that had a sole motivation to represent -people-. They always had a bias to the wealthy. Particularly since those were really the only people allowed to vote.

Yeah, it's weird.

Worth noting this wasn't SCOTUS weighing in on the merits of the law but just the injunction and stay. Lower court initially blocked the law with an injunction before the Fifth Circuit stayed that injunction and put the law in effect (you may recall the case with a judge telling the lawyer that his clients -- Facebook, Google, and YouTube among others -- "aren't websites. They're internet providers.") SCOTUS here overturned the stay so now the injunction is back.

Kagan dissented without comment. Alito wrote a dissent, joined by Thomas and Gorsuch, where he basically trots out the Texas abortion bounty law lines of, "Hmm, well this is a novel law. Guess that means we can't do shit about it! Oh, also I'm not commenting on the merits here but actually I totally am on Texas's side teehee."

The twitter thread you posted notes that Kagan doesn't deny these kind of appeals on principle and has lifted stays in other cases though so idk what to make of it. Her not joining Alito's batshit dissent makes me think this is some kind of (probably inconsistent?) procedural principle on her end but who knows.

I actually read the text of the bill having heard the same thing and I can't find it myself. There is a clause in there saying that social media companies can't discriminate based on geographical location so maybe that's it? Or it interfaces with other Texas law in a way that leads to that conclusion without it being immediately obvious (to me.)

In much less important, but amusing and very confusing news, Rittenhouse's newest... grift? is to lie about going to college. In the winter, he claimed he was enrolled to attend in-person at Arizona State, leading ASU to straight up put out a statement saying he hadn't even applied. Now, he made a show of doing a college football style "reveal" that he's going to Texas A&M on the Charlie Kirk Show, prompting Texas A&M to say no, he has never been admitted.

I'm confused what he's gaining from this particular brand of lying.

After Trump my theory on scandals is that their fallout is not a function of how bad the behavior was in absolute terms, but only how bad it is relative to expectations. If someone continuously amps up the badness, they can, as Trump said, shoot someone in 5th Avenue and not lose a single vote.

" watched the video of the incident. The guy wasn't being detained. Were they supposed to run and tackle him?

This is one of those situations where hindsight is truly 20/20. If they had chased after him, he would probably just have accelerated his movement into the water. I think they were trying to de-escalate the situation and (a) didn't realize how serious he was about trying to swim across the whole lake and (b) didn't realize just how dangerous the water was (their warnings were all about how he wasn't "allowed" to swim there and not that it's not safe).

I think that a lot of people here have "ACAB" so ingrained in their belief system that they automatically assume the actions of every cop are always incorrect. If the cops had physically restrained this guy to prevent him from getting into the water, we'd have a body cam footage of cops assaulting a man who was exercising his right to leave a situation where he was, legitimately, free to go. We'd have people in this thread saying "they didn't know he was actually going to get in the water" and "they were just looking for an excuse to tackle somebody."

ACAB isn't supposed to mean "literally every cop is a psychopath." It's supposed to be an evolution of "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch" and I've always thought of it as an indictment of the police unions and systemic forces that conspire to prevent so-called "bad apples" from actually being dealt with and removed. ACAB not because each individual cop is a bad person, but because the system actively doesn't want to remove bad cops.

You don't have to trash the actions of every cop to stay consistent with your belief system that "all cops are bad.""
----------------------
This is the first time a liberal has ever explained in a way I can grasp and take legitimately that ACAB is not supposed to mean some literally lunatic mindset regarding police.
