Define "disaster". Considering Gaza's small size, Israel should be capable of just doing a complete genocide if they feel like it. Obviously that would be awful, but does it qualify as a disaster?

gaza is basically an open air prison. the violence is abhorrent but decades of truly wretched policy on the israeli government's behalf have left these people with practically nothing. israel's government is failing their people because they can't stop themselves from treating human beings like wild animals

Scalise wins the internal GOP conference secret ballot vote for the Speaker nom. Per Issa it was 113-99. (That's missing 9 members, don't know how many are splinter votes versus just not there)

Jordan is reportedly backing Scalise now but I've also seen reporters say they've found 5+ reps saying they won't vote Scalise on the floor which means he can't win a full floor vote so they cancelled the scheduled vote for today.

Wonder how long this speaker nonsense will go on. I suppose theyve got another, what, 38 days before a shutdown?

When you consider that Israel has a population of just 10 million, really this is 9/11 times ten for them adjusting for percentage of the populace. And true to 9/11 looks like it will be followed by a response that is both disproportionately brutal yet at the same time ineffectual!

To put it into perspective, the total death toll for the last 15 years was about 6700 people (both Israelis and Palestinians). The death toll since the weekend has been 2700+. That number will continue to rise, and will likely pass the prior number. Obviously this is on a different level to what has come before and thats true for both Israel and Palestine.
