Really the only thing I can say after living in Maryland is that at least I'm not surrounded by Trumpers (or they don't make it obvious) and while I'm not gay I also really appreciate the LGBTQ and so on support in the communities here.

Bad vibes text below marked in spoilers

For every other aspect of life here, it's clearly "me me me" whether it's on the road, standing in the middle of aisles completely oblivious in crowded grocery stores, flipping out on people in the service industry or maintenance people to the point where I have been thanked multiple times just for not flipping out over people taking the necessary time to do their jobs, etc.

Yeah unfortunately the student section for Bryant Denny is pretty small, where 40k students have to enter a ticket lottery to attend 4 of the 8 home games. When I was there (2006-2009 seasons) it was 27k students and you were guaranteed to get all 8 home games for $50 total

The rest of the 100k seats are for anybody rich enough to get tickets for a Bama home game so yeah that reaction makes sense

Actually it wasn't guaranteed it was first come first served iirc and if you waited more than a week after tickets became available rip you

Bama struggled with USF last season (17-3) with Saban on the sidelines and Milroe getting benched. It wasn't even that long ago. That season ended up with them beating almighty UGA yet again in the SEC championship game and falling into the playoffs

The doomposting over Bama games before the clock hits 0:00 makes me wonder if people actually watch Bama games in full or just check in when they're not blowing out easy on paper opponents tbh. And as I type this, depth and conditioning come into play on these long TD runs at the very end
lul

I still think Bama slips up once but they should be golden for the playoffs

Not anymore but I do watch my spending and only touch my savings account for a major emergency. Otherwise it's a loose budget with my checking account but I avoid dipping below $2k for that and dump whatever is leftover each month into one of my savings accounts.

I used to buy the cheapest shit (food, clothing, entertainment) to get by but that gets kinda old when you can afford to have slightly nicer things. You can't use your money when you're six feet under, and I'm banking on my TSP (government 401k) and pension existing by the time I'm too old to function. Of course that all goes out the window if I end up with health problems but that applies to pretty much anyone who isn't a multi-millionaire. Once I pay my car off in another 3 years that's a lot more money each month going into savings/TSP.

I'd be in a house instead of a condo, most likely a multi-generation home where my parents could live in an attached home or one that's also on the property. I would want to keep my current job since I actually like it a lot when I'm not dealing with bureaucracy/paperwork. I'm not the type to constantly travel, but I would travel a little bit more and take people with me. Wouldn't upgrade my car since it's already my dream car. Everything else would straight to investments/savings.

Edit: Oh yeah I'd anonymously give like a million to the local makerspace that does STEM outreach stuff for the community.

After the stress of neet life a few years back, I first have 1 year's worth of necessary expenses sitting in a regular savings account for a bank with a ton of brick and mortar locations. Just for peace of mind

After that I put in some in a savings account at my credit union since they were already financing my vehicle so I figured why not. Now I'm currently putting anything I save into an actual HYSA (5% right now iirc) and letting everything else sit. For investment, I just use my TSP for now.

Idaho sounds horrendous

For context, I have either lived in or have family in all of the Deep South states, with most of my family from Bumfucksville, Mississippi (57% white). Of course the history sucks ass, but at least there's a large black population down there who all now hold various degrees of government power. It sounds like you're shit out of luck if any shenanigans happen to you as a minority in Idaho (86% white) though in the middle of nowhere

tbh I'm surprised my Camaro is still running completely fine after having it since 2013 and driving it in Indiana winters for 3 years before moving to where I am now. The only lingering problem now is a leak somewhere that makes the right rear floor wet when it rains a lot

I went Lexus PHEV SUV after that to not push my luck tho. 6 years from now something in the Lexus app is supposedly gonna stop working but I barely use it anyway. Remote start is there (only use it when its cold outside) but other than that I use it to check on the car's location because I'm paranoid when I'm away from it for a long time.

400k a year what does she do?
Machine learning manager and senior engineer at some company I forgot the name of. Similar job responsibilities to one of my labmates in grad school who is a machine learning project lead at Nvidia making around the same amount of money.

She was trying to recruit one of the depressed friends in our friend group and told him he could start at 200k but along with his depression he's a weirdo about power dynamics. Both of them are Indian so they have that weird thing going on like an unspoken competition. Also it was kinda odd how often caste stuff came up in grad school with me knowing a couple dozen Indian students but I never said anything about it and just watched.

I'm not the competitive type when it comes to money and only care about it up to the point where I can save monthly while still contributing to retirement, buy bs here and there, and also not have to sell a kidney if an emergency pops up. Assuming my performance review for the past year isn't ass and with the annual cost of living adjustment, I should crack 150k in January as a fed but if not I don't really care too much. I also only started making decent money when I turned 31 so while it may sound like a lot, I'm still playing catch up to people who had careers in their early 20s

All Nintendo really has to do is make the hardware robust enough where a game like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 isn't a slideshow during some parts of combat. That and backwards compatibility, and I guess OLED for people who care about that but I leave mine docked. Not much of a hurdle but you never know with Nintendo

Well I replaced the GPU, CPU, and RAM last year for a build I made in 2020 so don't know if I can say 4 years. Originally spent ~$2400, the new parts (including a 4090) together were about another 2k, and then I bought the remaining parts to take those old components and make into a living room PC for about another $600

So 2 PCs for ~$5k over the last 4 years. Main PC is a 4090, 5800X3D, 64 GB of RAM and 8 TB total of disk space. Living room PC is a 2070 Super, 3900X, 32 GB of RAM with 3 TB of disk space

If it helps, in my grad school friend group I make the least amount of money. One friend used to make at least 180k and the other friend made more than that for like the last 10 years, and both of them are miserable because of life stuff and also not finding satisfaction in their jobs. Another makes 400k and while she's not depressed she also has a ton of complaints about her job.

So I won't say that income isn't that important because honestly I don't know how I would survive on 44k and live in a place that didn't constantly depress me, but income isn't everything
