Can't get over how the game literally went backwards instead of forward with the plot from Shenmue II. Also literal zero character development for Ryo and Shenhua. If anything Ryo feels like a complete loser by the end of the game. Getting absolutely owned by forget Lan Di but those two thugs as well as all the masters he trains under.

The whole 20-30 hour game is basically a wild goose chase in Bailu village and then another city where only at the end you get to Shenhua's father with not a very satisfying payoff in the end anyways.

Also how the fuck did they manage to make the gameplay worse in almost every way than Shenmue II and even the first game? Combat becomes literally an R2 button masher (not even exaggerating) and also the developers completely forgot to add quick travel in the noticeably bigger 2nd area.

I don't think Suzuki is gonna get lucky with another crowdfunded project after this debacle. So imagining a future Shenmue IV is looking like a long stretch at this point. So the story goes on.... with no conclusion is what we Shenmue fans ultimately get. Nice.

goes on

Would have been fine if the story covered something at least but this was literally Filler: the game.

Ryo basically accomplished nothing except getting his ass kicked by Lan Di. Again. Hell he lost the Phoenix Mirror so instead of the plot advancing, it is set back even more.

Yes, Yu Suzuki envisioned a 5-6 part series back in the day so maybe this explains all the fillers and fetch quests-like segments.
But after all the time and funding it took for the 3rd game to finally get made, it is a giant middle finger to all the fans who have waited 18 years to get a conclusion to the series or at least any meaningful advancement of the plot. Instead now we have to hope the game sells well enough (which it isn't doing so) to get the 4th game.

And as for the gameplay. Hoo boy. Whoever thought it was a good idea to implement a horrible stamina system with constantly needing to eat and grind for money (jesus christ those two pay walls in both the areas to learn a new move) to pad out the game length unnecessarily should have been fired on the spot.

It may not be, but unless he's going to give these games an actual shot, why should we take anything he says on the subject seriously? After reading how he's spoken in the topic, does anyone believe he went in to any of the indie games he says he's played with an actual open mind, ready to have his opinion changed? I sure don't.

My main issue here is how he's basically saying "all your indie games suck and I'm right no matter what" and then being all "heaven forbid I express my OPINION to you people!" when people are obviously going to push back on such an offputting stance. Like he's not wrong in that indie games have a lower ceiling, it's natural that a small company doesn't have the resources like a company like nintendo. But to act like these games just don't exist and then get butthurt when someone uses them as an example of good games this year, no thanks.

Here is a full list of Indie games I have beaten.

Beaten (from best to worst)
Tier 1: Good-Great games I'd recommend to everyone and see myself replaying in the future
01. Cuphead (Top 200 game, for reference I have beaten a little over 1100 games in my 20 years of lets say hardcore gaming)
02. Shovel Knight
03. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (dunno whether this qualifies or not. Feel free to remove it if it doesn't or anything else on the list for that matter)
04. Braid

Tier 2: Good games with few flaws but not good enough to warrant future replays
05. Ori and the Blind Forest
06. Plants vs. Zombies
07. Celeste
08. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
09. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
10. Rocket League
11. Undertale
12. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
13. VVVVVV
14. Bastion
15. A Hat in Time

Tier 3: Average-OK games
16. Return of the Obra Dinn
17. Night in the Woods
18. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero
19. Firewatch
20. Her Story

Tier 4: The overrated and nothing special tier
21. Hollow Knight (could have been great but some unacceptable flaws for a game of its kind)
22. INSIDE
23. Outlast 2
24. Outlast
25. Super Meat Boy
26. LIMBO
27. Cave Story (the king of overrated indie games with the most obnoxious true final boss and dungeon ever)

Tier 5: The gaming is an art tier
28. Journey
29. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
30. Gone Home
31. Flower
32. What Remains of Edith Finch

Now a list of indie games that I gave shot but realized it just wasn't for me
- Stardew Valley (think Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Harvest Moon: Back to Nature was enough for a lifetime as far as games of similar nature are concerned but I see why this game is beloved by people who enjoy the genre)
- Divinity: Original Sin II (maybe I can give it a chance again in the future. I loved Planescape and Baldur's Gate II but maybe just wasn't in the right mindset for this game)
- Guacamelee
- Hotline Miami
- Dead Cells
- Salt & Sanctuary
- No Man's Sky
- FTL: Faster than Light
- Pyre
- The Sexy Brutale
- The Witness
- Crypt of the Necrodancer
- Baba is You
- 2 Shantae games I forgot the titles of

There is probably more I'm forgetting about right now.

But yeah you tell me whether I'm judging them without even giving them a proper shot or not. Or do I need to play like a hundred more of them before I'm qualified enough to talk about Indie games?

Or should I just not be allowed to criticize indie games around here since it is the holy grail of board 8 because I'll stop. No sarcasm intended. I didn't make this topic to talk about my opinion on indie games anyway.

And if you want me to define why those games are objectively better than all your indie games

The games I have mentioned have a metascore and user ratings of:

Persona 5 - Meta: 93 User: 4.59/5
BotW - Meta: 97 User: 4.58/5
Super Maroo Odyssey - Meta: 97 User: 4.52/5
Bloodborne - Meta: 92 User: 4.45/5

Outer Wilds: Meta: 87 User: 3.32

So no. But nice try.

Indie games I've played during this year through word of mouth.

- Celeste - fun addictive gameplay and challenging but nothing special or ground breaking.
- INSIDE - Alright game. A step up from LIMBO but still waaaay too simple and short to be considered anything great like its overrated predecessor.
- Hollow Knight - Fuck the map and traversal in this game seriously. I beat it about a month ago and boy am I glad I'm done with it. The boss battles were the best part of the game but my god was the map a fucking mess. Unacceptable for a metroidvania to have terrible map and travel mechanics.
- Ori and the Blind Forest - Really good metroidvania and fun to play. It kinda feels repetitive towards the end but I liked my time with it. Way way better than Hollow Knight.
- Rocket League - Fun to play but I much rather prefer playing Pro Evolution Soccer.
- Return of the Obra Dinn - Liked my time with it but holy hell is it overrated as hell in this board.
- Baba is You - Alright game to play but didn't really grab me.

You.

Sorry dude. Most Indie games are fucking overrated. There is a reason why half the indie fanbase are pretentious "gaming is an art" people who praise walking simulator garbages like Journey and What Remains of Edith Finch as the greatest games ever created.

I don't say this with ignorance. I've played most of the highly reviewed Indie games. Some are good even great, some are average and bad. And of course the AAA market has its fair share of average, terrible and uninspired games.

What is the difference though is that there is a glass ceiling for Indie games. None have been truly amazing or reached the heights of the best AAA games out there because they are much more limited in budget and has a much smaller developmental team.

Kindly name 1 indie game that remotely comes close to the quality and depth of Persona 5, Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey or Bloodborne from this generation of games.

I will wait. And whatever answer you come up with will be objectively false.

Indie games normally don't do it for me. The most highly acclaimed ones are the ones I usually I play and while they are mostly good, none can really compare in quality to the best AAA games out there. So yeah, unless something really gets good reviews and recognition, I'm most likely gonna remain oblivious to the fact that it even exists.

My motto is, if it is good, I'll hear about it without having to search for it.

Which is the weakest year for video games this decade?

This year is making a very strong case for weakest year in gaming since 2014. Only Sekiro has been an all-time phenomenal experience for me, with Resident Evil 2, in 2nd place, being an amazing one too.

Then there is a pretty huge rift between these two and the rest of the games that came out this year.

KH3, DMC5 were good to great games but nothing truly extraordinary. They were just standard-fare high quality games in their series but doesn't really do anything ground breaking or push the series to new heights.

FE3H was the only pleasant surprise this year. I expected it to be just an ok Fire Emblem game but it turned out to be my favorite one in the series. Still wouldn't put it in the same league as Sekiro and RE2 though.

Now the rest of the games that came out this year. Yikes. So so many promising titles an
