I really have a hard time seeing Snake having hold up well enough tonot be blown to pieces by Link.

He's back in Smash yeah, but that surely isn't going to give him a big enough boost to recover what he probably has fallen from MGS being in a bad state as well as boost him above what Link was already ahead of him. Not to mention that was at a lowpoint for Zelda and Nintendo, with Skyward Sword as the most recent game and the Wii U as the active console, Link has reason to be stronger. And about Smash 5, is that really gonna boost him much? Do Smash fans that are going to support him now, but didn't already exist? He was in Brawl and it helped him a lot, so unless you'd think he wouldn't been hurt by not being in Smash 4 (we didn't know that yet last character battle), what could he rise from? Pretty much everyone on this site was around for Brawl. Yeah, I just can't see it happening at all.

I wouldn't be confident about taking Snake against Mario and Samus either.

Haha, its sort of fun running these brackets totally blind. The last contest feels like a mild fever dream, so I cant even recall the real juice from that year! we saw Crono defy this for five years before it finally caught up to him (and even then he didn't get weak enough to lose to something like Pikachu until 2013)

we saw Sephiroth defy it for even longer

like sure it might eventually catch up to you but 2013 Snake was seriously probably the strongest version of him ever and Brawl and MGS4 were five years old at that point

heck we saw Chrono Trigger come literally OUT OF NOWHERE to become perhaps the strongest game on this site in 2015

like you don't need new stuff to be strong here

2013 Snake seemed so strong because Cloud and Link took a nosedive while Snake remained constant. Keep in mind that was before the all the fiascoes surrounding Konami.

That being said, I do agree overall that not receiving new games means loss of strength. Samus still did well last contest even though people thought her series was dead. Now it isn't anymore!

God I just realized that the previous character battle started soon after the announcement of Smash 4, which had Mega Man announced, and this one is starting soon after the announcement of Smash Ultimate, which features the return of Snake. Not only do we have the coincidence of both contests starting soon after announcements of Smash games, in both cases one of the newcomers (sort of) announced is a Noble Niner whose series is being ignored by its parent company.

he outperformed 2010 Link's expectations on characters in his match in both round 1 and round 2

unless you just want to argue that everyone except for Snake dropped

Stefanie Joosten (Quiet's actress) is actually a gamer girl (she even has a Twitch channel she streams on semi-regularly, last I checked). I wonder if someone could get a Quiet rally going through her. I feel like she'd do it.

They held auditions where different actresses were given proof gear/guns and told to perform actions like they were in the military, and she was the only one who looked semi-realistic because she'd played enough games (MGS included) to just emulate what she'd seen.

I personally don't play many video games anymore, just watch let's plays, highlights, trailers of the game. Or I watch other people play video games. Nothing is "serious business" anymore. That bonus match was Snake's best chance ever to beat Link imo. All the support he had coming into that match from the day before and while it was a good performance, it was always Link's match. I think it's incredible optimistic to think that would be any different today. Even if Snake actually caught some rally, it's insane to not think Zelda fans would counter it. "Blown to pieces" is an exaggeration of course, and I don't get me wrong, I'd love it see it happen, but I absolutely can't see Link being anywhere near close to losing.

This is a good point for sure, but most evidence we have do point towards this being the general rule however, even if it did take a while for it to happen with Crono, Sephiroth and whoever else. Chrono Trigger is a rare exception, which seems to mostly be it lucking on which userbase is still here tbh.

And I do see Mario and Samus being in a better light in everyones mind now, while I don't think Snake has much reason to be better than back then (already explained why I don't think Smash 5 helps him much), while maybe MSG current situation and MSGV would put him in a slightly less noble spot than he was in back in 2013.

Like there's a vocal minority here that really didn't like it, but overall that game was received VERY WELL. It still has a very active community. (well maybe not VERY active, but still)

The circumstances around Konami/Kojima shouldn't affect Snake.
